Fundraising Priority Setting (University-Wide, Academic Units, Administrative Units)

WHY SET FUNDRAISING PRIORITIES

• Defines the “Case for Support” – focus on outcomes not needs

• Aligns fundraising efforts and resources with priorities

• Ensures that UW faculty & staff can articulate priorities to potential financial supporters

• Helps identify prospective sources of private sector support

• Contributes to a stronger culture of philanthropy in each unit – and across the university

• Maximizes Waterloo’s philanthropic success

KEY ELEMENTS

• Fair and Equitable

• Alignment with strategic plan(s) – university-wide, unit specific

• Multi-year focus, annual review

• Not prohibitive in terms of amount of work for staff and faculty

• Manages expectations

• Results in a list of fundraising priorities that is the appropriate size and scope for case development – would be categorized and bundled as needed

Inputs to Fundraising Priority Setting

DECISION MAKING

• Submission and prioritization within the Faculty or Unit, authorized by Dean or Vice-President, with committee structure within the Faculty or Unit

• Provost and Vice-President, Advancement are aware of all projects and order of prioritization for proactive fundraising efforts

• All projects of $5 million+ are reviewed by the Provost for approval, and rated for proactive or reactive fundraising strategy
