LOOKING BACK OVER THE LAST YEAR
Our 2015-16 financial year was a busy and successful year for CPA Global; we achieved good growth in revenues and earnings, reset the corporate strategy, refreshed our brand, and set the foundations for future growth.
FY15/16 was a strong year in terms of financial performance. In our core business of IP management software, we achieved double-digit growth in revenues, driven by growth across all our core software products. In our IP renewals business, we saw robust year-on-year growth of +4.4% in IP Renewals volumes, ahead of global market growth, driven both by existing customers and by new customers.
We achieved particularly strong growth in the US, the world’s largest IP market, as well as in fast-growing IP markets in Asia Pacific, such as China. This momentum has been maintained and growth has accelerated into the next financial year, particularly in IP renewals.
Our strategic reset has focused us on our mission of helping customers to maximise the value of ideas through more integrated IP solutions, delivered via technology. As a result, we implemented a number of important changes to our product and service offering, our organisational structure, and the way that we work. These changes are enabling us
to meet the increasing demands
from our customers for greater
integration of technology,
systems and processes, and ease
of collaboration.
We continued to make significant
investments in technology, as
CPA Global becomes a truly
technology-led business. We
have upgraded and released
new versions of our software
products to the market. In
parallel, we have made excellent
progress in developing The IP
Platform, our ground-breaking
solution to create an integrated
software, data and services
proposition for IP professionals.
We also completed the
acquisition of Innography,
the best-in-class provider of
patent data and analytics,
which has brought world-leading
data science and technology
capabilities to CPA Global. While
Innography’s data and analytics
software provides a significant
growth opportunity in itself, the
roadmap for deep integration of
the Innography data and analytics
into our IP management software
also represents a transformational
shift within the IP industry.
In line with our strategy to strengthen our recurring business in IP management, we discontinued our small Legal Support Services division, a non-core business line that was primarily transactional, thus enabling us to focus on recurring income models in the IP sector.
We made several appointments to the management team during the year, with Ben Gujral joining us as Chief Financial Officer and Jean Hughes taking on the role of Director, Law Firms, responsible for further developing this important customer segment. As we accelerate our growth, Ben’s substantial experience as a CFO of private equity-backed and listed companies, together with his track record of managing growth businesses, will be invaluable. In addition, Innography’s talented management team, notably Tyron Stading and John Martin, are now also playing leading and influential roles within the overall organisation
and our technology strategy.
The impact of all these actions
created a positive momentum
throughout the business, which
has continued into the 2016-17
financial year.
DELIVERING GROWTH
BUSINESS & STRATEGY REVIEW
WWW.CPAGLOBAL.COM | PAGE 8
OUR BUSINESS
CPA Global now stands in an excellent position to lead in the IP management sector, and to grow sustainably for the long term.
There are strong structural growth drivers in the market for innovation and IP management. Total spending on Research & Development (R&D) continues to outgrow global GDP, more corporate value is locked up in the value of inventions, patents, brands and trademarks, and there is ever-greater focus from our customers on how to streamline the innovation process and maximise the value of their IP assets.
CPA Global is now able to address the entire innovation lifecycle: from idea creation and innovation management, through to portfolio management and commercialisation. Our business will continue to benefit directly from the increase in R&D and the consistent growth in the
total stock of global patents and trademarks. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the total stock of patents in force grew by +4.0% in 2015. This growth should be expected to continue well into the future, as today’s patent applications translate into further grants and renewals over the coming years. According to WIPO, in 2015, the total number of patent applications grew by +7.8% and the total number of grants grew by +5.2%.
CPA Global is the clear global market leader in our core business of IP management software and IP renewals. We have over 1,500 IP software customers and 40,000 regular active users of our software products overall. Our
market leadership in established
customer software sites
provides us with a significant
competitive advantage and the
bedrock for our cross-selling
strategy of additional integrated
lifecycle solutions.
Our fantastic group of loyal
software and renewals customers
stretches around the globe,
across both corporates and
law firms. We serve 80% of the
world’s top patent filers, and
our customer base is highly
diversified across industries and
geographies, with low levels
of concentration. We are the
leading player in North America,
the world’s largest IP market,
and we have the leading position
in China, the world’s fastest-
growing IP market.

As a result of this, our income
benefits from being both recurring
(over 80% of the total) and
highly visible in nature, primarily
from software, IP renewals, and
analytics subscriptions. This
provides a strong, predictable
and resilient income base, leaving
us well placed to pursue further
growth opportunities.
Our IP management software
is essential for the operations
of IP departments and IP law
firm practices, and is integrated
with our key solutions, including
IP renewals and IP data and
analytics. Currently, around 59%
of our gross income is enabled
by our broad range of software
products and from customers
who use our software.
This percentage has been
growing consistently over time.
Our technology-enabled business
model provides us with a strong
base from which to expand our
product offering and cross-sell
additional solutions.
OUR VISION
When I moved into the CEO role over a year ago, after 16 years in the IP sector, my main motivation was the opportunity to transform the way the IP industry works.
The way I see it, there are two
key challenges for the IP industry:
the “big data” challenge and the
“IP task execution” challenge.
Firstly, the “big data” challenge
is caused by the disaggregated,
non-standardised data
environment in which the sector
operates. Critical data is held
in multiple formats in different
languages in over 200 patent
and trademark office data sets
across the globe. This makes
getting actionable information,
in the form required by
customers, expensive, slow or
impossible. The problem has
starved IP decision-makers of the
insight and information needed
to make high-quality decisions.

We are addressing this
challenge through our suite
of information and analytics
products, integrated within
our IP management software.
We are also taking the lead in
creating data standards for the
entire IP sector using IP ONE
DATA, powered by Innography.
IP ONE DATA provides a unique
referential identifier for every IP
registration across the lifecycle,
and creates the data key that
is needed to solve data issues
across the industry.
Secondly, the “IP task execution”
challenge is caused by the
highly complex, quasi-legal,
multi-jurisdictional environment
in which IP professionals have
to operate to get and maintain
IP protection across global
markets. Not only is this hugely
complicated, the cost of getting
things wrong is extreme.
Executing on time-critical
tasks safely, securely and
efficiently across the globe is
in CPA Global’s DNA from our
heritage as a renewals provider.
Our ambition is to make all of
the administrative tasks along
the innovation lifecycle seem
effortless, but at the same time
provide our customers with full
transparency and control - and,
ultimately, peace of mind.
We have set CPA Global on
a mission to solve these two
fundamental problems and
to transform the IP industry.
Our new solutions are designed
to address these challenges,
essentially through developing and
harnessing the right technology.
OUR GROWTH STRATEGY
With this vision in mind, we are focused on executing a well-defined growth strategy.
Our core businesses of IP
management software and IP
renewals are already well placed
to benefit from the positive
market trends in IP, and we
expect these businesses to
grow in line with or ahead of
the market. In addition, there
is a substantial and tangible
opportunity to cross-sell
additional software and solutions
into our existing customer base.
Central to our strategy is our
development of The IP Platform,
a fully-integrated technology,
data and services SaaS solution,
available through a single sign-
on environment, which provides
our customers with best-in-class
solutions across the innovation
lifecycle. This will provide the
network that connects our
customers to us and to all other
participants in the innovation
and IP management process.
The IP Platform will offer
standardised datasets and a
single, connected environment
for IP professionals to conduct
all of their administrative tasks
easily, securely and efficiently.
CPA Global is uniquely
positioned to develop this truly
unified proposition for the IP
industry and to address the two
key challenges of big data and
task execution. Quite simply,
none of our competitors can
offer the range of proprietary
solutions or capabilities required
to develop a platform that
is capable of serving as an
integrated proposition. The IP
Platform provides support across
the entire innovation lifecycle
with standardised data in a
single environment.
BUSINESS & STRATEGY REVIEW
OUR VISION (CONTINUED)
WWW.CPAGLOBAL.COM | PAGE 11
The IP Platform infrastructure
was delivered on time in April
and the production environment
in July. The first solution we
took to market through The IP
Platform was our solution for
patent filing in November. This
represents a significant new and
adjacent market for CPA Global,
to enable the foreign filing process
to be executed more efficiently
and more simply through our
proprietary technology, and
several major customers are
already using the product.
Our upgraded renewals solution
will be available through The IP
Platform in early 2017, followed by
our next generation search and
docketing solutions. The beginning
of 2017 will also see the first of
our IP management software
products, FoundationIP, available
on The IP Platform, as well as the
integration of Innography’s patent
data and analytics products.
Our broad geographical footprint
and global sales coverage gives
us direct access to the key
markets across the world, and
our ability to take products
to market is unrivalled in our
industry. It is now a case of
leveraging our international
presence and continuing to refine
our go-to-market approach to
meet the changing needs of our
customers. In particular, Asia
Pacific is a very information-
hungry marketplace for IP, and
we believe our IP analytics and
search capabilities present an
opportunity for us to accelerate
our growth in the region.
Building on our leading position
in China, we intend to invest
further in that market in order
to capture the rapid growth in
patent applications as Chinese
corporates expand internationally.
The Law Firm market globally
also represents huge potential
for CPA Global. Given our law
firm heritage, it is a segment
we know better than any of
our competitors and one in
which we enjoy a significant
advantage. Recognising this,
we are putting a stronger focus
on law firm-specific solutions
and on achieving rapid growth
in this segment going forward.
Finally, we see further
potential to consolidate the
IP management sector, and
our acquisition strategy is
also closely aligned with the
development of The IP Platform.
We are looking at a range of
acquisitions, especially those
that would enable us to offer
new and additional capabilities
through The IP Platform to our
extensive customer base.
OUR CULTURE
INNOVATION in how we help
our customers identify and
meet their business needs
through the services and
solutions we provide.
COLLABORATION in how
we work together as a team,
both internally and with our
customers, and how our network
facilitates greater collaboration
amongst the different parties
involved across the IP process.
EMPOWERMENT in how our
solutions and support enable
and empower our customers to
achieve their business objectives,
as well as the responsibility and
trust we place in our own people
to provide excellent service.
OUR GROWTH STRATEGY (CONTINUED)
BUSINESS & STRATEGY REVIEW
At the heart of our growth strategy, as well as our vision for the business, is our culture built around our three guiding principles of innovation, collaboration and empowerment.
WWW.CPAGLOBAL.COM | PAGE 12
BUILDING MOMENTUM
The strong performance and positive momentum that we saw over the course of the year continues into the new financial year, ensuring a bright start to 2016-17 and providing us with a foundation on which to build.
We are confident that we now have the strategy and clarity of purpose to deliver robust growth for the
long term. We are not complacent as some of our competitors are working hard to try to follow our lead.
Nevertheless, we believe that our business approach, market leadership position, and our new technology
solutions are true differentiating factors for CPA Global.
Looking ahead, we are well positioned to take advantage of new opportunities in IP markets around the
world, to withstand competitive challenges, and to consolidate our position as the leading IP management
and technology company.

At CPA Global, we pride ourselves on being a responsible member of the community. This is reflected in our strong commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which has been recognised for the second year running by leading international CSR rating agency EcoVadis. In June 2016, EcoVadis awarded CPA Global ‘Silver Recognition’, which places us in the top 30% of organisations they have evaluated for CSR compliance.
With an increasing number of customers
seeking assurances about their suppliers’ CSR
credentials, the EcoVadis rating provides an
advantage for CPA Global in securing and
maintaining business relationships.
During 2015-16, we made important progress in
our ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental
impact and participated in a wide range of
community support activity around the world,
leading to the launch of the Company’s first global
fund-raising campaign.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
CPA Global is active in numerous community initiatives worldwide – active both in terms of organising and participating in events, as well as the physical challenges undertaken in many cases, from gruelling races to strenuous construction work to rappelling off high-rise buildings.
In September 2016, we launched
our first global fund-raising
campaign – Go the Extra Mile!
– which saw employees around
the world walking, running
and swimming to clock up
miles for charity. The Company
pledged a donation of 50p for
every mile covered and set a
target of 14,980 miles which
is the equivalent to a round
trip between our two largest
offices – Alexandria in the US
and Noida in India. The target
had to be achieved in a month.
The response from employees
was overwhelming and, together,
they smashed through the target,
reaching a total of 20,000 miles.
This resulted in a guaranteed
£10,000 donation to Save the
Children – the charity voted for
by employees as the one they
wished to support. In addition to
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
EcoVadis provides companies with CSR ratings of suppliers and is a trusted
partner for the procurement teams of more than 120 leading multinationals
worldwide including Nestlé, Johnson & Johnson, Heineken, Coca-Cola
Enterprises, Nokia, L’Oréal, Bayer, Alcatel-Lucent, ING Bank,
Air France-KLM, Centrica/ British Gas, BASF, Merck, and Verizon.

the business-committed amount,
local activities by employees
in London and Munich raised a
further £1,874, bringing the total
donated to £11,874.
Our home base is in Jersey,
Channel Islands, where we are
a principal sponsor of Autism
Jersey, providing a combination
of direct financial help and
volunteering assistance across
a range of child and family
support services delivered by the
charity. We also offer a number
of work-experience placements
in collaboration with the Jersey
Employment Trust, a local
charity helping individuals with
physical and mental disabilities
prepare for employment, and
the States of Jersey government,
supporting their Advance to Work
scheme for young people and
Back to Work programme for
the unemployed. In addition, we
sponsor the Jersey netball team
– Team Jets; while the sporting
energies of our own employees
have helped raise funds for
various health and children’s
charities through participation in
events such as the annual Sand
Storm Adventure Race, the Jersey
Marathon, and a ‘swimarathon’.
Colleagues in London stepped
up to sporting challenges and
also stepped back in time in
their community activities.
A 15-strong team participated
in a 5km race around the City of
London to raise money for the
Seeing is Believing charity, while
nostalgia was to the fore when
the office held an 80s-themed
fund-raising day – including best
dressed competition, food sale
and quiz night – on behalf of
Great Ormond Street Hospital
for Children. Coffee mornings
were also organised with the
proceeds going to Macmillan
Cancer Support.
In the US, CPA Global employees
organised and participated in a
number of community initiatives
across the country. Activities in
Alexandria included a Toy Drive,
with employees donating new
toys to the Fire Department for
their charitable giving at local
hospitals and shelters. Colleagues
in Alexandria also joined the
Patent and Trademark Office
Society 5km charity run and 1km
trot, helping boost donations
of graphing paper pads to local
middle schools to support their
pursuit of STEM education.
Schools were also the focus of
Operation Backpack where CPA
Global employees in Alexandria
and Minneapolis donated
backpacks and filled them with
school supplies for children from
underprivileged backgrounds.
Employees in Minneapolis spread
further goodwill by making
hundreds of sandwiches to help
feed the city’s homeless, and
by collecting tabs from the top
of soda cans to raise funds for
Ronald McDonald House which
supports families of seriously ill
children. In addition, they raised
money for the Animal Humane
Society by joining the Walk for
Animals, accompanied by their
four-legged friends.
Highlights of an active
community support programme
in Boise included volunteering for
a Habitat for Humanity project
to build houses for lower-income
families in the area. Employees
worked on the roofing, siding

and final clean-up of two houses.
Meanwhile, supported by many
of her colleagues, Boise project
manager Michela Swarthout went
to great heights to raise funds
for the charity with a sponsored
rappel off a 21-storey building.
Other organisations to benefit
from the efforts of CPA Global
employees in Boise, included the
Women’s and Children’s Alliance
which supports victims of
domestic violence; Box Tops
for Education; the American
Lung Association; Giraffe Laugh
Early Learning Centers; Sleep
in Heavenly Peace; and the
Idaho Foodbank.
The Innography office in Austin
organises two service days a
year where groups of volunteers
go into the community to
work on projects. In May 2016,
40 employees undertook
maintenance work at a local
elementary school including
painting, laying a track outdoors,
and cleaning out brush to create
a library garden. October saw
45 volunteers helping clean up a
popular local park.
The Austin office also provides
volunteers for Meals on Wheels,
with two employees every
Monday helping deliver warm
meals to home-bound people.
In addition, in August, the
Innography team helped out at a
local church which provides free
meals for the needy, handing out
pizza, soup, and drinks to diners.
A number of other causes
have benefited from the Austin
office’s community work over
the past 12-18 months including
the Austin Center of Child
Protection and Austin Children’s
Shelter; SafePlace, which
shelters and supports victims of
domestic and sexual violence;
the local Special Olympics
organisation; and PALS (Pets
Assisting the Lives of Seniors).
The Houston office helped fund
the Greenwood Forest Breakers,
a neighbourhood swimming team
dedicated to teaching children
of all ages how to swim both
competitively and as a life skill.
Colleagues in Southfield donated
school supplies to local education
charities and also contributed to
Toys for Tots. In San Mateo, CPA
Global employees collected and
donated food items to the Second
Harvest Food Bank, one of the
largest food banks in the US.
Our colleagues in India have been
active in supporting ‘Swachh
Bharat Abhiyan’ (the Clean India
Mission), a national government
campaign to clean the streets,
roads and infrastructure of
the country and to improve
hygiene and sanitation. They
have delivered a number
of cleanliness and hygiene
awareness programmes in the
community, while also reinforcing
the message internally through
a highly creative street-play
performance in order to
encourage all employees to
spread the word.
In September 2016, a team from
the Noida office visited a school
for underprivileged children,
spending time with students
and explaining the importance
of cleanliness and hygiene.
They also organised a drawing
competition, asking students
to envisage a cleaner society.
In parallel, a team from the
Gurgaon office went into a slum
area, helping educate adults and

matters, and distributing

Diwali (the Festival of Lights)
is one of the India’s biggest
festivals. Every year, the Noida
office, working in conjunction
with the Social and Development
Research and Action Group
(SADRAG), sets up a stall
selling decorations made by
women from rural India. The sale
proceeds are used by SADRAG
to help promote and improve
basic education, health, and skill
development of women and
children in rural areas.
CPA Global employees in India
also supported an animal
welfare and road safety initiative,
Motopaws, which aims to reduce
the number of stray dogs killed
or injured in road accidents each
year. Employees donated their
old jeans to be used in the
manufacture of reflective collars
for the dogs to make the animals
more visible to motorists at night.
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
CPA Global is committed to reducing our impact on the environment.
As the IP sector moves from
being a heavily paper-based
industry to become more
electronically-focused, CPA
Global is playing an important role
as an enabler of such change. We
continue to increase investment
in technology to reduce the use
of paper, both by the Company
and by our customers. More
customers now receive their
documents electronically, and we
proactively look to migrate our
customers to email, saving tens
of thousands of pieces of paper
every month. We are making
further investments in document-
handling and workflow tools
which replace paper processes.
These initiatives also help our
customers increase efficiencies,
reduce costs, and meet their own
CSR objectives.
Recycling and energy
consumption reduction are a key
focus for CPA Global. Recycling
bins are provided in office spaces
and kitchen areas across the
Group and, where we move into
new premises or refurbish offices,
the need for recycling and
energy consumption reduction is
included in all our specifications.
Light bulbs are generally low
energy when we replace them
and a number of other initiatives
are undertaken locally by our
various offices around the world.
We continue to control the re-
use and extended-life use of our
end-user IT equipment as part
of our overall Asset Lifecycle
Management framework.
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Employees in India visited slum areas to help educate residents on health
and sanitation.
WWW.CPAGLOBAL.COM | PAGE 32
This ensures that we minimise IT
equipment disposal, as well as
driving better value and reduced
IT spend, while not compromising
on performance and efficiency.
We are also committed to
minimising inter-office travel
where possible, in particular by
making better use of technology.
In recent months, we have
invested in new technology
to enhance our telephony
systems and video conferencing
capabilities which will help us to
further reduce our air miles.
GOVERNANCE AND BUSINESS CONDUCT
We have a dedicated, independent compliance team which comprises a Chief Compliance Officer and three Regulatory Compliance Officers (RCOs), covering operations in our primary regions of UK & Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. In line with best practices in corporate governance, the compliance team is independent of business operations to ensure more effective checks and balances.
The team oversees a Code of
Business Ethics and Corporate
Conduct that applies to all of
the Company’s directors, officers
and employees, contractors,
temporary staff, and consultants.
The Code underlines our ongoing
commitment to upholding the
highest levels of ethics and
personal integrity in all our
global business dealings, and
is actively promoted through
a comprehensive training and
certification programme for
employees. Currently, some 94%
of employees obtain Business
Ethics certification within 60
days of hire.
The team also has oversight of
our Regulatory Trade Compliance
policy and programme
which is designed to ensure
compliance with bribery and
corruption laws, export control,
economic sanctions, boycott
laws/regulations, data privacy
protection, and Company policy
anywhere in the world. Proactive
measures include restricted-party
screening, expense monitoring, IP
agent anti-bribery training, third-
party due diligence activities,
and a Whistleblowing Policy with
established procedures to report
actual or suspected incidents of
corporate misconduct, including
an independent hotline. During
2015-16, the Compliance team
developed and delivered online
Anti-Bribery and Corruption
training for more than 80 of
CPA Global’s preferred IP agents
around the world. In addition,
the team produced 250 third-
party, anti-bribery due diligence
reports, both for the Company
and on behalf of clients.
Our UK-based RCO (a Certified
Data Protection Practitioner)
also serves in a global role of
Data Privacy Officer, working
closely with local management
teams to ensure we meet our
data privacy obligations.
To ensure risk management is
effectively embedded within
the organisation, we have a
dedicated Risk Manager,
as well as a number of
regional Risk Champions,
who lead our risk management
activities across functions and
geographies, including the
implementation of training
programmes for employees.
