Energy meter communicates with the modem through radio frequency at a frequency of 865 MHz using carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance.
The energy meter on request gives all its instantaneous values to the modem.
The modem communicates with the server using GPRS to update its instantaneous values.

Modem These intelligent infrastructure devices let a utility leverage its
Smart Metering System solution beyond AMI or smart metering. The modems provide a wireless mesh to ensure 100% meter
communications, isolate and pinpoint outage and other service issues, and minimize wide-area communications costs.
They communicate with System Software located at a utility’s service center over GPRS network.
A single modem is built to cater 400 Smart Meters. It is an interface between Utility’s backend and the smart meter.
