Overview

• Software Developed By Hughes Associated, Inc.– ECS/9300, ADS/PHX, FE-13

• Kidde-Fenwal Developed Software– 3M™ NOVEC ™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid

– Argonite

Equivalent Length

• When a fluid flows through a section of pipe, pressure is lost

• When a fluid flows through a fitting or other piping object, pressure is also lost

– This loss is usually expressed in equivalent feet of pipe

Hydraulic Calculation Method

• The design software calculates the pressure lost in each pipe section due to:

– the actual length of pipe

– the equivalent length of any objects

– the change in elevation (gravity)

Agent quantity must be assigned to nozzles

To distribute agent evenly between nozzles, click ‘Auto’

Balance must equal zero

Once Balance equals zero, click ‘OK’

Repeat this process for each enclosure that will be protected

When finished, click ‘Next’

Agent quantity must be rounded UP to a whole pound

After adjusting the quantity, click ‘Set to New’

Edit Menu Functions• Cut downstream pipe section (CTRL+X)

• Copy downstream pipe section (CTRL+C)

• Paste pipe section (CTRL+V)

• Delete downstream pipe section

• Delete all the piping

• Save downstream pipe section

• Open pipe section and paste it on

To connect pipe, add an Object and choose either a Flex Hose or Valve

Outlet Adapter(Note that 3” valves will allow direct attachment of pipe and/or fittings)

Continue to add pipe segments, using tees and elbows to connect them

When it is time to add a nozzle, click the ‘Add Nozzle’ button and select the

appropriate nozzle for this enclosure

When your network is complete, click ‘Next’

This screen tabulates all of the information for each pipe section. The information can be edited through this screen, if changes are necessary.

Click ‘Default Pipe Diameters’ to automatically insert pipe diameters based on downstream nozzle flow rates

Check nozzle types and make sure nozzles are 2” diameter or less

When the software is allowed to select new nozzles, it will also adjust pipe sizes to attempt to clear any warnings. If the designer prefers to keep the specified pipe sizes, the pipe can be locked to prevent the software from making changes to the pipe section.

Saving prior to running the calculations will ensure against lost data in the event that the computer crashes while running

To view the complete report, select ‘Multiple Reports’

To create a PDF file, select ‘Export Report (PDF Format)’

ADS/Phoenix Series Software

• ADS/Phoenix software is identical to the ECS/9300 software, with the addition of one screen...

Use to specify the nitrogen orifice fitting (controls flow of nitrogen into

FM-200 cylinder)

Nitrogen Orifice can be set by the designer or selected by the software

Selecting an orifice size is similar to picking a nozzle orifice

Manifold Edit

• New manifolds can also be designed from the Agent Source screen

– Different manifold configuration

– New manifold for a different number of cylinders than what is offered by default

Creating a new manifold always starts bymaking a copy of an existing manifold

Select the desired manifold type (End, Center, or H)and an appropriate cylinder quantity and size

Manifold type cannot be changed onceoriginal template hasbeen copied

A different bitmap may be selected; the picture shown willnot reflect the quantity of cylinders or the manifold type

First section of the manifold represents the connection between the cylinder outlet and manifold header; this is repeated for all cylinders

Pipe Length(represents total hard pipe; do not include length of flex hoses)

Pipe Elevation is the net change in height from the outlet to the manifold header

Add any fittings within the section (‘First section’ should not include tees)

Others box allows for selection of hoses, check valves, or other Kidde supplied pipe objects

If the object can not be accounted for in any of the above boxes, the object’s equivalent length may be added to the ‘Equivalent Length Added’ box

Second section of the manifold represents the entire length from end to riser (note that this is half for a Center manifold)

Add 1 Side tee for every cylinder in the manifold

-PLUS-Add appropriate fitting for riser:-Center manifold

uses a Side tee at the riser-End manifold

uses an elbow at the riser

• Connected reserve systems require a manifold as well

ADS/Phoenix Manifolds

• When using a manifold in a ADS/PHX system:

– Only the FM-200 cylinders are connected to the system piping

– Nitrogen cylinders are connected only to the Actuation Assembly

– Same rules apply

– Design interface is the same
