1.ADVANCED COURSES

ENGLISH, MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES

The Middle School Child

PURPOSE

❏ The advanced course offerings were designed for the middle school child.

❏ Adolescent ages, social-emotional development, “Academic Maturity” were at the core of the entire process.

❏ All Students will have the opportunity to take up to two advanced courses per year in middle school.

▪ If students want to choose an additional advanced-level course refer to iReady data, in addition to STUDENT GRADES and ATTENDANCE RECORDS.

▪ Please also keep in mind the social-emotional and academic maturity of the student.

▪ Administration will consider additional advanced-level course using the following criteria:

▪ If a student is two grade levels above in the “Overall Placement” column in iReady Reading or Math, he or she can take an additional advanced-level course.

+ MORE THAN 2 ADVANCED COURSES

▪ For example, in order for an additional advanced-level course to be considered, the placement score for the course must be reflected in iReady performance.

▪ iReady Reading: Advanced English or Advanced Social Studies

▪ iReady Math: Advanced/Accelerated Math or Advanced Science

▪*2 GRADE LEVELS HIGHER THAN CURRENT GRADE

+ MORE THAN 2 ADVANCED COURSES

+ MATH COURSE OF STUDY - ACCELERATED COURSES & PATHWAY

Accelerated courses have been carefully aligned and designed for middle school students who show particular motivation and interest in mathematics.

In this pathway, students meet all the standards of Grade 7, Grade 8, and Algebra I with Probability within the

Grade 7 Accelerated and Grade 8 Accelerated courses, thus merging all the standards from three years of

mathematics into two years. This enables students to move through the content more quickly. Students who

complete this pathway will be prepared to enter Geometry with Data Analysis in Grade 9 and then accelerate

directly into Algebra II with Statistics in Grade 10, thus providing them with an opportunity to take additional,

specialized mathematics coursework in Grades 11 and 12, such as AP Calculus, AP Statistics, or college

dual enrollment classes. Clearly, this pathway will be challenging and should be reserved for Grade 7

students who demonstrate a high level of motivation and interest in studying mathematics.
