TheAmericanFederationRecognitionAwardisgivenannualtoanindividualwhohasgone"aboveandbeyond"thecallofdutyinservingtheAFMS.Nominationsaresecuredfrompastpresidentsandthefinaldeterminationoftherecipientismadebyacommitteeofthethreemostrecentpastpresidents.

Our2013recipienthasbeenextremelyactiveintheCaliforniaFederation,havingheldmanycommit-teechairmanshipsandoffices,includingpresident.ShecurrentlyservesasCFMSHistorian.SheisalsoactiveintheNorthwestFederationwhereshealsoservesastheirHistorian.Theladylovesrecords!

ShebecameinvolvedwiththeAFMSwhileshewasCFMSPresidentandhasbeenafirmsupporteroftheAFMSEndowmentFund,ScholarshipFoundation,SCRIBE(SpecialCongressRepresentingInolvedBulletinEditors).In1995shefoundedtheEditorsHallofFameinordertorecognizethehardworkingclubandfederationnewslettereditorsacrossthecountry.ShewasoneofthreeAFMSmemberstoconstructahistorybooklettocommemoratethe50thanniversaryofAFMS(1997)andafollow-updocumentforthe60thanniversaryin2007.Andshe'salreadymakingplansforthe70thAnniversaryin2017!

SheservedasAFMSRegionalVPrepresentingtheCFMSandwaselectedAFMSPresidentfor2007-08.Asfatewouldhaveit,amajorhurricanestruckHouston,TXjustbeforetheAFMSConventionwastobeheldthereandthus,shebecametheonlyAFMSPresidenttocancelaconvention.Nottobedauntedshewentto"planB"andmajorbusiness(budgetapproval,electionofofficers)wasconductedbymail.

Ourrecipienthasalsobeenveryactiveinother"rockhound"activitiesincludingtheAmericanLandsAccessAssociationwhereshecurrentlyservesasPresident.

DarleneGunsolus,KarenBoger,andallthemembersoftheJackson-villeGem&MineralSocietyaretobecongratulatedonthejobtheydidhostingtheAFMS/SFMSShow inSeptember. Themeetings,banquets,andtheshowitselfwerewelldoneandenjoyable.Thethingthatstoodoutthemosttomewasthehospitalitythatwasextendedtothoseofusattendingfromaroundthecountry.

IamexcitedaboutthecomingyearfortheAFMSandverypleasedtobeworkingwithanoutstandinggroupofofficersandcommitteechairs.Ihavecommunicatedwitheachofthemandrespecttheirabilityandtheirdedicationtothebettermentofourhobby.Thesamegoesfortheofficerswhowillservingourregionalfederations.Asrockhounds,wecomefromallpartsofthecountryandmanydifferentbackgrounds,butwehavea loveforourhobby,arespectforoneanother,andadesiretoimproveourclubsandstrengthenourfederations.

Now,alittlebitaboutmyself.IhavebeenamemberoftheTulsaRockandMineralSocietyfor54years,havingjoinedasajuniorinNovemberof1959.IearnedaBSinGeologyfromtheUniversityofOklahomaandaMSinGeologyfromtheUniversityofColoradoandworkedasapetroleumgeologistinHoustonTXbeforethearmydecidedtheyneededmemorethanTexacodid.Aftergettingoutofthearmy,IbecameahighschoolscienceteacherintheTulsaPublicSchools,retiringin2000.Itaughtmostlycoursesinbiologyandphysicsbutdidgettoteachgeologyforthirteenyears.PaleontologyismymainareaofinterestandIhavearatherextensivefossilcollection.Ialsoenjoycollectingminer-als,rocks,andcuttingmaterialbutappreciateallphasesofourhobby;mustadmitIhaven’tdoneanylapidaryworkinover30years.MywifeLindasharesmyinterestinourhobbyandhasbeentheAFMSBulletinEditorsAdvisorychairforseveralyears.WehavethreegrownsonscurrentlylivinginLongmontCO,NashvilleTN,andHoustonTX.

Onceagain,IfeelhonoredtobeservingasyourAFMSPresidentthisyearandamverymuchlook-ingforwardtoitandhopingtoattendasmanyoftheregionalfederationshowsaspossible.Iwillbesharingmythoughtswithyouonanumberofaspectsofourhobbyandfederationinfuturemessages.Pleasefeelfreetocontactmewithyourconcernsandsuggestions.

AttheUniformRulesCommitteemeetingthisyear,thecommitteepassed6changestotheURC,whichwilltakeeffectonJanuary1,2014.ThemostnotablechangesaretoDivisionA-OPEN.In2014eachofthe9classesinDivisionAmaybeawardedTrophy#1,ifqualificationscoresaremet.ThiswilleliminatecompetitionbetweentheseparateclassesforasingletrophyforallofDivisionA.

AnotherchangeinDivisionAwillbeintheJudgingPointsforDivisionA-5Project.ThepointsassignedtoLabelsanduseofcharts,drawingsandpicturesarebeingjoined.TheLabelmustnowclearlystatewhattheprojectis.Theuseofcharts,drawingsandpicturesmaybeusedtoclarifyandstatetheproject.

Anotherstatement forOUT-OFCLASS isbeingadded toDivisionF-Fossils. Statement (e)willbeadded,clarifyingthatspecimensenteredasFossilswithbeoutofclassiftheyhaveanyLapidarywork.

Therewere 3 changes added toDivision I-BeadingandBeadwork.ThefirstchangeconcernsclassI-1throughI-3(StraightStringing).Itwillnolongerbenecessarytoaddthebeadingtechnique,asallitemsintheseclassesarelimitedtostraightstringing.Anotherchangetothese3classescon-cernstheuseofpearls.Glasspearlsdonothaveto

beknotted,butnaturalpearlsenteredinClassI-1 to I-3 have to beknotted. Knotting isnot required in beadweaving.

Another changeforDivision I clarifiesRule 25.7 (2) so thatonlywork in class I-4throughI-8willrequirethateachindividualpieceofworkbeidentifiedasoriginalworkoftheexhibitor,orcitetheoriginaldesigner.StraightStringingwillnolongerneedtobeidentifiedinthismanner.

Thecommitteealsomade3smallchangestotheAFMSMineralClassificationList.CELESTITEwillbeanacceptablealternativeforCELESTINE.Theother2changesareforconsistentspellingofFLUORAPATITE,andSMALTITE–varietyofSkutterudite.Aswiththerulechanges,thespellingchangeswillbecomeef-fectiveonJanuary1,2014.

The completeupdated ruleswill beavailablefromyourregionalsupplieschairorviatheAFMSwebsiteafterJanuary1,2014.

TerryisrightinthemiddleofsomeofthebestMontanarockhoundingareas.We'llhavenumeroustripstotheGravelBarsontheYellowstoneRiver;productiveareasthatI'vebeenhuntingonannuallyfor40+years.Manyareaccessedonlythroughprivateproperty,butpermissionshavebeengranted.We'll behunting forMontanaagates, Jasper,PetrifiedWood, fossil coral,stromatolites,andnumerousother"oddities".

We'llhavenumeroustripsintoMontanafossilcountrytothePierreandBearPawformationareas,andwe'llcollectammonites,baculites,scaphites,natiloidsandmanyothershells(70-95millionyearsold)intheancientseabedareas.WearealsoworkingontripstoseveralareaswherewecancollectdinosaurfossilsfromtheHellCreekFormation.Moreinformationwillbeforthcomingasplansaresolidified.

Inaddition,we'llhaveanopportunitytotakeaguidedtourthroughtheEasternMontanaBadlands-aonceinalifetimeopportunity.
