Electric Charge

Review: What makes up matter?

Protons = _________Charge Electrons = _________ Charge Neutrons =__________ Charge

When Protons = Electrons are said to be ELECTRICALLY NEUTRAL (no net charge)

IONS (ionic bonds) Gained or lost and electron Charged particle Nonmetal + metal

Polar Covalent Bonds• Uneven sharing of electrons• Partial Charged Particle• Nonmetal + Nonmetal

Nonpolar Covalent Bonds• Equal sharing of electrons• NO net charge• Nonmetal + Nonmetal

Conductors Electrons move easily through these Ex. Metals

Where is the conductor on this electrical wire? How did you know?

Insulators Electrons do NOT move easily

through these Ex: Nonmetals

Where is the insulator on this electric wire? How did you know?

WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? MOVING ELECTRONS

What causes the force of the charges to change?

Distance in between charges

Amount of charge

Electric charge (q) SI Unit Coulombs (C)

STATIC ELECTRICITY The accumulation of excess electric charge (not

balanced) Ex. Lightening

Balloon Demo ( Picking up paper)

Electric force vs Gravitational Force strength

DEMO: Comb and water

Quick Write: Which is stronger electric force or gravitational force? How do you know?

ANSWER The correct answer should be the Electric

Force!

Why? Because like you witnessed in the video or in

class, the electric force can overcome the gravitational pull of the Earth; and the Strong Electric Force is responsible for holding together the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. An atom’s nucleus can only be split by nuclear fusion, which cannot be done on Earth and gravity can’t do this!
