Welcome to New Orleans and the 92nd Annual Convention of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation. We’re glad you’re here and hope you enjoy your stay.
Many of us come to New Orleans each year to do the work of our organization, your organization, but also to be with friends and family to savor all the flavors the Crescent City has to offer. Ours is a family convention and I hope you’ll agree that with our youth events, Women’s Leadership Committee and YF&R programs, as well our commodity conferences, our convention offers something for everyone.
For the last 92 years the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation has stood by the state’s farmers, ranchers and rural residents. Your membership in our organization is vital and we know our continued success depends on members like you. Grassroots involvement has made our organization what it is today and all that it will be in the future.
Many of you have been attending our convention for decades and on behalf of our entire organization I want to thank you for your involvement. Your commitment at the parish, state and national levels will ensure agriculture’s success for years to come. If this is your first time here as a Women’s Leadership Committee member, YF&R, voting delegate or commodity committee member, I want to thank you and urge your continued involvement in our organization. And if you’re the proud parent of a local parish youth contest winner, I congratulate you. We’re glad you and your family are here. As we move through our four-day convention our voting delegates will work diligently to establish the policies that will guide our organization for the next 12 months. Our Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee will engage in contests and discussions that will continue to build a foundation for the future of young farmers across Louisiana. And our youth activities will foster and promote the spirit of competition among young people from parishes across the state.
This year marks some special milestones for our organization. We’ll honor longtime Louisiana Farm Service Agency Director Willie Cooper with our Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Cooper retired in January as the longest serving FSA director in the country. He remains a true friend of Farm Bureau and is certainly deserving of this recognition.
We’ll also bid farewell to Jackie Theriot, our Secretary-Treasurer for the last 20 years. While Jackie has served on our executive committee since 1995, his service to Louisiana agriculture and the state’s sugar industry spans 50 years. Our organization, indeed all of Louisiana agriculture, is better because of Jackie’s service. We congratulate him and his wife Sue on this occasion. Again, welcome to New Orleans. Thanks to your leadership our organization will remain the “Voice of Louisiana Agriculture.”
