Dear Robert, . -.0•mmI have your letter of August 18 in front of me. The list of publi
cations has been sent to you and because of non-negotiability here, your cheque has been returned.
m - ' J
What we would like from you for the time being as correspondent would be short, topical items suitable for our Raoe Relations News. Such items could deal with raoe relations in Zambia, relations with and attitudes towards South Africa. Prom time to time we might ask you to report on specific happenings in Zambia. Political events in Zambia and trade figures with South Africa are usually fairly well covered in our looal news and, of course, in the bulletins of our banks. So it would be more those matters which do not get prominence in looal papers here, Mr, Randall will be delighted to have items, or estimates or short articles for Race Relations News,
Then, the Institute has had experience in raoe relations and has published much in many forms on many relevant aspects, I think, that should situations arise, it would be useful if you could direct Zambians' attention to South African and Institute experience. This would be done by reference to our publications, memoranda, or by suggesting specific enquiry from the Institute. I do not suggest that you become a hawker of Institute publications but only relate them in particular circumstances where our experience and knowledge would be useful.
At the moment, I think this should be our arrangement which can change as circumstances change.
I am very glad that you are willing to undertake this chore. I have just hun4 in the Institute a large photo of your father who now joins the array of past Presidents. It took me some time to get the photo!

Dear Professor Reader,
I am sorry I have taken so long replying to your letter dated 13th March but as you may have heard I have had something of a nervous collapse which has put me out of action for a little while.
I am, however, now well on the way to normality and just want to assure you that I shall be only too delighted to take on the post of secretary/treasurer to the local branch of the S. A. Institute of Race Relations.
All good wishes.

Dear Mr '•minton-Whyte,
As you can see from my address,Marion and I have finished at Manchester, and I have just started a job as a Hesearcn Assistant at the University here. The Dept, is writing a textbook for ^ambian undergraduates on the Z. Government and political system.
was very sorry not to see you on ray way up. ^ut we were only in Jhbg for a day - during which our aged car was being repaired. The reason for my writing is twofold. First, to confess that my membership subscription must have lapsed ages ago, and I am not sure what the annual sub. is. Secondly, - and this iB the reason for my writing to you - 1 wondered whether the Institute had a corresponding member up here who sends you periodic news. If so, I would very much like to get in touch with him.. And, if not, Would the / Institute like me to send down information on w h a t e v e r ^ - ^ * topics are specified? I need hardly say that Zambia' is I iJ k il 2. a very exciting country at the mement. Ijiueh of its Cs jt X experience in education, agricultur^-^and its nonracial, public policies (including 3 whitre'ministers elected on ^ the universal franchise roll) are crucially relevant to S.A. /?«/<>>
Finally, I am appending a list of publications (some of which are put out free) which tne Institute’s library migjit care to spend a little money on.
May -1- hope that you can get the chance of coming up here for a few days. There might well be scope for contact between people up here and in the
Institute.A happy flew Year to you both,

Ur. K. Mew,K a n c h e H o u s e C o l l e g e ,Rotten Row,SALISBURY
Dear Ur. Mew,S.A. Institute of Raoe Halations
Hirther to our telephone conversation this morning, I am sorry to say that Ur. Roberts of my department is unable to assume the post of seoretary/treasurer to the Institute in Bhodesia and Zambia, because he has withdrawn from membership. This is not on aoeount of lack of interest but rather financial stringenoy at the moment, and he has undertaken to help us unofficially whenever possible.
In view of your agreement ana of Professor Rousseau's request for you to do so in his letter of 2nd December last, I should now be most grateful if you would take on the task of secretary/treasurer for us. It will hardly be burdensome. I have some 25/- from the sale of Institute publications to hand over to you. As we agreed on the phone, I think our main functions here are t
the promulgation of Institute fact papers, and to provide a forum for any distinguished speakers, visiting or otherwise, who fall in our purview.
fUr the reoord, I would be glad to have your formal acceptance of this request, sending a copy if you would to the Institute in Johannesburg, attention Urs* Britten.
With many thanks,Sincerely yours,
D.E. READERProfessor of Sociology.
