Thousands of injured people need urgent help

On Saturday 25th April a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near the capital Kathmandu. It was the country’s biggest earthquake for 80 years!

The earthquake destroyed buildings and caused avalanches and landslides.

More than 7,000 people have been killed and up to 50,000 people have been injured. The numbers are still rising.

Over 8 million people have been affected

The earthquake happened in the middle of the day. People were shocked. They rushed outside away from buildings where it was safer. The hospitals were overcrowded, and there was a lack of medical staff and materials. Roads were blocked and it was very difficult to contact remote villages.

People were frightened

Many of the injured have: • Spine injuries• Fractures• Head injuries• Amputations

Handicap International teams went into action immediately

The priority is to look after injured people and prevent injuries from becoming long-term disabilities.

Eight-year-old Salina fell and broke her arm during the earthquake. To help her arm heal, Handicap International is doing physiotherapy with Salina and will provide her with a special brace after her operation.
