Illinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100 undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 ac-ademic departments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing
and Theatre Arts. The 2004 edition of The Fiske Guide to Colleges lists the University as one of its 22 “best buys” among the nation’s private colleges, describing Illinois Wesleyan as “at once cozy and diverse, loaded with opportunities for ambitious students.” Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central feature of every student’s education, IWU also provides op-portunities for professional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratio of 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants in their education, often working individu-ally with faculty members on research. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrant campus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complement the primary academic mission. About 30 percent of each graduat-ing class goes on to graduate school, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools, and in other advanced degree programs. New Facilities: The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a place where books, journals and other materials of intellect and culture are complemented by exciting computer and information technology, opened in 2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym has resulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet the social, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’s attractive and well-maintained 73-acre campus saw approximately $51 million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center for Athletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learning and Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a residence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apartments (1997). The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 million gift from the Russell and Betty Shirk Foundation of Bloomington. The Shirk family owns Beer Nuts, Inc.®, the Bloomington-based snack food company. The two-level, 135,344-square foot complex seats 2,680 in its performance arena, and contains four multi-use courts for ten-nis, volleyball, basketball, as well as racquetball courts, a 200-meter track, a training room and wellness center, classrooms, and other facilities. In 1999 the Jack Horenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in 2000 for new softball and soccer fields. The science center has 15 technologically-equipped classrooms, lecture
halls, and seminar rooms; 18 teaching labs; 27 research labs; and facilities for computers. The Center for Liberal Arts houses 60 faculty offices, classrooms, and facilities for social science, humanities, business and economics. Distinguished Speakers: In the past few years, IWU has hosted a number of outstanding speakers, including former U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen, authors Maya Angelou and Kurt Vonnegut, and film directors Kevin Smith and Spike Lee. Accomplished Alums. Illinois Wesleyan alumni of distinction include Edward B. Rust, Jr., ’72, president and chief executive officer of Bloomington-based State Farm Insurance; Jack Sikma ‘77, seven-time NBA All-Star and current assistant coach for the Houston Rockets; Dawn Upshaw ’82, a two-time Grammy-award winning singer with the New York Metropolitan Opera; Frankie Faison ’71, who has appeared in the films “Silence of the Lambs”, “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “Coming to Ameri a”; Akito Mizuno ’74, senior managing director of Mizuno, the world’s largest sporting goods company; Steve Vogel ’68, author of the best-selling true crime book “Reasonable Doubt”; and Richard Jenkins ’69, who was nomi-nated for an Academy Award for his starring role in the 2008 movie “The Visitor.”

RICHARD F. WILSON,PRESIDENTRichard F. Wilson became the 18th pres-ident at Illinois Wesleyan in July 2004. Since 1978 Wilson has served in a number of roles at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, most re-cently (since 1996) as Vice President of
the U. of Illinois Foundation. He was responsible for all private leading campus efforts to achieve its $1 billion goal as part of its comprehensive campaign. From 1986 to 1994, Wilson was Associate Chancel-
lor, leading effortrs to incorporate computing technologies into instruction and providing oversight of intercollegiate athletics. In 1994, he became Associate Chancellor for Development and Deputy Director of the University of Illinois Foundation. Since 1981, Wilson held and adjunct teaching position in the College of Education, most recently as Adjunct Professor of Higher Education. Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Alderson-Broaddus College (W.Va.). He then pursued advanced degrees from the University of Michigan, earning both master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education. Wilson and his wife, Pat, have two children, Adam and Rachel.
David Barrett has been the women’s soccer coach at Illinois Wesleyan since April 2000 and has been the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women’s soccer “Coach of the Year” three times (2008, 2003 and 2002). Since starting at IWU, Barrett has coached three NCAA Division III All-Americans (including first team keeper Alli Novak and second team forward Emily Hinchman in 2010
and 2011), one Academic All-American, 21 all-Central region selections, and 57 Titans have earned all-conference honors. Barrett’s women’s teams have compiled a 10-year overall record of 145-53-25 (.706 winning percentage) with a conference-only mark of 52-18-7 (.72 percent). His 100th career win came in a 1-0 win vs. Wis.-Whitewater on Sept. 10, 2009.
Barrett has also led IWU women’s soccer teams on international exhibition trips in 2005 (Italy), 2008 (Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic) and 2011 (England). In 2011 the team finished 14-4-2, beat Elmhurst in the CCIW Semifinals, 2-1, before tying Wheaton, 2-2, and then losing in a shoot out in the final game. IWU lost to Ithaca in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championships, 2-1. Also in 2011, Barrett was the head coach of the Present Region II Olympic Development Program where he evaluated, selected, and trained players for Regional teams. The 2010 team finished 17-2-3, won its first 15 games, was unbeaten in its first 16 games (15-0-1) and ranked as high as No. 3 for two weeks in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll. The Titans advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament for the second straight season and the 17 wins set a school single season record. The 2009 team was undefeated in its first sixteen games (14-0-2), won 13 in a row during that stretch and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the National Soccer Coaches Association Division III poll. IWU also earned its first NCAA Division III playoff win (in overtime vs. Carroll). In 2008, the Titans won the school’s first-ever outright College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship in women’s soccer, and advanced in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time in school history. In 2006, Barrett served as a Present National Soccer Coaches Association of America Central Regional Ranking Committee Chairperson. He also became a member of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Regional Advisory Committee, where he held a position
until 2008. Barrett’s 2005 team became the first IWU soccer team (either gender) to be selected to play in the NCAA Division III tour-nament. The 2006 Titans were ranked as high as No. 24 in the National Soccer Coaches Association Division III poll. Also in ’05, Barrett was a staff coach for the Present Illinois Olympic Development Program and began as a National Rankings Committee Member for the Present National Soccer Coaches Association of America, where he still serves. In 2003, Barrett founded and co-directed the Present Advanced Girls Soccer Academy in Bloomington, Ill., where he lead camp strategy and marketing efforts. The 2002 Titans were the CCIW tourney runners-up and were ranked No. 9 in the final Central Region poll. The 2004 team earned national votes midseason and played in the inaugural Midwest Association of Athletic Conferences postseason tourna-ment. For four seasons (2000-04), Barrett coached both the men’s and women’s teams at IWU, relinquishing the men’s job after the 2004 campaign. His four-year men’s overall record was 25-43-5 (.377) with a league mark of 6-17-2 (.280). From 1997-2000, Barrett was an assistant men’s coach at Yale and, in those four seasons, the teams were a combined 43-23-4. In 1999 the Bulldogs reached the NCAA round of 16 and were No. 18 in the final national poll. Barrett was the head soccer coach for the Connecticut Olympic Development Program from 1997-98, working with 25 boys in the under-14 and under-15 age group. Barrett was head boys’ soccer coach at Suffield Academy (Conn.) from 1995-97 and head coach of boys’ soccer at Bridgton Academy (Maine) in 1994-95. David and his wife, Kelly, reside in Bloomington and are the par-ents of a son, Sam (born Oct. 9, 2007), and two daughters, Riley (born Feb. 12, 2010) and Harper (born in 2012).
