AF mission: Improving access to clean waterWater in the Horn of Africa is a luxury very few people can afford. So people send women and children to collect water from as far as 20 kilometers away,
sometimes in a very unsafe environment to get water. (IRIN)

79% of the residents of the Horn of Africa lack access to clean water
Nearly 1 out of every 5 deaths under the age of 5 worldwide is due to a water-related

In developing countries, as much as 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and

Women and girls are responsible for water collection in seven out of ten households

The average container for water collection in Africa, the jerry can, weighs over 40 lbs when
full.
The average American uses 2,000 gallons of water everyday, the average African uses 5
