Returning Items to the Hamilton Public Library

Social Story

www.hpl.ca

I have to return items to the library once I finish with them or

they are due back.

There are a few different ways to return items to the library:

•Dropbox•Sorter

•Returns area inside the library

Dropbox: The dropbox is located outside the library. Some libraries have more than one dropbox.

A dropbox can be a slot in the outside wall of the library. It is labelled Returns.

To return an item to the library, I push it through the slot.

A dropbox can also be a big metal box outside of the library.

To return an item to the library, I push it through the slot.

Sorter: The sorter is a machine that checks in your items. It is labelled Automated Returns.

It is located inside the library. Only some libraries have a sorter.

The screen will tell me to place one item on the belt. After I place one item on the belt, the belt will move.

My item will get checked in when it is inside.

Returns area inside the library: Library branches without a sorter will let me return items inside the

library during open hours.

Sometimes the returns area is a slot in a wall or on the side of the information desk.

It is always labelled Returns.

Sometimes there is no returns slot. In libraries without a returns slot, I need to return my items by bringing them right to the information desk.

Library staff will check in my items.

If my items are due but I want to keep them for a longer amount of

time, I can renew them.

I cannot renew an item if someone else has placed it on hold or if it is

Express though.

To renew at the self-check machines in the library, I need to place my library card so the barcode is under the red line.

Then, I enter my PIN which usually the last four numbers in my phone number.

On the screen that displays my name, there is a button to Renew.

I press this button to renew my items.

A list of my items will appear on the screen.

To renew everything, I press Renew All.

If I only want to renew certain items, I need to press the box beside the item’s name and then press Renew.

If my items renewed successfully, they will have a new due date.

I should check to make sure the renewal worked by looking at the

due dates.

I can also renew my items from my home computer.

I type in www.hpl.ca and log in to the catalogue with my library barcode and PIN.

First, I click on My HPL.

Then, I click on Checked Out.

I need to click the box beside the item or items I wish to renew.

Then, I need to click Renew.

I can also renew over the phone.

I call the phone number at the top of my returns slip and follow the

instructions spoken to me.

I can even call any library branch and renew by speaking to a staff

member.

I should always make sure to have my library card ready!

I have now returned or renewed my library items!
