AAP State Pediatric Preparedness Learning Collaborative

Virtual Meeting #4

Monday, February 24, 2020 3:00pm ET/2:00 pm CT

WELCOME AND OBJECTIVES

• Goals of the Learning Collaborative include:

– Connecting pediatric and public health partners.

– Determining what types of education are needed to support improved pediatric preparedness at the state-level.

– Identifying criteria/benchmarks to assess and improve state pediatric preparedness.

– Expanding efforts through state or regional pediatric teams or discussions.

• Since H1N1, challenges in pediatric/public health collaborations continue. During this Learning Collaborative, we will hear perspectives from 2 public health leaders who are also oversee CDC PHEP and other relevant federally-funded projects. They will share their experience in pediatric preparedness.

• Hopefully, discussions will reveal new opportunities!

OREGON PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION

• Lead agency for Emergency Support Function 8, Health and Medical

• Administers 2 cooperative agreements:

– Public Health Emergency Preparedness Cooperative Agreement (CDC) = PHEP

– Hospital (Healthcare) Preparedness Program Cooperative Agreement (ASPR) = HPP

• Subawardees:

– 33 local public health authorities

– 9 federally recognized Tribes

COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES

• Identify populations with access and functional needs

• Develop or expand child-focused partnerships

• Conduct inclusive risk planning

• Pediatric surge planning (healthcare coalitions)

• Collaborate with EMSC (FYI: EMSC state partnership grantees are required to have a pediatrician on the program’s advisory council)

• Identify and consult with subject matter experts

• Reunification planning

CDC/ORAU-PCH-UDOH 2014 WORKSHOP

• July 29-31, 2014, in person stakeholder workshop

• CDC-ORAU, State of Utah, and Primary Children’s Hospital collaborative effort to develop and host a workshop addressing health and medical response for pediatric populations in disasters and emergency events.

• Two pediatric medical surge events were processed – public health emergency with notice (pandemic) and no-notice event (earthquake).

• GOAL-Advancing coordination and planning between the pediatric hospital and general healthcare systems, incorporating public health, emergency management, and other community partners, to address the delivery of healthcare in a pediatric surge event.

• How to sustain partnerships when there isn’t an active emergency?

• What about joint exercise planning?

NEXT STEPS

• AAP will send out a proposed final state pediatric preparedness action plan/checklist to seek input from you!

• Watch for a calendar appointment to save the date for the 5th

and final Learning Collaborative virtual meeting to wrap things up from Breanna Smith (bsmith@aap.org).

• After the final meeting, you will receive a follow-up assessment.
