TRANSCRIPT
1 Hear this word thatthe LORD has spokenagainst you, O people ofIsrael, against the wholefamily that I brought upout of the land of Egypt:
“You only have I knownof all the families of the
earth; therefore I willpunish you for all youriniquities.
Does a lion roar in theforest, when he has noprey? Does a young lioncry out from his den, if hehas taken nothing?
Does a bird fall in a snareon the earth, when thereis no trap for it? Does asnare spring up from theground, when it has takennothing?
Is a trumpet blown in acity, and the people arenot afraid? Does disastercome to a city, unless the LORD has doneit?
“For behold, I will raise upagainst you a nation, O houseof Israel,” declares the LORD,the God of hosts; “and theyshall oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of theArabah.”
1. The Lord has spoken against Israel - Am 3:1-2
a. With whom He has had a special relationshipb. Whom He now will punish for their sins
2. The Lord raised seven questions with obvious answers - Am 3:3-63. The Lord does nothing unless He reveals it by one of His prophets- Am 3:7-8- Like a lion that has roared, God
has spoken and Amos must prophesy!
1. Ashdod and Egypt are called to witness Israel's wickedness -Am 3:9-10
2. Israel will be plundered by an adversary (Assyria)- Am 3:11-15
Concerning Israel's coming punishment:
- Only a remnant will survive of those who dwell in luxury, like a piece of lamb left over after being ravaged by a lion- Destruction will come upon the altars of Bethel (Jeroboam's idolatry)- Destruction will befall their luxurious homes
“They do not know how todo right,” declares the LORD,“those who store upviolence and robbery intheir strongholds.”
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:“An adversary shall surroundthe land and bring down yourdefenses from you, and yourstrongholds shall beplundered.”
THE "COWS OF BASHAN", THEY ARE INSATIABLE
1. Living in Samaria, they were:a. Oppressing the poor and needy
- Am 4:1b. Crying out for wine - Am 4:2
2. For which they will suffer painful deportation to a foreign land - Am 4:3
A SARCASTIC CALL TO WORSHIP
1. To worship their false gods at Bethel and Gilgal - Am 4:4-5
2. Designed to show how far they have departed from God
THEY HAD REJECTED GOD'S CHASTISEMENTS
1. They had failed to respond to God's efforts to get them to repent
Famine - Am 4:6Drought - Am 4:7-8Pestilence - Am 4:9Plague and war - Am 4:10Earthquake, or perhaps volcanic eruptions - Am 4:11
THEY HAD REJECTED GOD'S CHASTISEMENTS
2. Therefore they must prepare to meet their God!
- Who is bringing such judgments upon them - Am 4:12- Whose name is "The LORD God of hosts" - Am 4:13
1. A LAMENTATION FOR THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL...
a. In view of her coming fall -Amos 5:1-2b. In which only a remnant will be left Amos – 5:3
2. A CALL TO REPENTANCE, FOR THERE IS STILL HOPE
- Seek the Lord and live, lest He come with fiery judgment! -5:4-7- Seek Him who is all powerful! -5:8-9- For He knows your manifold sins!
- 5:10-13- Seek that which is good, not evil; perhaps God will gracious! 5:14-15
3. THE COMING DAY OF THE LORD
-The Lord is coming, and there shall be wailing in the streets and fields - 5:16-17-The day of the Lord is not to be desired by sinful men
-For it will be a day of darkness -5:18-20-For God is repelled by their show of religion, when there should be righteousness and justice - 5:21-24-For they have never really served God, even in the wilderness - 5:25-26
Therefore they will be taken "beyond Damascus" (Assyria!) - 5:25-27
4. WARNING EVEN TO THOSE IN ZION
a. Woe to those who are at ease, trusting in Samaria (the northern kingdom of Israel) - 6:1-2
-Perhaps to defend them-Consider what happened to kingdoms far greater!
b. Woe to those who say the day of the Lord is far off - 6:3-6
-Who bask in their luxury-While their brethren are afflicted
c. They shall be among the first to go into captivity - 6:7
5. THE EXTENT OF THE COMING DESTRUCTION
a. Coming because God hates their pride - 6:8b. A destruction where men will be scarce, and their houses destroyed - 6:9-11
5. THE EXTENT OF THE COMING DESTRUCTION
c. Because they perverted justice and righteousness, pridingthemselves in their own strength -6:12-13d. God will raise up a nation (Assyria) against them, who will afflict them from the north ("the entrance of Hamath") to the south ("the Valley of the Arabah") - 6:14
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM HERE?1. Israel lacked justice and
righteousness, they have done the opposites: oppression and evil
2. All their religion, wealth, and power were in vain
3. They failed to heed God’s chastisement
4. The Day of Judgment is a day of darkness
5. God’s gracious offer of repentance
What about us, will we heed the warnings of Christ and His apostles?
Their message for us is just the same:
"SEEK THE LORD AND LIVE", "SEEK GOOD AND
NOT EVIL"
For He says,“In a favorable time I listened to you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”Behold, now is the favorabletime; behold, now is the day of salvation.
