Monologue When one character speaks alone and uninterrupted to the audience or reader

The Question

Choose a poem which describes a scene or incident vividly. Briefly state what is being described and then go on to show how the poetic techniques used make the description vivid.

You should refer to the text and to such relevant features as: word choice, tone, imagery, structure, rhythm, theme, sound, ideas . . .

Sample Introduction 1

This poem is all about street violence and how people don’t get involved. It’s about a man and a women who get pushed through a window by some thieves. The poet is telling us not to stand by and watch others suffer.

“Glasgow 5th March, 1971” is a great poem about street violence. A man and his girlfriend get pushed through a window and badly hurt. The poet is telling us we need to stop the violence in our society.

Sample Introduction 3Edwin Morgan’s poem, “Glasgow 5th March”, is one which I read recently. It is about a young man and his girlfriend and how they are attacked in Glasgow by some youths who want to rob a shop. They get really badly cut. The youths don’t care and just rob the shop.
