Welcome to the 22nd annual Amerivespa hosted for the second time in the Big Easy! You can’t experience the magic of New Orleans in just one visit, so we’re back to the Crescent City for a little Creole scootering. Your hosts for this year are once again the New Orleans Scooter Cooperative, helped out in no small part by the collective of New Orleans Scooter clubs.

Please remember to WEAR YOUR BADGE AT ALL TIMES, AND WHEN YOU ARRIVE FOR A RIDE, PLEASE BE GASSED UP AND READY TO GO!

What are these strange little boxes?

This year we are using QR CODES so people with smart phones can download maps and information. If you have a smart phone, you can use these codes quite easily. All you have to do is download a QR code scanning app from your device’s app store, open it and use it to take a picture of the code. There are plenty of free scanning apps. Use the QR codes in this pamphlet and in the registration room to easily get maps to all our destinations! SCAN THIS QR CODE AND SAVE IT IN YOUR MAPS. These are the official venue locations for Amerivespa 2014. Keep this map handy so you can find us easily.

Amerivespa 2014 is an AMA Sanctioned event.

By attending Amerivespa 2014 all attendees automatically consent to AMA event rules and regulations, all participants must sign the AMA insurance waiver upon registration. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of registration and expulsion from event.

Alan Pond, a New Orleans Scooterist and

a founding member of the New Orleans Scooter

Cooperative, passed away in November. Alan was

a fixture in the scooter community often traveling

around the country with his fellow mates to attend

rallies far and wide. He was a British ex-pat who

called New Orleans home. He loved Vespas and

his loss is felt by everyone who had the pleasure

of knowing him. Scoot on Alan, you are missed.

New Orleans Scooter CooperativeA cooperative (“coop”) or co-operative (“co-op”) is an autonomous association of persons who voluntarily cooperate for their mutual social, economic and cultural benefit. The Co-op, as we commonly call it, came together to help one another repair and maintain their vintage scooters. More of a wrenching club than a riding one, the

Coop helps all scooterists learn how to work on their ride.

NOLA Ruckus SocietyNola Ruckus Society started in 2009 as a club for Honda Ruckus enthusiasts. With the increasing popularity of this unique scoot, membership has

increased exponentially to include countless Ruckus owners. The group shares an unprecedented passion for customizing these rides, offering each other tools, tips, and time to encourage continued modifications, “Mods vs. Stockers.”

New Orleans Scooter GirlsA gang, not a club, since 2010. It’s true, we are not a club. We don’t have dues or organized meetings, and any rules we have are guided by our friendships. We do however, hang out and ride to our favorite restaurants, bars and festivals, travel together, laugh together, and take many photos of our scooting adventures. We

are organized in a disorderly fashion. We are the New Orleans Scooter Girls, a group of friends who do things together… on scooters.

Voodoo Scooter ClubWe are a loosely knit eclectic group of scooterists who live to scoot and scoot to live. Voodoo actively promotes volunteerism and giving back to the New Orleans community. Previous efforts have included donating to local food banks and the CASA Christmas

party as well as working with local pet rescue organizations. Our main focus will always be promoting safe riding, good road manners, scooter enjoyment and awareness for all. Come ride with us soon!

Parking

Off-Site Parking — Lot HOff-site parking is available to all attendees. Hotel parking can be expensive, so we have an alternative. Just steps away from the Hilton in downtown New Orleans you can safely park your vehicle and trailer for the duration of the event at the Convention Center’s lot.

$10 a day for vehicles $20 a day for vehicles with trailers

The lot will be open Wednesday through Saturday from 11am till 8pm and Sunday and Monday from 8am till 5pm. You will need to pay up front for the duration of your stay. The lot is locked and secure off hours.

Parking is a premium in our city due to it’s age and size. Don’t take a chance leaving your car on the street and don’t pay hotel prices. Trust us, this is a good deal for New Orleans.

The Scooter Cannonball Run – what is it?A “Cannonball Run” boils down the idea of riding from one coast of the continental US to the other. The first recorded transcontinental run on a motorcycle, really a motor-driven bicycle, occurred in 1903 and was ridden by George Wyman. The journey took 50 days but 12 of those days were spent making repairs. The feat or riding coast to coast on a motorcycle comes from the nickname of Erwin “Cannonball” Baker. In 1911 Baker went from Staten Island in New York to Los Angeles on a Neracar for less than $20. Years later Brock Yates would bring the Cannonball Run into the post war era with his “Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash”.

Mike Heytens is credited with the concept of creating a scooter-only variation of the Cannonball in 2002. After two years of planning, the first Scooter Cannonball Run took place in 2004 with nine riders.

To many, the Cannonball is nothing more than a competition to get from one side of the country to the other, faster than anybody else. This is really an over simplification. The Scooter Cannonball Run is the idea of testing an individual’s spirit while doing something that many people think is insane. In the end, each rider defines their own victories. What seems easy to one rider might be the most difficult thing every done by another. Some riders come up with insane ways to test their mettle, like going the distance on 50cc scooters. Others have elected to give terminal late stage cancer the finger and ride coast to coast while ignoring immense physical discomfort caused by their illness.

Truly, the hardest thing about the Scooter Cannonball Run is getting to the starting line and saying goodbye to all your friends at the finish line. The ten days between those events are some of the greatest days a rider will ever experience.

The Scooter Cannonball Run is a test of both rider and machine that covers 3500 miles and takes in some of the best motorcycle roads on the North American continent. Be there to see them end their epic scooter journey at The Transportation Revolution.

Welcome to

Scooter Love: The Story of Christian and CynthiaCalifornia girl meets Philadelphia boy at a scooter rally in Idaho. Two weeks later, they meet again in New Orleans at Amerivespa.

She was a last minute addition to the rally and I trailered a second scooter down for her. I picked her up at the airport Wednesday night and we hit Bourbon Street. As the night became morning and we were walking back to our hotel, a drunk couple stopped us and asked me, “Where are you from?” I said, “Philadelphia.” I asked her where she was from and she said Dallas. Well if you know anything about football, the Eagles and Cowboys are one of the biggest rivalries. So, as I started to give them a hard time for being Cowboy fans, they said come on and lets have a drink together. So as we were toasting they asked, “So what brings you down to New Orleans?” With a straight face I said, “Oh we just booked the date, and we are looking for a wedding venue.” I told them that “when you meet someone special, and you know she is the one, you will do anything for her.”

Well, Cynthia went along with the story and this couple said how cute we were. Then we had our first kiss. We never left each other the rest of the rally. We both weren’t looking for a relationship but something magical happened during the rally and we felt something special. On the last day of the rally we were talking with a friend of hers and I said “it wouldn’t be strange if she just drove back to Philly with me and then flew back home from there.” It took us two days to drive back, and by the time we got back to Philly I knew I didn’t want her to leave and she felt the same.

We both took a leap of faith, and two months later I flew out to California and we drove cross country back to Philly and started our lives together. Six months later she asked me to marry her, and now we are getting married were in New Orleans where it all started for us.

Friday Night

2040 St. Chas. Ave. New Orleans

Eiffel Society – 8:00 p.m.Among the masonry, brickwork and creole homes of New Orleans’ tree-lined streets, one building with its red and green ironwork sticks out. Its history is as curious as its appearance. The Eiffel Society is a little piece of Paris in the sultry south overlooking the street car line on St. Charles Avenue. The “Restaurant de Tour de Eiffel” that was originally designed to occupy the top of Paris’ Eiffel Tower was deemed too heavy for its supports. Having catered to famous names such as Picasso, Chaplin and even Hitler, it was dismantled in 1981 and transported to Louisiana in over 11,000 pieces. It was reassembled 14 feet high in the air as a direct result of the New Orleans Worlds Fair. Architect Stephen Bingler incorporated the restaurant into a new iron and glass behemoth that suggested the latticework and sweeping curves of the Parisian landmark floating above the avenue. It will be a fitting venue for this year’s Friday night party. It’s time to “funk it up” with live music lead by legendary New Orleans piano and organist Joe Krown, featuring John Fohl (of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies) on guitar & vocals, Mark Brooks on bass & vocals, and Mike Barras on drums.

Raffle NOLA Brewing – 10:00 a.m.

New Orleans Lager & Ale represents the creation of refreshing high-quality beer in the heart of New Orleans. Located in the Irish Channel, we provide locally produced products and are sensitive to the taste, look, and feel of great beer. Founded in 2008 by Kirk Coco & Peter Caddoo, NOLA Brewing is providing quality lagers and ales for you to enjoy.

It’s raffle time! We always look forward to this when we attend Amerivespa in other cities, and who doesn’t really? This year in addition to the loads of awesome swag we have from our sponsors, we also have 5 scooters to raffle off!

Kymco has once again stepped up and delivered a really awesome scoot, the Movie 150!

Not to be outdone, Genuine will be offering a brand new automatic Stella!

Rounding out the new scoots on hand is this years offering from Piaggio which we will reveal the day of.

Our friends at FX Motorsports are donating another “rat” scoot to the fray as well. This one we are told will be a very cool runner the details of which are shrouded in secrecy.

The last addition is a vintage restoration from the New Orleans Scooter Cooperative. A 1975 Vespa TS 125. Yup! Donated to the Coop by the Transportation Revolution, we restored this rare scooter for one lucky winner.

As always, raffle tickets are only a buck. The one with

the most, wins the most! GOOD LUCK!

POINTS OF INTERESTMardi Gras Indian Museums: One of the more unknown aspects of New Orleans to tourists is the Mardi Gras Indian. Mardi Gras Indians have been parading in New Orleans at least since the mid-19th century, possibly before. There are only two destinations on this map and they are worth your time to visit if your are interested in a truly unique cultural experience.

Decatur Street: This block of Decatur Street has some fantastic and unique shopping. The French Market is around the corner if you want some cheap Chinese made crap, or you can hit up the myriad of antique shops and junk shops for a truly unique New Orleans souvenir. After that scoot on a little further and hit up Dr. Bob. A New Orleans institution, Dr Bob’s folk art is a must-have souvenir!

IN-TOWN TOURSCemetery Tour: Take a scoot around the city and visit some of New Orleans’ oldest cemeteries.

City Tour: Take a scoot around the city from the Quarter, through Uptown, into Mid City, to the Lakefront, down into the Bywater, and back!

OUT-OF-TOWN TOURSSwamp Tour: Cajun Pride is offering a discounted tour ($10.00) for anyone with an Amerivespa badge. Normal price is between $19 and $24.00 depending on how you book it (see website). You can book online or call in advance, but you must mention Amerivespa in the comment section if booking online. Maps will be provided in the registration room at the Hilton. Tours depart the dock at 9:30 a.m., noon, 2:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. Travel time by scooter is at least 1 hour via Airline Hwy., approx 30 miles.

River Road Plantations Tour: Leave the urban grid behind and scoot along the New Orleans section of The Great River Road past historical plantations as described by Mark Twain: “From Baton Rouge to New Orleans, the great sugar plantations border both sides of the river all the way,... Plenty of dwellings...standing so close together, for long distances, that the broad river lying between two rows, becomes a sort of spacious street. A most home-like and happy-looking region.”

Of course, you won’t have the same perspective of floating down the river, but you’ll experience the freedom of the open road with very few stop signs, as you wind along the Missis-sippi River riding on a two-lane blacktop. Some of the planta-tions on this tour have restaurants. Some may be closed for renovations. Make sure to check with each plantation in the list on the right to help plan your ride. Otherwise, “go with the flow” enjoy the road much like Twain did.

Oak Alley Plantation: Hillary at Oak Alley Plantation is extending a 10% discount on Friday, June 14 for anyone who shows an AV badge. The entire tour takes about two hours and riders should leave the Hilton 1.5 hours prior to the time they wish to arrive. First guided tour of the house begins at 9:30 a.m. and each hour on the half hour until 5:00 p.m. Please gather your group and call ahead with numbers.

Ft. Pike Ride: Ride out to Fort Pike and stop for lunch along the way. Fort Pike is a decommissioned fort, built in 1818 to guard against British re-invasion of the United States. Named after Brigadier General Zebulon Montgomery Pike, the fort guarded the Rigolets pass in Louisiana. It was near the community of Petite Coquille, Louisiana, but is now within the city limits of New Orleans. On the way back, you can make a stop in Little Saigon for some great lunch.

NASA Rocket Ride: Ride out to see NASA’s Michoud (Mee-Shoo) Assembly Facility and stop for a photo op in front of the Rocket! After that, head over to Little Saigon for some grub. Louisiana has the largest Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam and you will ride right through its epicenter in New Orleans East.

Vietnamese Community: Along the way on both the Ft. Pike & NASA Rides, you can stop and eat at one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in town, Dong Phuong. Louisiana is home to many Vietnamese, many of whom engage in traditional fishing. Both Louisiana and Vietnam are former French colonies. New Orleans has several areas with a concentration of Vietnamese-American businesses. The largest among these communities is located around Village de L’Est, which includes significant community and commercial institutions such as Mary Queen of Vietnam Church and Dong Phuong Oriental Bakery. Vietnamese restaurants are a dime a dozen in the city, but Dong Phuong is one of the best and it’s on the way back! It may sound strange but there’s nothing more local than a bowl of Pho. They also have a wonderful bakery that you can grab some scrumptious goodies to take back to your hotel.

Battlefield and Bayous Tour: If you cannot make it to the official Amerivespa long ride starting line on time, or prefer a solo or small group self-guided route, then consider this tour with these optional stops. Important: Leave New Orleans with a full tank of gas!

Chalmette Battlefield, where in 1815 at the Battle of New Orleans, U.S. troops handed the British a resounding defeat in the War of 1812.

Fort Pike, constructed from 1819-1826 to prevent foreign invasion as a result of the attack on the U.S. capital and New Orleans by the British in the War of 1812.

Big Branch Marsh Wildlife Refuge, located on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, is a 19,000 acre refuge and home to endangered and threatened species such as the red-cockaded woodpecker, brown pelican and the American alligator as well as the American bald eagle and other wildlife species.

This self-guided ride ends at the Abita Brew Pub where you can meet up with the official group ride, escorting the Cannonball Run riders on the final leg of their journey which began on June 3 in Hyder, Alaska!

Please allow enough time while in Abita Springs to visit the Abita Mystery House. This roadside attraction features a vintage service station, a 100-year old Louisiana Creole cottage, an exhibition hall of memorabilia and junk, and the much photographed House of Shards. It’s weird, in a good way!
