Title“Many were aware of the problems of the environment years before it became a popular crusade of the now conscious public. It makes us proud that we were one of those who recognized the need for improvement - and took action. We plan to continue, in our own small way, to help make our communities a better place to work and live.”

Kimball Office…Evidence Based Design

1. Making sense of the world around us.

2. Speed and complexity of information.

3. Task switching.

Moving Forward in Surprising Ways

Cognitive Ergonomics?

• Changing nature of work • Cognitive science has expanded insights• Environments must support thought & action• The move from optimality to Super-optimality

Super-optimality principle: If performance is already optimized, the ONLY way of increasing yields is to change the task environment.

The Case for Cognitive Ergonomics in Offices

Moving Forward in Surprising Ways

Moving Forward in Surprising Ways

What is necessary now?

1. Organize the mind

2. From one to many

3. Make signals visible

4. Minds at work.

Moving Forward in Surprising Ways

What is necessary now?

• Grouping of information.

• Information is easy to see, easy to reach and easy to find.

• Worksurfaces layered in space and time.

• Work materials organized into what is needed now, soon and later.

• Space arranged for both physical and mental convenience.

Moving Forward in Surprising Ways

Organize the Mind

• Furniture can set up interactions

• Ideas flow from the mind of individuals and are shared socially

• Environment supports focused attention and open collaboration

• Work environment should be able to filter and minimize distractions and also be open enough to meet others without distraction

Moving Forward in Surprising Ways

From One to Many

• Required multi-tasking requires different states of mind

• The environment helps develop a greater awareness of those around us

• The more people are aware, the better they are able to contribute

Moving Forward in Surprising Ways

Make Signals Visible

• The office is the where people gather to perform work.

• The office should encourage good behaviors such as creativity and collaboration.

• Better interactions in flexible and responsive environments.

• Workspace design clearly embodies and supports the effectiveness of minds.

Kimball Office…Customer First Attitude

Challenge Flexibility, Style, and Strength WXIX wanted a lively, creative workspace for reporters and producers. News crews need to concentrate on the task at hand, and quickly switch gears to chat with each other, without the downtime of scheduling a meeting in a conference room.

WXIX needed: A sturdy open desking system with space for multiple computers and monitors. Mobile storage units for personal items, with an overall structure that could be shared by multiple shifts of people. A creative, engaging, collaborative environment, adjacent to the news studio, worthy to be seen "on air".

Solution Breaking News Means No Time for Formal Meetings Producers can make swift progress on breaking news, because Hum encourages impromptu conversations without moving away from computer and TV monitors.

"These guys have to stay in touch with each other in order to make the deadline. They don't have the time to move to a conference room; they have to do it on the fly," says Bill Lanesey, General Manager. "Hum allows our employees and our content generators to interact with each other on a timely basis."

Furnishings include: Hum. Minds at Work. desks and storage Footprint components Approach seating

Results Hum is Ready for a Close-Up In the fast-paced world of television news, furniture shouldn't slow you down. Hum enables the news, weather, and sports teams at WXIX to always be ready...one minute working together and the next concentrating on individual tasks.

As Steve Ackermann, Fox 19 News Director puts it, "This is a workspace we have to be able to show on high density television. We've been very impressed with how Hum looks on TV and how it improves our workflow."

Challenge Find the Perfect Solution IA Interior Architects (IA) was interested in using an open benching concept to achieve the goals they had set for their new workspace.

The furniture would have to: Impart a clean, simple aesthetic Be customizable and reconfigurable Reflect the corporate culture Promote a collaborative environment Accommodate large printouts

Solution Working Smarter Hum's key focus on cognitive ergonomics eliminated weaknesses that existed in some of the other benching systems on the market. IA concluded that Hum addressed their needs, by taking into account how people work. Hum could be tailored to meet all of their functional and aesthetic requirements.

Furniture used: Hum. Minds at Work. Footprint worksurfaces and storage

Results Mentoring Collaboration Since workplace strategy is their business, IA inherently understood the benefits of the open, collaborative Hum environment. "Hum really has helped with mentoring, with information sharing," says Kay Sargent, Principal, IA Interior Architects. "It's really changed some of our habits. It seems to meet the needs of all of the staff very, very well."

Challenge Modern Conservative D.H. Griffin wanted a clean, fresh design with wood furniture that would: Stand the test of time Express a conservative culture Provide daylight and views Support impromptu meetings Provide finish continuity Celebrate the beauty of wood

Solution A Myriad of Solutions Kimball Office supplied its full breadth of product to furnish all of D.H. Griffin's facility areas, including open plan, private offices, conference, work, and mail rooms, and administrative and lounge areas.

Furnishings include: Innsbruck desks and storage Transcend desks and storage Xsite panel system Conference Solutions tables Clairmont and Stature seating Arpeggio and Beo side seating

Results Lasting Value "The Kimball Office people understood what we were looking for," said David H. Griffin, Jr., Vice President of D.H. Griffin Companies. "They listened to us and really walked us through the process; held our hand. We are really happy with the end result."
