At the base of the WashingtonMonument, eight dancers from theWashington D.C. Okinawa Kai andten junior high school students rep-resenting the people of Okinawapresented an engraved memorialstone to the people of the UnitedStates, fulfulling a promise made135 years earlier.
In 1854, the Kingdom of Ryukyupresented the original Ryukyu Stoneto Commodore Matthew C. Perryduring his expedition to Japan. Thestone was given by the Ryukyu peo-ple to help construct a monument inmemory of “The Great Madarin,”President George Washington.Commodore Perry’s plan was toembed the “Lew Chew Stone” in theWashington Monument. However, the Ryukyu Stone was lost, probablywhen the Civil War halted construc-tion of the monument.
In 1984, the Ryukyu AmericaHistorical Research Society discov-ered that the Ryukyu Stone wasmissing, although records indicatedthat it had been embedded in themonument. In cooperation with theNational Park Service of the UnitedStates Department of the Interior, the research society obtained aspecial exception from an 1899decree forbidding the acceptance ofstones from outside the UnitedStates.
On August 4, 1989, a new RyukyuStone, a 2-by-4-foot coral blockweighing 396 pounds, was placedat the 310-foot level of theWashington Monument, joining 192 other memorial stones fromcountries, states, and civic organi-zations. The embedment ceremonyrepresented the efforts of theOkinawan people to honor one ofAmerica’s greatest heroes and com-pleted the mission started byCommodore Perry over a centuryearlier.
The Ryukyu Stone reads in part:
THE RYUKYU STONE IS PRESENTEDIN FRIENDSHIP AND ADMIRATIONTO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITEDSTATES OF AMERICA AND DEDICAT-ED TO THE MEMORY OF GEORGEWASHINGTON. MAY HIS PEACEFULIDEALS AND STATESMANSHIP BELONG REMEMBERED AND UPHELD.FROM THE PEOPLE OF OKINAWAPREFECTURE, JAPAN.

Uchinaguchi, the Okinawan language,is a palette of colorful differences. This diver-sity is further enhanced by the “local color”provided by Hawaii’s Okinawans.
In an effort to promote basic under-standing of such a multi-faceted language, the ladies of Hui O Laulima selected somewords and phrases that were commonly usedby their families during informal settings. Inother words, when they “talked story” amongfamily and friends.
