Gil Kohn recounts, “I’m not sure if it was the first match race we held at the Dragway, but if it wasn’t, it certainly was one of the first. It was about the beginning of the match rac-ing phenomena. Phenomenally successful. Word soon got out. Nicholson, of course, was a national star, having won the Pomona Nationals. I was out there, and he was a very, very big star—big in California and across the country. He came into Detroit early for some publicity, and he was really first-class, professional. The press just ate him up alive—very well spoken, a real pro. The Ramchargers were local. There was tre-mendous interest in them and their Dodge. We were always looking for new stars, and they really fit the bill. I don’t know if we made them stars or they helped us more, but it was a mutually beneficial relation-ship. There was just tremendous interest in Detroit in seeing them race.”
Then, 15-year-old Dave Rockwell provided a spectator’s experience of the race. “I went with some buddies and ended up parking about 2 miles from the track on the roadside because the track parking lot was full and the road had become a parking lot. It was a gorgeous spring day, so the walk didn’t bother us. The size of the crowd was amaz-ing. It seemed about like the Nationals two years before, 10 deep at the fence, and the

“Woody” car, built to his specifications, from Woody himself.
Arriving just before Christmas, the car was beautiful. It was built on a long 150-inch wheelbase, incorporating Woody’s latest “trick car” features such as a system of bars and screw adjustments located aft of the engine. Tightening the screw jacks’ pre-set load into the all-chrome moly flexible frame stiffened it. By loosening the screws, the frame flexibility increased. This per-mitted the chassis to be set up for varying track conditions.
The front suspension was provided by Woody’s latest torsion bar design. The chrome steering links culminated in a wafer-thin cast magnesium steering butterfly. An aluminum motor plate supported a bell housing, blast shield, and direct drive unit from Donovan Engineering that fed power to a chrome, 32-inch-wide, 3.23 open Olds rear end. A Schiefer aluminum flywheel and two disc clutches regulated the power. A mag-nesium “plum guard” tied the rear axle to the frame. Twin master cylinders provided primary and backup braking protection by pressurizing Airheart “200-mph special” spot disc brakes, after a Deist ribbon parachute absorbed the first 100 mph. the way out. The whole ritual probably took five or ten minutes, depending on the track. Then we always carried a squirt oil can con-verted for priming the fuel injection stacks with fuel because the injectors had no pump shot.
“So after the national anthem, it was just a matter of priming each injector tube and Jim hitting the switch, and the car was ready to go. Then we had gallon bleach bottles that we filled with acetone, from which we then poured a decent puddle in front of each slick, followed by the high sign to Jim for the burnout. He then would spin through the acetone, or ‘glue’ as we called it, and then burn through the powdered rosin. After the first burn through, the rosin could be blowing around pretty well, and his tracks would be

We also discuss the concepts of generalized coordinates, the principle of virtual work, constraints, and D’Alembert’s principle. In Section 1.10, the equations of motion for a dynamic system have been derived based on Lagrange’s formulation. Lagrange’s equa-tions of motion consist of a system of simultaneous second-order differential equations, which generally are nonlinear in the generalized coordinates and the corresponding velocities.
1.2 Vehicle System Classification
Transportation can be considered as a means of conveyance from one point or place to another. There are many different kinds of transportation vehicles. These vehicles are based on different principles, they travel at different speeds, and they operate in diversified environments. In general, vehicles can be classified by their support and propulsion principles. The purpose of propulsion is to generate the forward speed, while the support mechanism balances the gravity acting on the vehicles, as shown schematically in Figure 1.1. Figure 1.2 shows the classification of vehicles based on support and propulsion principles. The reaction forces generated by the wheels, air cushions, or magnets support ground vehicles. Friction, flow, or magnetic forces drive all of these vehicles.

Static or dynamic lift forces generated by water or air support fluid vehicles, and flow forces generally propel them. Dynamic lift or inertia forces generated by air, jet pro-pulsion, or orbital motion support inertia vehicles, and inertia forces accelerate them. Due to the nature of support and propulsion principles, quite a variation of maximum traveling speeds can be attained by these three classes of vehicles. Ground vehicles can attain a maximum speed of 600 km/h (375 mph). Fluid vehicles can attain up to 3000 km/h (865 mph), and inertia vehicles may have a traveling speed of 50,000 km/h (31,000 mph). The study of the dynamics of vehicles other than nonguided road vehicles is beyond the scope of this book.

If we consider the equivalence values for the mass, stiffness, and damping of the system, a single-degree-of-freedom model of the automobile can be constructed as shown in Figure E1.3(b). In Figure E1.3(b), the equivalent stiffness (keq) includes the stiffness of the front and rear wheels, and the stiffness of the front and rear suspension. The equivalent damping constant (ce) includes the damping of the front and rear wheels, and the damping of the front and rear suspension. The equivalent mass (meq) includes the mass of the automobile body and the mass of the passengers (mp). This model is further refined by considering the mass of the wheels (mw), the stiffness and damping of the tires (kt and ct), and the stiffness and damping of the front and rear suspension (ks and cs) as shown in Figures E1.3(c), (d), and (e). In Figure E1.3(e), the damping of the tires (kt and ct) and the stiffness and damping of the front and rear suspension of the automobile are assumed be the same for all the wheels and the front and rear suspensions.
