Huntington SeniorNet:

Background:

We are proud to be the first SeniorNet Computer Center on Long Island.

Our center was developed in partnership with the Family Service League, Inc. FSL is a well-respected, (78 year old) human resource organization serving Suffolk County from Huntington to the East end of Long Island.

Since its inception in March of 1999 until December of 2003, SeniorNet@FSL has conducted 230 classes and trained 2490 Students.

Huntington SeniorNet:

We have:

a newly refurbished laboratory learning center

13 computers. One for the instructor, 12 for students (one student to a computer).

Student manuals to help you study for and review the lessons.

Some of the courses have diskettes for you to practice with.

Each class has one instructor and at least two coaches . The coaches help you if there is a

problem.

SeniorNet Users Group: ( SNUG) is a group that meets the third Tuesday of the month with either a guest speaker or a group discussion of a topic of interest to the members present.

The KeySpan / SeniorNet Computer Refurbishing Project:

volunteers from SeniorNet refurbish older KeySpan computers for use by not-for-profit organizations. Close to 2200 computers to date.

Awards: - The New York State Coalition for the

Aging, Inc has named the SeniorNet @ FSL Huntington despite its relatively “young” status, a first place winner in the 2001 Senior Services Achievements Awards in the category of “Seniors and Technology”. The purpose of the achievement award program is to honor outstanding, innovative and creative senior services that have long-range impact on senior citizen and/or the community.

- SeniorNet Volunteer (Slava Vero) was among the 101 volunteers honored by the Huntington Chamber of Commerce on January 16th, 2002. The office of 18th Legislator District Jon Cooper nominated her for her services to SeniorNet.

SeniorNet Volunteers Slava Vero and Don Weidman were featured in Newsday’s “The Everyday Hero” page.

On Friday, May 7th, SeniorNet @ FSL Huntington dedicated the grand reopening of the newly refurbished lab and the renaming of the lab as “The Don Weidman Computer Learning Center”.

Don Weidman: He was one of the founders and the paramount leader of this center.
