Homework Set No. 3 ChE 363 Summer 2013 R.B. Eldridge
Problem No. 1
Text Problem 6.8
Problem No. 2
Text problem 6.11
Problem No. 3
Text problem 6.13 (Aspen solution only)
Problem No. 4 (in class exercise)
By means of a packed column, acetone is being absorbed from air into a nonvolatile absorption oil. The
entering gas contains 25 mol % acetone. The absorption oil contains 1.5 mol % acetone. The exiting liquid
contains 8 mol % acetone, with the total acetone absorbed equal to 80 percent.
a) Using the Stichlmair model, determine the tower diameter at 80% of flood.
b) Using the Onda mass transfer model, determine the packed tower height {Spreadsheet Problem}
Data:
Equilibrium relationship : y = 2.5 x
Tower pressure = 1 atm.
Packing description = # 25 metal Pall rings
Gas rate = 100 lbmols / hr
MWt of oil = 110 lb/lbmol
Temp of column = 100 F
Density of liquid = 40.6 lb/ft3
Density of gas = 0.0888 lb/ft3
Viscosity of liquid = 0.7 cP
Viscosity of gas = 0.018 cP
Surface tension (oil/air) = 45 dyne/cm
NOTE: - Assume plug flow of vapor and liquid
