Flamenco

The Flamenco is a dance with countless different versions depending on mood and occasion such as death and mourning or marriage and celebration

The Flamenco can be danced with couples or singles but is most commonly a single dancing woman

Danced, slower paced and more elegant with long dramatic sweeping movements of the hands and body

That are sometimes coupled with short powerful stomping motions of the feet that are meant to keep a beat

Origin

The Flamenco originated in the Andalucian region of Spain as a musical outlet for the poor or opressed

Where it then received influence from the… Greek Roman Jewish Moorish Indian

History

The Flamenco first became public in the 19th century along with the café cantante which slowly became more popular over time

Gave rise to the Flamenco Guitar

Traditional Dress

Flamenco Shoes: the only real necessity to the outfit. Must be tight fitting, with a 2 inch heel to make firm stomping noise

Flamenco Skirt: Very long with a large flare and many ruffles. Has a “full” look.

Accessories: Silk Flowers, Fans, Earrings, Castanets, Shawls are sometimes added to personalize a dancers appearance

Occasions

Flamenco was usually danced at Parties Concerts Formal Events Juerga (gatherings with singing and dancing)

(made of different wood, lighter, and smaller, higher pitched)
