The famed race is just days away. On April 18, nearly 30,000 runners will toe the line in Hopkinton for the 120th running of the Boston Marathon. Inspired by the first modern Olympics in 1896 in Greece, Boston is the oldest annual marathon.
Take the next few days to relax, hydrate, and fuel properly.
1. Your carb loading should start today. Contrary to what most people think, you don’t need to eat boatloads of pasta and rolls for weeks before your marathon. You really only need to increase your carbohydrate intake three to five days before race day, and only in healthy amounts. The idea behind loading is to top off your glycogen stores, which hold about 2,000 calories worth of carbs, so you’re fully loaded Monday morning.
For example, add a dinner roll to your lunch soup or salad, and a handful of pretzels for an afternoon snack, instead of a heaping bowl of pasta for lunch and dinner.
On Saturday and Sunday, have a bagel or an English muffin with peanut butter for breakfast. For lunch, have a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread with lettuce, tomato, avocado and mustard.
Good snacks include pretzels (the extra salt will help top off your electrolytes), a banana with peanut butter or a handful of almonds.
Your dinners on Saturday and Sunday should be moderate portions of carbs like white pasta (whole wheat is high in fiber, which may have you racing to the porta potty), potatoes or rice. Have a roll or two with olive oil— the oil’s healthy fat will help you
feel full.
On race morning, have a decent breakfast when you wake up, and then have a snack or two an hour before the start. Don’t try anything new on race morning. If your go-to breakfast before a race or long run is a bowl of oatmeal, eat that. If your body is used to a plate of eggs, bacon and potatoes, don’t change it.
An hour or so before the start, top off one more time with a few sips of sports drink like Gatorade, a banana, or a small granola bar or energy gel.
2. Sleep is important over the next few nights. It may not find you Sunday night, but studies have shown that doesn’t seem to affect performance. When it comes to catching ZZs, two nights before the race seems to be more important.
If you can’t sleep Sunday night, try meditating, listening to calm music or reading—the May issue of Runner’s World is now on stands. Try not to stress about not sleeping or the 26.2 miles ahead. Easier said than done.
3. Try to stay off your feet over the weekend. The Boston Marathon expo is exciting, and people want to visit every booth, but that means a lot of
time walking around. When you pick up your number, give yourself a certain amount of time (30 minutes to an hour) to browse the booths. Chances are, you’ll be doing more walking around the city, which adds unwanted mileage.
4. Don’t try anything new. In addition to not changing up your diet in the days before (and on) race day, don’t wear new shoes, new socks or new running gear. You’ve trained with certain items, and your body is used to those. Introducing anything new could lead to trouble once the race gets going.
5. Relax and enjoy. You’re about to run the Boston Marathon, following the footsteps of marathon greats like Johnny “Older” Kelley,
Johnny “Younger” Kelley, Tarzan Brown, Clarence DeMar, Kathrine Switzer, Roberta Gibb, Billy Rodgers, Amby Burfoot, Shalane Flanagan, Desi Linden, Ryan Hall and Meb Keflezighi.
Don’t go out too fast, soak up the scene, listen to the crowds, grit your way up and over Heartbreak Hill, follow the Citgo sign, take a right on Hereford and a left on Boylston, and run your heart out. It’s the greatest race in the world, after all.

Wellesley College prepares to scream for marathon runnersBy JosH PerryHometown Weekly Staff
Every April, Wellesley College students line the
streets outside the school to welcome runners at the halfway point of the Boston Marathon with a reception that few will ever forget.
History says that the Scream Tunnel began in the first year of the marathon in 1897, which was just 22 years after the school was founded. The students, according to the Wellesley College website, cheered on a Harvard student that was a favorite and the tradition has stuck and evolved into a cacophony of noise and signs that urges runners to continue for the final 13 miles.
The Scream Tunnel has been featured in a number of national publications. According to “Runners’ World” magazine, “Thousands of women line about a quarter mile of the course, motivating
runners with hoots, hollers, high-fives... even kisses! The so-called Wellesley Scream Tunnel is so loud, runners say they can hear it from a mile away.” It was also included in ad campaigns from race sponsors like New Balance.
If you would like to get a taste for the Scream Tunnel, search for it on YouTube to see videos of what it is like in the maelstrom of Wellesley College students.
According to the school website, “In 2011, students from Munger [Hall] extended the reach of the sign-making tradition by starting @TheScreamTunnel on Twitter
and Scream Tunnel Signs by Wellesley's Munger Hall on Facebook to take custom requests, show off signs created for runners, and interact with runners and other members of the community.”
It added, “Munger faces the marathon race course on Central Street, so it’s only fitting that its residents decided to take responsibility for upping the ante with this tradition.”
Students interested in making signs for the marathon now have to sign-up online in advance and a number of the signs have been posted on Facebook.
It is a noisy tradition that runners look forward too as much as the students. This year, take a stop at the halfway point and get a taste of the Scream Tunnel for yourself.
