David: Shaping a Godly Heart

The Installment Plan2 Samuel 11

Sin carries a high price tag Fred Smith, Sr.,

stated a spiritual truth: “You pay for the

good things you do in advance, but the evil things you do put you on the installment plan.”

Mark 2:1-5 NIV A few days later, when

Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. (2) So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. (3) Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them.

Mark 2:1-5 NIV (4) Since they could not

get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. (5) When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

Isaiah 59:1-2 NIV

Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. (2) But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

Ephesians 2:1-10 NIV As for you, you were dead in your

transgressions and sins, (2) in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. (3) All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

Ephesians 2:1-10 NIV (4) But because of his great love for us,

God, who is rich in mercy, (5) made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. (6) And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, (7) in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:1-10 NIV

(8) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- (9) not by works, so that no one can boast. (10) For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Forgiveness is no easy matter. It takes blood for cleansing.

Matthew 26:28 NIV This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Forgiveness is no easy matter. It takes blood for cleansing.

1 John 1:7 NIV But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Forgiveness is no easy matter. It takes blood for cleansing.

Revelation 1:5 NIV … To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood

David’s Sin – the turning point Passions Defiance Concealment Cover up Hypocrisy

Husband and father were two of David’s personal bodyguard 2 Samuel 23:24-

39 NIV Among the Thirty were: … (34) … Eliam son of Ahithophel the Gilonite, … (39) and Uriah the Hittite. There were thirty-seven in all.

Grandfather, Ahithophel, was David’s most trusted advisor

2 Samuel 16:23 NIV Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how … David … regarded all of Ahithophel's advice.

Nothing is so tragic as the treachery of a false friend

2 Samuel 11:26-27 NIV When Uriah's wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. (27) After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son.

But God knew differently 2 Samuel 11:27

NIV But the thing David had done displeased the LORD.

David’s sin was set against God’s favor God protected him

from Saul God made him king

Consequences of sin

David’s Installment Plan

Consequences may, but do not necessarily, mirror sin

They may implicate others

They may impact innocents

They may be unforeseeable

Consequences of sin May be far

reaching May implicate

others May involve the

innocent May be

unforeseeable But they are real!

The story of David’s forgiveness is told in 2 Sa 12

Psalms 38 NIV

(1) O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. (2) For your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down upon me. (3) Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; my bones have no soundness because of my sin. (4) My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.

Psalms 38 NIV

(9) All my longings lie open before you, O Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. (10) My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes. (11) My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away. (12) Those who seek my life set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they plot deception.

Psalms 38 NIV

(18) I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.

(21) O LORD, do not forsake me; be not far from me, O my God. (22) Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.

Psalms 130:1-6 NIV Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; (2)

O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. (3) If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? (4) But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. (5) I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. (6) My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

Psalms 51:1-4 NIV Have mercy on me, O God, according to

your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. (2) Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. (3) For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. (4) Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.

Psalms 51:10-12 NIV

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (11) Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. (12) Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Psalms 51:16-17 NIV

You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. (17) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

In weeks to come, we’ll see confession and consequences 2 Samuel 12:7 NIV Then Nathan said to

David, "You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

2 Samuel 12:13 NIV Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied, "The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.

Psalms 32 NIV

(1) Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. (2) Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit.

(5) Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"-- and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Grace gives us a 2nd chance

Romans 8:28 NIV

Psalms 32:9 NIV

Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.

Acknowledge your sins to God Psalms 32:3-5 NIV When I kept silent,

my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. (4) For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Selah (5) Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"-- and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Rejoice in God’s forgiveness – NOW! Psalms 32:1 NIV Blessed is he

whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

Psalms 32:11 NIV Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!

Do it before it’s too late Psalms 32:6 NIV Therefore let

everyone who is godly pray to you while you may be found; surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not reach him.
