CESL
The mission of the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL)
at the University of Kentucky is to provide comprehensive English
language instruction for non-native English speakers in a university
setting. At the Center for ESL, we assist students in achieving
language proficiency goals for academic, professional, and social
purposes through multi-level language instruction. The Center forESL is dedicated to promoting diversity and to providing reciprocal
cultural enrichment opportunities to the University, the
community, and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Farewell, Cohort 3
The University of Kentucky bids farewell to the Cohort 3
scholars of the Go Teacher Ecuador Project. This special issue
of the newsletter commemorates the accomplishments and
experiences of Cohort 3 during their tenure at the University
of Kentucky. We wish you all the best of luck!
Congratulations!

As we come to the close of what has been a grueling summer, I would like to take a
moment to say thank you to my colleagues: Dr. Whitney Sarver, Ms. Nicole Miller-Beckman,
and Ms. Sarah Warfield. Without the three of you, the summer would have well and truly
been a chore. I would also like to say thank you to our wonderful students from Ecuador.
What can I write that I have not already said in person? It was wonderful to face your
smiling faces every morning and you made it a joy to be a teacher. As I have said, I was
humbled by your steadfastness and your desire to learn. No matter the task, you faced it
with a aplomb and only a minimum of whining! I will never forget your collegiality and theways in which you cooperated, day after day, week after week. I wish you all the very best
and would be honored to watch you in practice as English teachers in Ecuador. Your
students are blessed to have you as instructors, mentors and guides.
Dr. Ted Way, Lecturer
When we look at the blue sky, we
will always remember Lexington,
and the University of Kentucky,
which opened up a big blue worldfor us. Our hearts and minds will be
forever blue, and we will be forever
wildcats.
Mariana Diaz
All of my life I wanted to learn in a country
where English was spoken. One day the
dream became real and I had the
opportunity to be here.- Susana Auquilla
Education is not just studying, it is also
growing personally.- Ines Vargas

It is amazing how time has flown, and now I am here so excited
because I will see my family too soon, and so sad because I have to
go far away from Lexington and from UK University where for seven
months I felt at home and where my dream as a teenager came true.
Here I have had the opportunity to meet wonderful Ecuadorian
colleagues, and marvelous American people that now are my friends. My time in class was really amazing and challenging; I could use all
my English Skills and polish them by all kinds of strategies and
activities my dear teachers used in every lesson. All my teachers are
now a rich source of inspiration for both my personal and
professional life, and they can take it for granted that everything they
shared in class I will try to use with my students in Ecuador. Also, I
want to express my appreciation to the directors and all staff of the
CELS department of the UK University, responsible for Go Teacherprogram for their permanent support.
THANKS SO MUCH, AND GOD BLESS YOU FOREVER
Lucia Arzaga Ortega
I think that I have grown up a lot here as a
person. I will share these different cultures with
my students in Ecuador.
Mariana Daz
You are going to grow emotionally because
you are living in a new culture. We are notjust learning English, we are learning a new
lifestyle and culture. We will transmit these
things to our students.
