According to the U.S. Energy Administration, there
are now more than 26 million alternative fuel vehi-
cles on our nation’s roads. By 2020, the number is ex-
pected to reach 33 million and balloon to 76 million
by 2050. Like gasoline and diesel powered vehicles,
many of these alternative fuel cars and trucks will end
up in automotive recycling facilities.
Also like their conventionally fueled counterparts,
AFVs are fundamentally safe. However, there are key
differences and recycling workers must be proper-
ly informed and trained about the best and safest
procedures for addressing an AFV when it arrives at
the yard. AFV’s unique fuel properties and vehicle
For nearly as long as cars and trucks have
been on the road, they have been reused
and recycled. Since the early 20th century,
automotive recycling facilities have played
a valuable role in the recovery, rebuilding,
and reselling of usable vehicles and their
parts. Today’s new vehicle technologies,
including alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), bring new challenges
to the automotive recycling industry – and those challenges will
only increase in the years ahead.

from the automotive recycling standpoint, but pose
no more of a safety risk that conventional cars and

Automotive recycling companies who deal with
AFVs are responsible for worker training, and for
establishing efficient and safe standard operating
procedures for each type of AFV. A clear policy for
identifying, labeling, defueling, dismantling, recy-
cling, and crushing AFVs must be set, along with the
associated education for all team members. Failure to
set procedures, and to provide appropriate training
and required personal protective equipment (PPE)
can result in inadvertent fuel leaks and possible injury
to personnel.
AFV Recycling Procedures
Currently, there are more than a dozen alternative
fuels in production or under development for use in
AFVs. The fuels most commonly used for AFVs include:
• Biodiesel
• Electricity
• Ethanol
• Hydrogen
• Natural Gas
• Propane

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. That saying has been in
circulation for decades, perhaps centu-ries. In the modern world, this slogan means much more than just profiting off what others disregard; today, this concept is the base of a better future for our environment, thus, our lives.
With technological growth, a man’s “trash” has differentiated over time, but recycling for a better tomorrow has only differed in the means of innova-tion. At We Buy Key Fobs, we have tak-en this old saying and kept it alive, of-fering folks a place where they can get rid of their old, useless, or even bro-ken, key fobs. Do you have a bunch of dormant key fobs lying around? Would you like to make a little extra cash? If so, then we are your guys!
You are probably wondering why we would want your old key fobs, and how we could be possibly reusing such bro-ken devices. Well, it’s simple. You give us your old key fobs, and we fi x them up, and re-sell them at a cheaper price. The outcome? Money in your pocket and less landfi lls. You would be sur-prised about how many car key fobs ac-cumulate over time! To give you a bet-ter idea, well, nearly 100 million cars were manufactured worldwide in just 2015 alone! There are millions upon millions of key fobs out there, and with the car manufacturing industry showing no signs of slowing, and with-out proper recycling, this gargantuan bunch of key fobs can be devastating for the environment. That is why we take pride in what we do!
What exactly do we do besides strive for a better future for our earth? Well, on top of re-purposing useless and bro-ken key fobs, we offer an array of other accommodations that makes us THE key fob guys!
We Buy Key Fobs is a proud member of the Automotive Recyclers Associ-
ation (ARA), a group dedicated to a cleaner earth, and a greener tomor-row. This also means that a donation is made back to ARA with every key fob you give us. It’s made in your name and does not affect your pocket whatsoever. We Buy Key Fobs takes cares of the do-nation amount; all you do is get money for your old key fobs. Not a bad deal, huh?
Our internal processes allow us to pay competitively, we offer free shipping, and our trusted company also provides the quickest payment turnaround in the industry! This means that you will get the most for your archaic key fobs, and faster!
There are a few variables you should keep in mind. Recycling key fobs is greatly comparable to recycling metal. Different key fobs are worth different amounts, and some are not worth any-thing. Either way, we will help you free up some space and properly dispose of the worthless key fobs!
Saving key fobs is easy, just create a designated bin for your old key fobs and toss them in! Before you know it, that bin will go from key fob fi lled to cash fi lled!
Turning trash into treasure is what We Buy Key Fobs is all about. To turn those old key fobs into a wad of cash, contact us at (402) 671-5100, or email us at info@webuykeyfobs.com. You can also check us out at webuykeyfobs.com. Our number one goal is to replace your pile of key fobs with some good ole, cold hard cash! Contact us today! ■

Thomason Machine Works, Inc. was founded in 1978 by James (Jim)
Thomason. Thomason Machine Works
is now a second-generation company,
with sons Dave and Mike, along with
Jim, running day-to-day operations. The
company is known for high-precision
machining, including production of fas-
teners and fastener replacement/repair
parts, feed rollers and transfer fingers
and arms, and other parts for automo-
tive, aerospace and drill rig customers
around the world.CHALLENGE In all, Thomason has 12 CNC ma-
chining centers, six CNC turning cen-
ters, two wire EDM machines, several
manual mills, manual lathes, surface
grinders and ID/OD grinders, and oth-
er supporting equipment. However, Thomason, like many sim-
ilar-sized shops that run full throttle
almost every shift, struggled with tool
inventory management – especially
accountability and organization. The
company stored most of its tooling
in cabinets in its primary office area.
There were also containers throughout
the shop, as each machinist had their
own personal stash of taps, end mills,
drills and other tools. “It was very unorganized,” says David
Thomason. “One day, four guys would
have a half-dozen taps that were the
right thread size; the next day, no one
had any taps that were the proper size
for what we had to machine.” SOLUTION MSC had deep knowledge of Thom-
ason’s needs; the companies had been
working together for more than 12
years. Upon examination, when MSC’s
metalworking experts suggested an in-
ventory management solution, the ben-
efits quickly became apparent.
“We now have an MSC ControlPoint
Drawer unit that’s supported by a few
accessory lockers that all run off the
same inventory management software,”
says Mike Thomason. The unit is loaded
with almost 800 items, including Kenna-
metal, Accupro, Hertel and Allied tools,
and a range of MRO supplies. The
company plans to expand capacity with
more units in the near future. Tool reordering is automatic, oc-
curring each night through the unit’s
inventory management software, pro-
grammed with preset quantities based
on Thomason’s needs. Delivery is made
via UPS the next morning. All MSC
shipments come clearly marked and
separated for the vending machine so
anyone at Thomason can put every-
thing away in minutes.RESULTS “The MSC ControlPoint Inventory
Management solution has helped us
control and manage our inventory on
a daily basis,” says Jessica Schoester,
Thomason’s customer service direc-
tor. “Over the years, MSC has helped
us reduce our tool waste by up to 30
percent.” She includes cost reductions
both in removing unused tools from
inventory and the savings in reduced
consumption and tool hoarding. “It en-
ables us to manage the way things are
used,” she adds, “to make sure there’s
no waste or unnecessary expendi-tures on our part.” “What MSC really provides is a
total inventory management solu-tion that actually doubles as a time management system, because our management can now focus on getting work pushed through the shop faster, versus wasting time on the phone ordering bags of oil dry,” adds Mike Thomason. He estimates that they have saved one
hour per day ordering and processing
purchase orders, which comes to a sav-
ings of $18,000 per year.SUCCESS FACTORSReject Business as Usual: You’re un-
der pressure to run faster and smarter;
don’t accept the status quo. When tools
are scattered around the shop, and you
find yourself running out of inventory
– which stops production – you need to
make a change. Get a Second Pair of Eyes: Work with a
supplier with deep industry experience
and the ability to provide advice on tool-
ing, MRO and your production process-
es. An expert partner can bring you new
ideas that can have a dramatic impact
on your business.

& People, Process
I have only been at Copart for two years, but in that
short time, I have learned how important it is for a
company to excel in all three of these areas in order
to succeed. That is because each element is depen-
dent upon both of the others. You can have great people, but if they don’t have the
tools (technology) and the direction (process) they
need, they won’t reach their full potential. Similarly,
process without the people or technology to back it
up may look great on paper, but it will be nothing
more than good intentions if nobody is there to carry
it out. And technology without a defined process or
the heart of a team of people to back it up won’t get
you very far. I feel lucky that I ended up at a company that puts
proper emphasis on all three areas, giving people the
support they need to do what they need to do, both
for our own employees and also for our customers.People
What I have been most pleasantly surprised about
in my time at Copart is the people. I have enjoyed be-
ing part of the team here, and I feel like this is the type
of place where ideas are encouraged and employees
are respected for “challenging the norm.”
I have seen the progress as ideas from Copart loca-
tion staff grow to be implemented as new policies. I
have also seen employees who started as interns pro-
moted to specialist, manager and beyond.
It is clear to me that Copart has a team spirit that is
unique and empowering. Ideas are encouraged, and
“W hat’s your vision?” This can seem like an odd question when
all of us are working so hard to complete today’s tasks. But for
our professional and personal lives, having a vision of what
the future should look like can serve as a roadmap for what
we’re doing today. Even with our ever-busier schedules, it’s important to look up every once
in a while to make sure we’re going in the right direction. Here at Copart, our vision is,
“To provide an unmatched experience, every day and everywhere, driven by our people, pro-
cess and technology.”
By Amanda Zmolek
employees are challenged to make their ideas work.
This creates a culture of ownership and innovation
that helps to keep our technology moving forward. Process
Since I started at Copart, I’ve been dividing my
time between working with our IT department on the
Copart website and working with automotive recyclers
at tradeshows and industry events. Some people have
asked me how my title of Online Marketing Manag-
er relates to tradeshows. It may seem like these two
things aren’t connected, but if you ask me, technolo-
gy and relationships must work hand-in-hand.
I’m happy that I found a job where I can use my
experience in e-commerce to help auto recyclers and
to grow the relationships I built during my time at
GreenLeaf years ago. Copart is always searching for
ways to make things faster and easier for our custom-
ers, and what better way to do that than to get out and
talk to people face-to-face? I’ll admit that I’m biased – I will always enjoy work-
ing with people more than I like working with com-
puters – but I love it when we find win-win situations
where technology makes it easier for people to do
their jobs.
TechnologyOne example of technology making things better is
our online-only auction model. By running auctions
online, all bids are recorded automatically by our
technology, so our members can bid with confidence.

Members have a choice of where and when to bid because they can use the website on their desk-top or laptop computer, tablet or phone. The Copart website is “responsive,” meaning that it au-tomatically resizes for viewing on different size screens like tablets and smartphones. Members can also choose to bid on the Copart Mobile App while they’re on the go, which can be used on both Apple and Android devices. Many Copart members choose
to save time by pre-bidding, and Multi-Lot Bidding is a great feature for members who
want to pre-bid their way through a Sale List in a short
amount of time and get on with their day. Simply
navigate to a Sale List, enable the Multi-Lot Bidding
feature, enter your bids, click “Place Bids” and you’re
done.Updated search and filter options on Copart.com
mean that when you’re searching for a specific vehi-
cle, you can find what you need quickly. Type a vehicle
description in the search bar at the top of the website,
or start with a vehicle type or location, and narrow the
inventory as you choose – by odometer, transmission
type, engine size and more. The “Customize View” option is great for adding
or removing columns of Sale Lists and vehicle search
results so you can see the columns you need in the or-
der you want. Navigate to a page of vehicles and click
“Customize View” to see what columns you can move
or change. Your settings will save in your account, but
you can always click “Reset” if you need to go back to
the default view. For those members that visit our locations to pre-
view vehicles, the barcode scanning feature in the Co-
part Mobile App is a fast way to pull up the lot details
page of a vehicle you find at a Copart location. The
newest version of the app also features a license up-
loader which means members can upload documents
(photo ID or business licenses) simply by snapping a
photo with their phone.Certainly, these are features that make bidding fast-
er and more efficient, and all of them started out in
one way or another as an idea from an employee or a
customer. Our process is to develop new features with
our customers in mind, so if you have an idea about
how we can help you, please let us know! All auto re-
cyclers are welcome to call or email me directly, or you
can look for the Copart booth at an upcoming ARA
event near you. We appreciate your business, and
we’re here to help. n

for people to do their jobs.”
