EPA letter, Feb. 18, 2009, CISD-09-04 (HDDE)
• Issue – how to keep an SCR technology vehicle in emission compliance caused by:
– Low fluid level or no fluid– Poor quality fluid – Intentional disregard of system warnings
• Driver warning strategy to minimize the likelihood of inducements:
– DEF level indicator– Instrument cluster message– DEF indicator– Engine shutdown lamp– Audible warnings
9
• Issue – how to keep an SCR technology vehicle in emission compliance caused by:
– Low fluid level or no fluid– Poor quality fluid – Intentional disregard of system warnings
• Driver inducement for rectification:– Engine derate:
• After 500 miles or 10 hours– Torque reduction of 25%
– Severe inducement:• After 1000 miles or 20 hours – 5 mph maximum speed
– Disable after Fueling – Detects fuel level rise– Disable after Parking – Stationary for one hour– Disable after Restart – Key off, Key on

EPA letter, Feb. 18, 2009, CISD-09-04 (HDDE)
• Tamper Resistant Design required:
– Warning system and derate strategy will activate for:
• Disconnected DEF tank level sensor• Blocked DEF line or dosing valve• Disconnected DEF dosing valve• Disconnected DEF pump• Disconnected SCR wiring harness• Disconnected NOx sensor• Disconnected DEF quality sensor

EPA letter, Feb. 18, 2009, CISD-09-04 (HDDE)
• Frozen DEF exception – vehicle performance requirement:
– Thaw of tank must be complete and system operational at end of 70 minute test requirement:
• DEF at 200 F• Cold soak at 00 F for 72 hours or solid DEF occurs• Start vehicle at 00 F• Idle with no load for 20 minutes• Operate at maximum of 40% load factor at rated speed for 50 minutes
• Summary:– The EPA allows flexibility for the manufacturers.

• The Temperature Control Device (TCD) is a heat mitigation device that reduces exiting exhaust gas temperature. The TCD works on a venturi principal and mixes the exhaust gasses with external air to reduce the overall exit temperature. The TCD is standard on all horizontal exit ATD systems.

Electronic Stability ProgramElectronic Stability Program (ESP) – ESP helps in both rollover
and loss of control situations through advanced monitoring of a variety of vehicle parameters and automatic and selective application of vehicle brakes. ESP, through its roll stability program helps to mitigate rollovers through advanced sensing and automatic application of vehicle brakes.
Bendix® Smart ATC™ – Unlike other traction control products, the Bendix® Smart ATC™ traction control system makes adjustments based on the vehicle orientation (straight vs. curve),speed and the driver’s throttle input.
Core ABS – Prevents wheel lock-up to help drivers maintain steering control while braking. Compliance with FMVSS 121 for air brake systems.
Diagnostics – Bendix ESP offers a suite of diagnostic tools to keep your vehicles on the road. From traditional blink codes and “Chuff” test at vehicle start, to a portable remote diagnostic unit (RDU) and Bendix® ACom™, our comprehensive, computer based diagnostic software.
Serviceability – Because Bendix® ESP® is an ABS-based system, most of the components are the same familiar parts used on your current ABS and ATC system. The additional stability system components are based on proven technology and require only simple direct part replacement.
• What is roll stability?– Roll stability counteracts the tendency of a vehicle, or vehicle
combination, to tip over while changing direction (typically while turning). The lateral (side) acceleration creates a force at the center of gravity (CG), “pushing” the vehicle horizontally. The friction between the tires and the road opposes that force.
– If the lateral force is high enough, one side of the vehicle may begin to lift off the ground potentially causing the vehicle to roll over.
– Factors influencing the sensitivity of a vehicle to lateral forces include: the load CG height, load offset, road adhesion, suspension stiffness, frame stiffness and track width of vehicle.
• What is yaw stability?– Yaw stability counteracts the tendency of a vehicle to spin about its vertical axis.
During operation, if the friction between the road surface and the vehicle tires is not sufficient to oppose lateral (side) forces, one or more of the tires can slide, causing the truck/tractor to spin. These events are referred to either as an “under-steer” situation (where there is a lack of vehicle response to steering input due to tire slide on the steer axle) or an “over-steer” situation (where the tractor’s rear end slides out due to tire slide on the rear axle).
– Generally, shorter wheelbase vehicles (tractors, for instance) have less natural yaw stability, while longer wheelbase vehicles (e.g. straight trucks)have greater natural yaw stability. Factors that influence yaw stability are: wheelbase, suspension, steering geometry, weight distribution front to rear, and vehicle tracking.
