NOTE MAKING
Student’s Name: Date: /12/2019
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :
The Great Wall of China was built to link existing fortifications into a united defense system and better keep invading
Mongol tribes out of China. It is the largest man-made monument ever to have been built and it is said that it is the
only one visible from space. Many thousands of people must have given their lives to build this huge construction.
The Great Wall of China is a series of towers made of stone, brick, earth, wood and other materials, generally built
along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China to protect the Chinese states and empires
against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe. Several walls were being built
as early as the 7th
century BCE; these, later joined together and made bigger and stronger, are now collectively
referred to as the Great Wall. Especially famous is the wall built (220-206 BCE) by Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor
of China. Little of that wall remains. Since then, the Great Wall has on and off been rebuilt, maintained and enhanced;
the majority of the existing wall is from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Other purposes of the Great Wall have included border controls, allowing the imposition of duties on goods
transported along the Silk Road, regulation or encouragement of trade and the control of immigration and emigration.
Furthermore, the defensive characteristics of the Great Wall were enhanced by the construction of watch towers, troop
barracks, garrison stations, signaling capabilities through the means of smoke or fire and the fact that the path of the
Great Wall also served as a transportation corridor.
The Great Wall stretches from Dandong in the east to Lop Lake in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the
southern edge of Inner Mongolia. A comprehensive archaeological survey, using advanced technologies, has
concluded that the Ming walls measure 8,850 km. This is made up of 6,259 km sections of actual wall, 359 km of
trenches and 2,232 km of natural defensive barriers such as hills and rivers. Another archaeological survey found that
the entire wall with all of its branches measures out to be 21,196 km.
King Zheng of Qin conquered the last of his opponents and unified China as the First Emperor of the Qin dynasty
(“Qin Shi Huang”) in 221 BCE. Intending to impose centralized rule and prevent the resurgence of feudal lords, he
ordered the destruction of some sections of the walls, however, he ordered building of new walls to connect the
remaining fortifications along the empire’s northern frontier. Transporting the large quantity of materials required for
-
DRSIS/INTEGRATED HOLIDAY HOMEWORK/2019-20 Page 9
construction was difficult, so builders always tried to use local resources. Stones from the mountains were used over
mountain ranges, while earth was used for construction in the plains.
The Great Wall concept was revived under the Ming dynasty in the 14th
century, to gain a clear upper hand over the
Mongolian tribes.
(a) On the basis of your reading of the above passage, make notes on it using headings and sub-headings.

7. Read the following extract and answer the following questions:
As agricultural production lagged in comparison to the mer cantile and commercial sectors, samurai and
daimyo did not fare as well as the merchant class. Despite efforts at fiscal reform, mounting opposition
seriously weakened the Tokugawa shogunate from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century, when years of
famine led to increased peasant uprisings. A series of “unequal treaties” in which stronger nations imposed
their will on smaller ones in East Asia, created further unrest, particularly the Treaty of Kanagawa, which
opened Japanese ports to American ships, guaranteed them safe harbor and allowed the U.S. to set up a
permanent consulate in exchange for not bombing Edo. It was signed under duress when Commodore
Matthew Perry menacingly sent his American battle fleet into Japanese waters.
In 1867, two powerful anti-Tokugawa clans, the Choshu and Satsuma, combined forces to topple the
shogunate, and the following year declared an “imperial restoration” in the name of the young Emperor
Meiji, who was just 14 years old at the time.
The Meiji Constitution of 1889–which remained the constitution of Japan until 1947, after World
War II–was largely written by ItōHirobumi and created a parliament, or Diet, with a lower house
elected by the people and a prime minister and cabinet appointed by the emperor. The peace and
stability of the Tokugawa period, and the economic development it fostered, set the stage for the
rapid modernization that took place after the Meiji Restoration. During the Meiji Period, which
ended with the emperor’s death in 1912, the country experienced significant social, political and
economic change–including the abolition of the feudal system and the adoption of a cabinet system
of government. In addition, the new regime opened the country once again to Western trade and
influence and oversaw a build-up of military strength that would soon propel Japan onto the world
stage.

Student’s Name: Date:
1. State Boyle's Law
2. Plot a graph between pressure (P) and volume (V) for a given mass of a gas at a fixed temperature.
3. State law of equipartition of energy.
4. The average number of degree of freedom of ideal gas molecules is five. The gas does 20J of work at
constant pressure. Find the increase in internal energy and heat absorbed by gas.
5. The average number of degree of freedom of an ideal gas molecule is six. The gas absorbs 120 J of
heat at constant pressure. Find the increase in internal energy of gas.
6. Using the law of equipartition of energy, calculate the total energy of one mole of mono-atomic,
diatomic and tri-atomic gases?
7. How many degrees of freedom are there due to vibration motion of diatomic gas molecules?
8. How many degrees of freedom are there for mono-atomic, diatomic and tri-atomic gas due to
translational and rotational motion only?
9. Find in average increase in kinetic energy of a molecule of gas per unit rise in temperature.
10. What is meant by the term ' Molar specific heat ' of a gas? The molar specific heat of hydrogen in the
temperature range of about 250 K to 750 K is about (5/2) R. At lower temperatures the value of molar
specific heat of hydrogen decreases to the value typical of mono-atomic gases (3/2) R while at higher
temperatures, it tends to the value (7/2) R. Explain.
11. State the factors on which mean free path of a gas molecule depend.
12. What do you mean by the number of degrees of freedom of a dynamical system? How many degrees of
freedom are associated with
a. a bob of an oscillating simple pendulum b. an insect moving on a horizontal floor c. a buzzing bee d. a particle moving in a plan

NATIONALISM-2
Student’s Name: DATE:
I. Read the following and answer:
Globalization, nationalism, and the relations between them have been the subjects of debate
among scholars in the international relations discipline. Both concepts have an important
position in our contemporary world. Their importance lies in the creation of modern societies
and nation-states, and their role in a world in which interdependence has increased. As a matter
of fact, nationalism has had a great deal of difficulty surviving in this world, and some would
argue that it has become less important. However, others would say that nationalism is
benefiting from globalization and is becoming more important than ever. Therefore, to explore
the effects of globalization on nationalism and to address their relationship, this essay is going
to look at the concepts of globalization and nationalism, how both concepts come to interact
with each other, and what the key aspects are of this interaction.

I. Read and answer accordingly:
Before the United Nations' adoption of resolution 2908 (XXVII) on 2 November 1972, The
People's Republic of China vetoed the former British colony of Hong Kong's right to self-
determination on 8 March 1972. This sparked several nations' protest along with Great Britain's
declaration on 14 December that the decision is invalid. Decades later a nationalist
independence movement, dubbed as the Hong Kong independence movement has emerged in the
now Communist Chinese controlled territory. It advocates the autonomous region to become a
fully independent sovereign state.
