What is Intrapersonal Communication?

* Communication that occurs in one’s own mind; also called “self-talk”

Perception Process:process you use to assign

meaning to data about

yourself or the world

around you

* There are 3 perceptions…

1. Sensory Perception:Physical process of taking data through

the senses

2. Selective Perceptionmental process of choosing which data/stimuli to focus

on from all that are available to you at a given time

1. Intensity – the more intense

2. Repetition – over & over

3. Uniqueness – new & unusual

4. Relevance – mirror our own interests

3. Personal Perception

1. Values

2. Beliefs

3. Culture

4. Bias

5. Prejudice

6. Attitudes

THINK, PAIR, SHARE

What were the first perceptions displayed by each of the communicators?

perceptions.

Self-Concept:

The view you have of

yourself; formed from your beliefs and attitudes.

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy:A prediction

or expectation of an event that shapes your behavior, making the outcome more likely to occur.

1. The Event (what you want to do)

2. The Behavior (what you do to get it)

3. The Outcome (what was the result)

The Future YOU1. The future you……where do you see yourself

in 10 years. What do you have to do to make sure that happens? (Event, behavior, outcome)

Self-Disclosure:

Personal information that is not readily apparent to others
