Principal’s Report
Students Signing on for VCE & VCAL
We have had a very positive response to our VCE and
VCAL initiatives for 2020. Pictured above year 10 stu-
dent Shae De Francesco who has signed on with RIST
and Dairy Farmer James Kenna to complete a school
based apprenticeship. We congratulate Shae and
thank James and David Ryan from Apprenticeship
Support Australia for assisting fill in the paperwork
last week. Shae like a number of our students will
participate in work placement during the week, training through serviced providers each week and three
days of school next year. We congratulate all students who will take on this schooling option next year.
Book Week
Well done to everyone who participated in the numerous activities held last week at Mortlake College.
The highlight would have to be the sensationally amazing Dress up Parade on Thursday morning. A larg-
er than expected turn out in costumes was very pleasing to see. Everyone who participated is to be con-
gratulated for the creativity shown. My only disappointment is that how did Fiona & Shrek not win best
dressed couple! A special thanks to all staff members for organising the extra special events.
Upgrade New Technologies
Tomorrow myself and three staff members will be leaving shortly after the rooster crows to attend a
school in Melbourne to see how they have integrated new laptop technology across their school Years 7
– 12. This is the similar technology to what we are exploring at the moment to phase in at Mortlake P-
12 College. After our visit and subsequent reports to Mortlake School council we will be in a position to
release to parents our new plan for technology devices moving forward. We are also at the same time
negotiating the best deals from companies. A number of which will be attending Mortlake College in
the next two weeks. I realise that many parents would like to purchase a new ipad however if you could
please hold off for a little longer.
Wishing all our fathers a Happy Fathers’ Day for this Sunday 1st September.

Job Spotlight – Civil Engineering
Civil Engineers and Drafts people help create the spaces where people live, move, and work. They design,
build, operate and maintain all sorts of structures, including roads, ports, railways, mines, dams, structures
and more.
What type of person would this job suit?
You need to be creative, with an eye for design and strong attention to detail
Strong maths skills, and a love of making things line up
You should be self-reliant, and able to manage multiple projects at once
Good organisational habits
Ability to work well in a team, as engineering projects are always team-based
Industries where you find civil engineers:
Science and Technology
Public Safety and Construction
Aviation and Transport
Environmental Science and Sustainability
Pathways
If you’ve got a passion for any of these industries and you think you’ve got the necessary attributes, then you have some choices. You can choose to head to university and gain a degree, which will make you competitive for profes-sional roles. There are also lots of cadetships and paid internships on offer for engineering students, which could help pay for your degree and provide a salary plus work experience. Alternatively, you can start out at TAFE and gain a Cert III or IV in engineering-related fields, then work and gain experience before deciding if you want to go to uni later on. The Cert III in Manufacturing Technology from TAFE Queensland is a good example of an introductory course that could get you started. You can even study online.
Engineering Draftspersons and Technicians
Most jobs in this field require a Cert III or IV. Draftspersons and Technicians assist Civil Engineers by preparing sketch-
es, taking samples, assisting on site, estimating material costs, inspecting works and organising construction. You will
usually be working alongside and possibly under the supervision of a degree qualified engineer. You could expect to
earn over $80,000 per year at this level, but some online jobs have been noted as offering well over $100,000 for ex-
perienced drafters)
Growth in Civil Engineering industry is strong, and is expected to remain so into the future.
Living on-campus while studying at university in 2020
Students planning to study at university next year need to begin considering where they could possibly be living while this study is going on. Many students opt to live on-campus while they are completing tertiary studies; the advantages of staying in halls of residence usually include close proximity to university, access to campus recreational and study facilities, tutoring opportunities, social networking and inclusive rental and/or board packages. Information about campus accommodation can be obtained from university web-sites or by attending open day activities, which will often include a tour and presentation about residential facilities and options. Universities usually offer a range of scholarships, bursaries and college employment positions to assist rural students with the costs of living and studying in residence – these can amount to many thousands of dollars, and are certainly worth enquiring about and applying for. The selection process for halls of residence usually consists of a combination of personal questionnaire, references, interview and ATAR score.
Youthrive Victoria (formerly Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation) applications
Youthrive Victoria scholarships are designed to assist year 12 students from rural/regional Victoria to partic-ipate in tertiary study in the year following the completion of Year 12. Applications for this scholarship pro-gram opened in June, and will close on August 9. For more information and application forms, please re-fer to the Youthrive Victoria website https://www.youthrivevictoria.org.au/
La Trobe University – Aspire early offer program
Aspire is open to current Year 12 students who have positively contributed to their community, and who wish to take part in an undergraduate course at La Trobe university. Students who can demonstrate a valuable contribution to volunteering with organisations or community groups, in-volvement with local sports groups or leadership roles in community, sports or similar groups can apply for an early conditional offer to La Trobe university, although minimum ATAR and subject pre-requisites will still apply in taking up this offer. Applications for the La Trobe Aspire program open in June, and will close on August 31 of this year.
Find out more at https://www.latrobe.edu.au/study/aspire or have a chat with Mr Ralph about how you can take advantage of this early entry opportunity.
My Future – Supporting your Child’s Career Development Support from family is vital in helping young people through the process of thinking about and planning for their career. It’s really important that parents take the time to have conversations with their adolescent children about what life could look like after secondary school – which could include an apprentice, a train-eeship, deferring a place at university for some gap year work and travel, attending university, TAFE train-ing, seeking full time employment or a combination of part-time work and part-time training.
This webpage from the My Future website provides some practical advice about how parents can provide practical career support for their children in the areas of self-awareness, opportunity awareness, decision making and transition support. Read more at - https://myfuture.edu.au/career-insight/details?id=supporting-your-child-s-career-development - /
University Scholarships If you’re planning to study at university next year, it’s a good idea to start thinking about scholar-ships you might be eligible for. Some scholarships require you to apply the year before you study, while for some you’ll have to wait until you’re enrolled. Debating Opportunity for Years 7/8 & Years 9/10
Participating in debating is a great way to build good, strong public speaking skills, dis-cuss issues and work closely with others in a team to develop a logical, coherent and persuasive argument. For our students, this augers well for success across the curricu-lum.
Mortlake College, along with other schools in the region, has once again been invited to participate in the Warrnambool Regional Debating Competition to be held at Emmanuel College, Ardlie St, Warrnambool.
This will be conducted by the experienced people from the Debaters Association of Victoria. It begins with a Training Day, followed by a Competition Day. Training Day - Thursday 17th October- 12pm-2:30pm. Competition Day - Thursday 31 October - 9:30am-3:00pm What's involved? The program is run over two days. The first is an optional half-day training session for stu-dents who have little or no experience of debating. The training session introduces students to debating and covers topics such as the rules and format of debating Australian 3-on-3 debating, methods of preparation and effective debating strategies. Students are also given a opportunities to practice their skills in the lead-up to the competition day, while receiving expert advice from DAV trainers and adjudicators. The second day is a competition day. Each team will debate in three rounds. We will have a Junior division for Year 7 and 8 and a Senior division for Year 9 and 10.
Over the next few weeks classroom teachers will be speaking with students who may be interested in taking part in this wonderful opportunity.
Any questions, please contact Ms Cakebread or Ms O’Neill at the school.
