5G Key Enabling Technology• Future demands for both human-centric and machine-centric• Flexible resource allocation and sharing schemes• Flexible air interface• New waveforms• Agile access techniques• MIMO• Integration between small cells and Ultra Dense Network (UDN)

• Integrate both fronthaul and backhaul into a common transportnetwork

• Achieve capacity, coverage, reliability, latency and improvements inenergy consumption within:• Converged optical-wireless-satellite infrastructure for network

access, backhaulling and fronthaulling signals over the physicalconnections

• Leverage flexible intra-system spectrum usage• Optimal utilization of the specific strengths of the different

underlying infrastructures (e.g leverage multicast for satellite orflexible spectrum for optical)

• Network Function Virtualization (NFV) leverage recent advances in servervirtualization and enterprise IT virtualization

• Software Defined Networking (SDN) propose logical centralization ofcontrol functions and relies on advances in server scale out and cloudtechnologies

• 5G provide a unified control for multi-tenant networks and servicesthrough functional architectures deployment accros many operator’sframeworks

• Fundamental Shift in paradigm from the current “service provisioningthrough controlled ownership of infrastructures” to a “unified controlframework through virtualization and programmability of multi-tenantnetworks and services”

• New security concept in 5G: Trustworthiness of information Integrity of remote platforms Contextual correctness Proof of possession

Spectrum Considerations

Trends in the spectrum requirements for wireless broadband accessand backhaul 5G access networks for some services will require wide

contiguous carrier bandwidth (e.g., hundreds of MHz up to afew GHz) to be provided at a very high overall system capacity.

Considerations for new wireless broadband spectrum above 6 GHz Ultra dense small cell Supported by massive MIMO

Spectrum management methods Dynamic sharing (cognitive system)

Possible single channel FD

OTHER IMPACTS TO PONDER

• 5G standardization must define uncertainties related to, among others:

– new threats to cybersecurity,

– trust or privacy;

– trends in economic growth around the world;

– public acceptance of wireless and applied-field technologies; and

– legislative restrictions
