andThe Honorable Board of SupervisorsCounty of Placer
Gentlemen:
In accordance with Section 65.5 of the AgriculturalCode, I am Submitting the 1959 crop report for Placer County.
This report of the gross agricultural values is de-rived from different basic F.O.B. sales points than have beenused in past years, and prices shown for some agriculturalcrops will vary considerable froa past records. For example, this year our figures for fruit crops are based on the averageannual price for packed fruit F.O.B. the packing house; inpreceding years, our figures were on the average annual pricethe grower received for harvested, but ungraded and unpackedfruit F.O.B. his ranch.
Also, sizeable incomes to the county which wereshown in previous years have been deleted, namely forestryproduction and government A.C.S. payments to farmers.
This change in method of estimating values wasbrought about by the recommendations that all counties usea uniform reporting system which should in future years showa truer picture in comparing cue county’s agricultural incomeagainst another, and also the state income as a whole.
I wish to extend my sincere appreciation to themany farmers, packing house managers and other individualswhose cooperation makes this report possible.
Respectfully submitted,
W. H. WILSONAgricultural Commissioner

Gentlemen:
In accordance with the provisions of Section 65.5 of theAgricultural Code, I am submitting the annual crop reportfor Placer County, showing the acreage, production, andgross values received during 1960. "
Although our county’s total agricultural income for theyear appears to be one of the best, the values shown byno means reflect the net returns to the farmer as hlsmaintenance and operating costs such as labor, chemicalmaterials, brokerage, taxes, etc., have not been deducted.
Growing conditions for some crops were not good, and inaddition, our pear growers faced a very dark future dueto the new disease called Pear Decline. An orchard toorchard survey of the county for this disease showed that1,500 acres were out of production and will be eitherpulled out or abandoned. An estimated additional 850acres will be takeu out of production by 1962 unless thecause of the disease, and a remedy is found.
Individual reports are strictly confidential with thisoffice and only the county totals are shown. I want toexpress my appreciation to the many growers, packinghouse managers, and others for their cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
W. H. WILSONAgriculturaI Commissioner

Mr. Charles Paul, DirectorState Department of Agriculture
andThe Honorable Board of SupervisorsCounty of Placer
Gentlemen:
I am submitting the Placer County Agricultural Crop Reportfor the year 1961 in accordance with Section 65.5 of the
Agricultural Code.
The gross farm returns were ~20,245,500.00; $1,097,845.00less than in 1950. Low rainfall, late spring frosts, h~lldamage, and an early hot summer all combined to lower thequality and cuautity of crop yields.
A countywide survey and orchard registration In cooperationwith the California Crop Reporting Service showed some verysignificant chguges from five years ago. Our orchards andvineyards then totaled 16,945 acres. Today we have only12,066 acres. A decrease brought about by the biKher costof production and the ,changing times" generally throuKhoutCalifornia.
I want to sincerely thank the California Crop ReportingService, and our many farmers and packing house managerswhose cooperation made this report possible.
Respectfully submitted,
W. H. WILSONAgricultural Commissioner

Gentlemen:
This crop report, showing the ~creage, production, andgross receipts of the agricultural commodities grown in PlacerCounty is the twenty fourth annual report submitted by thisoffice in compliance with Section 65.5 of the AgriculturalCode. The figures are compiled through the cooperation offarmers, packing houses, livestock men and other agencieswhose interest and help are sincerely appreciated.
Our annual gross incomes through these years shows agradual increase through 1960. Each of the oast three yearsa decrease is noted and can be charged to the cost-pricesqueeze which is eliminating many of our small ranches, alongwith pear decline. In addition, this last year was one of themost unfavorable ever for fruit growers because of rains duringthe pollinating seasons, followed by several damaging hailstorms that lowered the quality and quantity far below average.
However, cost of production studies of these fruits beingmade by our Agricultural Extension Service are bringing aboutrecommendations for a transition from old orchards to newvarieties of fruits and other types of farming more suitable toour soil and climatical conditions. This is adding great en-couragement for our agricultural industry to remain as a main-stay to our economy.
Respectfully submitted,
W. H. WILSONAgricultural Commissioner

Gentlemen:
In compliance with Section 65.5 of the AgriculturalCode, I am submitting the 1964 annual crop report ofPlacer County showing the estimated acreage, crop pro-ductiou, and gross returns of our growers.
The total gross income was $18,195,450. Less by$170,590 than in 1963, but encouraging to our peargrowers whose production increased from 3,510 tons lu1963 to 10,880 tons in 1964; due primarily to goodgrowing conditions for pears as well as all of ourfruits. Our income from plums, livestock and poultryproduction was lowered because of poorer market prices, faced by the rising costs of production.
I wish to express my thanks to the many farmersand agencies whose cooperation with my staff makes thisreport possible.
Respectfully submitted,
W. H. WILSONAgricultural Commissioner

Gentlemen:
I am submitting the 1965 annual crop report forPlacer County i~ compliance with Section 65.5 of theAgricultural Code.
The total returns were $18,114,940. They repre-sent gross receipts which reflect greatly to theeconomy of the county, but should not be construedas a highly profitable year for the farmers as costsof production continued upward.
The brighter side was that our livestock, apiary, and field crops showed substantial increases. Thefuture for these crops appears better than for ourfruit industry.
I wish to express my thanks to the many farmersand agencies whose cooperation with my staff makesthis report possible.
Respectfully submitted,
lk. /i/.W. H. WILSONAgricultural Commissioner

Gentlemen:
In compliance with Section 2279 of the California AgriculturalCode, I hereby submit the 1967 Agricultural Crop Report forPlacer County.
Gross agricultural inco~ in 1967 was $20,828,500, a decreaseof $1,466,980 from our 1966 figure of $22,295,480. Adverseweather conditions in the spring played an important part inthis decline. Rain and cold weather during the plum and pearblooming periods contributed to poor fruit sets i, both crops.
Plum returns were down $887,000 and pear returns were down$537,000 from 1966.
It must be kept in mind that these figures show gross returnsto the economy of the county and do not reflect net returns tothe growers.
The cooperation of those growers, packinghouse managers, andothers who assisted my staff in preparation of this report isgreatly appreciated.
Respectfully submitted,

Gentl emen :
As required by Section 2279 of the California Agricultural Code,
I hereby submit to you the 1968 Agricultural Crop Report forPlacer County.
The agricultural income in 1968 was $22,585,560, an increase of$1,757,060 over 1967. The 1968 figure establishes a record high
agricultural income for Placer County, exceeding our previoushigh in 1966 by $290,080. These figures show gross returns tothe economy of the county, but do not necessarily reflect thenet returns to the growers.
The fruit industry despite frost damage to some orchards andvineyards, and the field crop industry largely accounted for theincrease over our 1967 figure.
The cooperation of those growecs, packinghouse managers and
others who assisted my staff in compiling this report is greatlyappreciated.
Sincerely,

Gentlemen:
I am submitting the 1969 Placer Couuty ~gricultural CropReport as required by Section 2279 of the CaliforulaAgricultural Code.
The gross agricultural income in 1969 was $23,509~650exceeding the previous record county income iu 1968 of$22,585,560 by $918,090. These figures represent grossreturns to the economy of the county, but do not necessa-rily reflect the net returns to the producer.
The commodities primarily responsible for the increasein the county’s agricultural income over the 1968 figurewere the plum industry, the cattle industry, aud theturkey iudustry. The plum iudustry showed the largestiucrease due to the contiuued good prices and au increasein productiou in spite of hail damage in portions of theplum growing district. Some of the best cattle pricesreceived in years accounted for the increase in cattlevalues. Greater production and higher prices accountedfor the raise in turkey iucome.
The assistance of those growers, packinghouse managers, and others who assisted my staff in compiling this reportis greatly appreciated.
Siucerely,
g~ricuitural Commissioner

Alex Ferreira Ray Thompson
Gentlemen:
The Annual Placer County Crop Report is being submitted inaccordance with Section 2279 of the California Agricultural Code.
The agricultural income in 1970 was $23,458,120, down $51,530 fromthe 1969 income of $23,509,650. It must be pointed out that thesefigures represent the gross returns to the economy of the countyand do not reflect net returns to the gro~ers. The grower iscontinually faced by a cost price squeeze with higher productioncosts and little, if any, increase in value for his farm product.
Weather played an important part in production during the past year.~early all fruit crops were affected to some extez~t by late frosts, with grapes being particularly hard hit. Excessive winter moistureand a dry spring caused a drop in cereal grain production from thatof normal years.
A large increase in the turkey industry somewhat offset declines inother areas of production. The turkey industry which includes meatbird and hatchery egg production is now the leading agriculturalindustry in Placer County, followed by the beef cattle and the plumindustries.
I wish to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to thosegrowers, packing house managers and others who assisted us in thepreparation of this report.
Sincerely,
~cultural Commission
