Street party kickstarts Christmas spiritTHE pinnacle of commu-

nity spirit was on displaywhen more than 2000 Kather-ine residents lined RailwayTerrace for the town’s Christ-mas street party on December4.

After an absence of almost20 years, residents of all agesturned out to take part in theevening of fun, which com-menced with a head-turningparade along Railway Ter-race.

The event coincided with

late night shopping alongKatherine Terrace and Cham-ber of Commerce NT Kather-ine branch executive officerSue Jones praised the com-munity for its participation.

“People down RailwayTerrace afterwards said theyhad tears in their eyes be-cause they hadn’t seen any-thing like that in so long,which I thought was a bitcute,” she said.

“I’d like to thank everyoneinvolved, including our spon-

sors, the Christmas in Kather-ine committee, the council,the police and the shops thatstayed open.”

Wild Child Surfwareclaimed top billing forthe best window display,while C.J.’s Beauty Centreand Power and Water Corpo-ration bagged the bestpremises and best govern-ment department categoriesrespectively.

Cassie Berto won the bikeraffle.

Thousands of Katherinites turned out for the first street party in almost two decades. SPECIAL GUESTS: Santa Claus and Mrs Claus made a special trip to Katherine for the party.
