From the Pastors Desk March Madness
The week before I left to go to Russia, all four of the NCAA Division 1 mens basketball teams lostwithin days of each other! There have been many exciting twists and turns in the basketball season as it nearsthe end of the regular season. It was also exciting to see WVU take care of Notre Dame recently! Koreen, Alli-son, Thomas, Bobby and I have been able to catch some local college action at Rex Pyles Arena as well. I amfinding that that several of us like to support our A-B Battlers. It is great to see familiar faces as we enter the
coliseum for an event. Maybe it comes from being from a small town where each sporting event became oneof the most happening things for the week, but I love to go and cheer on the athletes who I am there to support. There is a madness that seems to sweep through the ranks of those like to watch a good basketball game. The game transforms into a many layered composition between the teams, coaches, referees, and fans. Eachgroup has its part to play in the orchestration of the game.
The event of life following Jesus should produce a similar type of excitement! This past month hasbeen a series of highlights for our community of faith as well. As we hosted a chance to watch The BigGame in professional football on the first Sunday of February, almost 40 folks gathered to have fellowshiptogether. We also sponsored a family game night at the end of January that was well attended. We have several
new families coming and it is awesome to hear their comments of what they have been experiencing here atPhilippi Baptist! They have been saying how wonderful the people are. You continue to open your arms to ourcollege students as they come to worship with us. One of our college students sent me a Facebook messagethat said she was so thankful for Philippi Baptist and the connection to God she has experienced while attend-ing here! We have started two new Sunday School Classes to provide opportunities of connecting to ouryoung families and the other class for college students. At the same time I had another newcomer attend one ofour long standing Sunday School classes and also expressed her appreciation of the depth of discussion and forthe class to accept her as a participant.
I hope each of you realizes how important you are in the Kingdom of God. Your love and acceptance
of others as they take a chance and check us out is one of the greatest things that makes God smile! When El-sie Frye greets you with her warm smile and friendly hand shake, when Lisa Dadisman answers the churchphone with a pleasant word, when Jud Bracey invites as all to connect with God through music, when each ofyou shares Gods love with each other, I know that all is right with the world! Lets be a part of a March Mad-ness that enters us into a Season of preparation as we participate in the Passion of Christ for all his children.
Shalom,
Pastor Jon

Meet Gary Flowers Price
Imagine beginning to work at the age of sixteen and
staying on the same job your whole life. Thats whatGary Price has done. While he was still in school, hebecame a flower man by working in the greenhouse atThornhills. He stayed on after graduating from Phi-lippi High School, went to floral design schools inWheeling and Cleveland and Dayton, and thats whathe has done ever sinceat Thornhills. Credit himwith the lovely arrangements that appear in our churchevery Sunday.
Gary is a life-long Philippian, born in the old MyersHospital and attending local public schools. He re-members his favorite teachersLillian Crislip in firstgrade and Jane Mattaliano in high school. Hes the oldest of four siblings, his brother Rick now being minister of the Southern Baptist church in Saberton, his sister Kim an in-home patient caregiver inElkins, and his brother Joe still living here in Philippi. Their father was a coal miner, theirmother, Martha, a homemaker who later worked at Broaddus Hospital.
Gary and his wife, Brenda, who has worked at Broaddus Hospital for over fifteen years, heada blended family of five children and seven grandchildren scattered from Elkins, Clarksburg, and Grafton, to Pittsburgh and beyond. He grins as he reports that the Brenda-Gary relation-ship as more than friendly neighbors began when he invited her to go for a walk with him.Our first date, he says, was on the 4 th of Julywe went to see the fireworks at the fair-grounds. Everyone who knows them agreesGary made a good investment.
Im a third-generation Baptistat least, he nods. Im not sure about my great-grandparents, but grandparents and parents? Baptist all the way. He lives his commitmhaving served PBC as a Sunday School teacher and now superintendent. He has also been a
member of the Diaconate and the Worship Committee and the Board of Church Growth. And probably a few others, he smiles. I grew up in this church and was baptized by DickHepler when I was 18. I cant imagine ever not being a part of this congregation. Its my etended family, with me every time I have ever needed anything. As for the futureI justpray, Gary says, that we continue to grow, particularly in terms of children and young cou-ples. This church means everything to me.
