CROSSRAIL SYSTEM ALTERATIONS CLIENT Network RailPROJECT Crossrail System AlterationsSERVICES PROVIDED Signalling and Power Supply Systems

THE CHALLENGE

In order to accommodate Crossrail, Network Rail required us to make extensive alterations to the existing signalling and power supply systems on the Great Western Main Line between Acton and Southall.

OUR RESPONSE

Our signalling systems team provided a complete design and build service to Network Rail. Working in close collaboration with other contractors we successfully completed ten significant signalling commissions, with further commissions already agreed.

The project also required us to take many changes of scope and staging strategy in our stride, including the design and successful commissioning of an entirely bespoke, relay controlled shunter’s control panel at the complex West entrance to the yard. This panel controls a pair of tandem points and a double slip along with five ground signals, all interfaced with the Smartlock interlocking at TVSC.

SMART BENEFITSThroughout the project we maintained a fully working railway between each of the commissioning blockades ensuring passenger disruption was kept to an absolute minimum. We also made sure there was full access to the large freight yard at Acton at all times.

Asset management and asset engineeringThrough intelligent asset management, informed decision-making and smart technologies we drive greater value from infrastructure.

We understand that effective asset management is essential for the future success of many public and private organisations, which is why we’re dedicated to the analysis, design and delivery of methods that generate additional value from both physical and social infrastructure.

Our holistic, data-driven, end-to-end approach to asset management is consistent with emerging international standards such as PAS 55 and ISO 55000 and draws upon the unique skills and experience we have across our many areas of operation.

From the very outset of a project we approach asset management from an analytical, data intensive perspective, collecting data on asset condition and performance in order to understand the opportunities and challenges faced by our clients.

From this data our analysts then model how assets will perform under different management regimes in order to identify optimal strategies for delivering long-term asset value. Our engineering teams then design the solutions that make these strategies work before our operational experts help our clients successfully implement and deliver them. Our asset engineering solutions range from field workforce mobility applications through to management information dashboards and can be tailored to operational needs in order to ensure optimal process improvement.

SEVERN TRENT WATER LEAKAGE MANAGEMENTCLIENT Severn Trent WaterPROJECT Leakage Management Initiatives SERVICES PROVIDED Management / Asset Strategy

THE CHALLENGE

Severn Trent Water commissioned us to undertake their leakage management programme, helping them to avoid significant financial penalties if mandatory targets are not achieved.

OUR RESPONSE

We analysed the working practices, techniques and methodologies used throughout three areas of Severn Trent Water to assess standardisation and best practice, before developing a new leakage operating model.

The model optimised performance, ensuring a best practice approach across all aspects of leakage management, driving a ‘right first time’ approach. It included dedicated teams in all activities relating to leakage, zonal balancing via sub-zoning, maximising equipment use in line with seasonal change and designing new KPIs that considered all factors relating to different leakage work streams. Of key importance was advanced training for staff in the use of leak noise correlators, acoustic loggers, step testing and meter flow testing.

SMART BENEFITSBy employing best practice we were able to help Severn Trent Water to meet the leakage target set by OFWAT. This also resulted in a reduction of operational costs of £2 million per annum.

Following our involvement Severn Trent Water achieved their lowest ever historical leakage level, which included Birmingham achieving its target for the first time in ten years and Coventry for the first time in eight years.
