Three criteria:

To be highly recognisable symbol of Europe

To have visual link with existing well known currency symbols

To have an aesthetically pleasing design and to be easy to write by hand

Inspired by the Greek letter epsilon First letter of the word “Europe” Two parallel lines indicate the stability of the euro
