Writing BEGINNINGS…Writing BEGINNINGS…You will each be given 1 sentence.Write the sentence at the top of your

paper, and continue the story, writing one intro paragraph.

You will have 5 minutes. When the time is up, pass your

sentence back. The last person will bring your sentence to the front seat.

Now repeat the steps with your new sentence.

Bell-ringer: TuesdayBell-ringer: TuesdayLinking paragraphs, or using

transitions can be difficult. On a piece of paper, tell me what

you know about transitions.

Spooky Story time…Spooky Story time…

A Spooky Place, Out and InA Spooky Place, Out and InLinking paragraphs with effective Linking paragraphs with effective transitions!transitions! For this assignment you will write in

1st person.Write two detailed paragraphs about

a haunted place. It could be a house, building, cave, forest, etc.

In your 1st paragraph describe how the place looks from the outside.

In the second paragraph, go to the inside, moving through the haunted place.

Bridge the paragraphs!!Bridge the paragraphs!!What is a transition?What is a transition?

A transition is an element that smoothes the leap from one paragraph to the next.

There should be a bridge created between the descriptions of the outside and inside.

You can make this transition in two places: in the concluding sentence of your previous paragraph and in the topic sentence of the next paragraph.

Lets brainstorm how a transition between these two paragraphs might look.

In a story the bridge is subtly built, using a phrase like, “On the other hand…” would break the mood!

paragraph?

Strong FinishesStrong FinishesStrong concluding sentences are

important, especially when writing a persuasive piece! ◦Phrases such as “in conclusion” and “

in light of this evidence,” are good, but could sound too formal for your writing!

◦Summarizing facts, and referring back to a question asked in the introduction can be effective as well.

◦Listen to the following paragraph.
