Depression1/14 and 1/15

EQ: How do we draw angles of elevation and angles of depression?

3. Find the measure of the missing angle:

Warm Up

Angle of Elevation: the angle from the line of sight and upwards.

Angle of Elevation

Angles of Elevation

Angle of Depression: the angle from the line of sight and downwards.

Angle of Depression

Angles of Depression

1. A 75 angle of depression from a plane to your house

2. A 60 angle of elevation from you to a bird in the sky

3. A 15 angle of depression from the top of a building to the top of the next building over

4. A 20 angle of elevation from you to the top of “The Pearle” (school bus)

Practice drawing some of these…

1. A 75 angle of depression from a plane to your house

2. A 60 angle of elevation from you to a bird in the sky

3. A 15 angle of depression from the top of a building to the top of the next building over

4. A 20 angle of elevation to the top of “The Pearle” (school bus)

Practice: Angles of Elevation1. To measure the height of an inaccessible TV tower, a surveyor

paces out a base line of 200m and measures the angle of elevation to the top of the tower to be 62° . How high is the tower? (The distance from the surveyor’s eyes to the ground is 2m.)

Practice: Angles of Elevation2. A tourist stands 15m back from the base of a statue and looks up

to the top of the statue. If the angle of evaluation is 48°, find the height of the statue. (The distance from the tourists eyes to the ground is 1.5 m)

Practice: Angles of Depression3. An airplane is flying at a height of 2 miles above the ground. The

distance along the ground from the airplane to the airport is 5 miles. What is the angle of depression from the airplane to the airport?

Practice: Angles of Depression4. A bird sits on top of a lamppost. The angle of depression from the

bird to the feet of an observer standing away from the lamppost is 35. The distance from the bird to the observer is 25 meters. How far off the ground is the bird?
