Station #1: Fish Identification – (3 photos required)Draw three fish, list Phylum, Class, and common name. List three characteristics that allowed you to identify each fish.
Zooplankton
Dinoflagellates
Diatoms
Phytoplankton
Station #2: Plankton Identification Draw examples of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the spaces below.
Station # 2: Plankton Identification (Continued): (2 photos required)
1. Which is more abundant in today's sample: phytoplankton or zooplankton?________________
2. Estimate the percentages of phytoplankton and zooplankton in today's sample.
A. Percent phytoplankton:______________
B. Percent zooplankton:________________
3. Would you characterize this as a phytoplankton or zooplankton bloom?___________________
4. If it is a phytoplankton bloom which are more abundant - diatoms or dinoflagellates? Why?

Station #3: Invertebrate Identification (Two photos required)
Draw three invertebrates. List the Phylum, Subphylum or Class, and describe how the animal feeds or what it eats.

Station #4: Water Clarity and Water Color: Go to the Bow (2 photos required)
Secchi Disk and Forel-ule
1. The secchi disk allows scientists to measure water clarity. The marks on the rope are at 1 meter increments. Lower the secchi disk into the water until it disappears from view. Record the depth in meters that the disk dissappeared.
What is the water clarity (in meters)?_______________
2. The forel-ule scale assigns a number to the color of the ocean. This reflects productivity (the amount of
photosynthesis) in ocean water. Send the secchi disk down two meters. Hold the colored test tubes over the disk and match a value to the ocean.
What is Forel-ule scale value?___________
3. In your own words describe the color of the water as it is reflected off the secchi disk.

4. What factors affect water clarity?
__________________________________________________________________________________
5. What can affect water color? Why is the ocean blue one day, greenish another day, and reddish on some days during spring and summer?
