Nursing Issues & Resolution
Institutional Research: April 2008
2
Issue: Communication
• Dr. Denise Maguire was introduced to the Sarasota-Manatee Nursing Education Consortium at the June and July meetings.
• Although her teaching schedule did not permit her to attend the Fall 2007 meetings, she has regularly attended meetings this spring.
3
Issue: Course Delivery
• Blended courses are again being offered in the RN to BS program & 3 courses are being taught live at USF S-M or MCC.– Enrollment was higher in web courses.– Only 4 enrolled in live pharmacology.
• Students can mix and match the on-line program with the blended courses if they choose.
4
Issue: Clinical Nurse Leader
• The CNL program is now on hold for new admissions, due to low enrollment.– Hospitals each have a different interpretation of the
role, and many are not employing the CNL.
• Core Courses are being taught face-to-face on the Sarasota-Manatee Campus via video-conference.
5
Issue: Redesign of CNL
• The CON is re-evaluating the CNL curriculum to better meet the needs of partner hospitals. A Task Force has met once. Additional community members are welcome.
• Dr. Maguire was recently appointed as Director of the CNL program.
6
Issue: Nursing Advising
• Mary Poe, College of Nursing, alternates between the USF Sarasota-Manatee Campus and the MCC Bradenton Campus every Tuesday from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm.– She is busy, but the calendar is never completely filled.
• Appointments are scheduled through the USF Sarasota-Manatee Office of Student Services at (941) 359-4330.
• Students scheduling appointments at MCC through USF should call (941)752-5526 to confirm a day before their appointment.

Issue: Joint USF-MCC Admissions
• MCC and USF are working to finalize the process of joint admission.
• The College of Nursing (CON) has made this option available to students, announced at the March Education Consortium meeting.
10
Issue: Tuition Deferment Process
• The hospital representative responsible for tuition approval may contact: – Gabriella Vega, Financial Aid, gvega@sar.usf.edu
at (941)359-4622
• USF requires a list of the nursing students, and a promise from the facility to pay directly to USF in order to receive a deferral.
• Announced at the March Education Consortium.
11
Issue: Needs Assessment
• Survey of 8500 Sarasota and Manatee County RNs by USF Tampa College of Nursing (See summary in appendix).
• Survey of nursing directors by USF Sarasota-Manatee Institutional Research (See summary in appendix).
12
Issue: Recruitment
• The CON has an extensive recruitment plan.
• Prospective nursing students are entered into the USF S-M recruitment database and sent information through Student Services.
• Admission information videos on the web.• USF S-M Info Sessions.• Career fairs & info sessions at hospitals.
– CON turned away from many hospitals due to solicitation policy.
13
Issue: Orientation
• One orientation session for new nursing students is held prior to every semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) on the USF Sarasota-Manatee Campus.– Students who are admitted are notified of the orientation by mail
in their letter of admittance.– Most recent announced in the Feb Education Consortium mtg.
