Project Title: Carbon Footprint

Standard Focus: Algebra, Patterns & Functions Time Range: 2-4 Days

Supplies: Basic Stuff

Topics of Focus: - Writing Multistep Inequalities

- Solving Multistep Inequalities

- Unit Conversions

- Multiple representations

Benchmarks:

Expressions and Equations

7.EE 4. Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

Expressions and Equations

7.EE 4b. Solve word problems leading to inequalities of the form px + q > r or px + q < r, where p, q, and r are specific rational numbers. Graph the solution set of the inequality and interpret it in the context of the problem.

Quantities N-Q 2. Define appropriate quantities for the purpose of descriptive modeling.

Quantities N-Q 3. Choose a level of accuracy appropriate to limitations on measurement when reporting quantities.

Creating Equations A-CED 1. Create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems. Include equations arising from linear and quadratic functions, and simple rational and exponential functions.

Creating Equations A-CED 3. Represent constraints by equations or inequalities, and by systems of equations and/or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or nonviable options in a modeling context.

Reasoning with Equations and

Inequalities A-REI

3. Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.

Procedures: A.) Students will complete “Planes, Trains & Automobiles”. Students will write multistep inequalities to determine if individual’s daily transportations exceeds the CO2 emissions totals described in the Kyoto Protocol.

B.) Students will use the Food Footprint Chart to complete “Well-Traveled Food”. This assignment provides a look at food production and transportation emissions and the difference between local and traditional food sources.

C. ) Using the CO2 Emissions Per Activity chart, Student will complete “the Amazing Race” in which they will make travel and food choices on a cross country trip. Students will need a copy of the Data Log in order to keep track of their data.

EXTENSION: Ask student to estimate their own carbon footprint. There’s a lot of good online sources like: http://www.nature.org/greenliving/carboncalculator/index.htm
