3.7 Perpendicular Lines

Perpendicular slopes and equations

Perpendicular Slopes

Slope of perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes.

If m1 = -2, then it opposite reciprocal would be ½.

y = - 2x + 3 and y = ½x – 3 would be perpendicular lines

y = - 2x + 3 and y = ½x – 3 would be perpendicular lines

Are these lines perpendicular?

-2x + 7y = - 4

7x + 2y = 10

Write the equation perpendicular to the line y = 3x – 2 and through the point (3, 4)

The equation represents a mirror.

A ray of light hits the mirror at (3, 1).

What is the equation of the line that is perpendicular to the mirror at this point?
