An operational Apple-1 will go on the auction block later this month, and the rare computer is expected to fetch as much as $392,000. The 37-year-old machine -- thought to be one of only six in working con- dition -- is expected to sell for be- tween $261,000 and $392,000 at the current exchange rate, according to German auctioneer Breker, which is conducting the sale. As impressive as that range may sound, it's far off the record mark of $640,000 set last December for Apple's first production computer. Constructed in 1976, the Apple-1 is one of only 200 produced. British auction house Sotheby's estimates that only 50 still exist. In a time when most personal com- puters were sold as self-assembly kits, the Apple-1 broke new ground as the first personal computer sold with a fully assembled motherboard. However, at a retail price of $666.66, the Apple-1 didn't include a casing, power supply, keyboard, or monitor. A cassette storage option could be purchased for an additional $72. A corked bat report- edly swung by Yan- kees legend Mickey Mantle is hitting the auction block – the Mick’s first known doctored bat. Grey Flannel Auctions is auctioning the Hillerich & Bradsby Co. bat, which was studied by PSA/DNA authenticator John Taube. Taube noticed alterations at the top of the bat’s barrel, and X-rays showed that the barrel had been drilled and filled with cork. “This is the first corked bat of Mantle that we have seen or heard of,” Taube wrote in his report. Part of the bat’s handle is coated in pine tar, a charac- teristic seen on other Mantle bats from the 1960s. Mantle isn’t alone in swinging a doctored bat. Players have been known to add cork and other substances to bats to improve swing speed, all in hopes of adding extra power to their swings. Mantle slugged 536 home runs dur- ing his Hall of Fame career with the Yankees, helping the team win seven World Series championships.

Rare working Apple-1 to go on auction block this monthA working Apple-1 from 1976 is ex-pected to fetch nearly $400,000 laterthis month.

An operational Apple-1 will go on theauction block later this month, andthe rare computer is expected tofetch as much as $392,000.

The 37-year-old machine -- thoughtto be one of only six in working con-dition -- is expected to sell for be-tween $261,000 and $392,000 at thecurrent exchange rate, according toGerman auctioneer Breker, which isconducting the sale. A corked bat report-edly swung by Yan-kees legend MickeyMantle is hitting theauction block – theMick’s first knowndoctored bat.

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature1 cup granulated white sugar4 large eggs1 teaspoon pure vanilla extractZest of 1 large lemon2 cups all purpose flour2 teaspoons baking powder1/4 teaspoon salt1/4 cup fresh lemon juiceIcing:1 cup confectioners' (powdered or icing) sugar,sifted2 tablespoons fresh lemon juicePreheat oven to 350 degrees F and place rackin the center of the oven. Butter, or spray witha nonstick spray, a 9 inch springform pan andthen line the bottom of the pan with parchmentpaper. Set aside.In the bowl of your electric mixer, with the pad-dle attachment, cream the butter and sugaruntil light and fluffy and pale in color (about 3minutes). Add the eggs, one at a time, mixingwell after each addition. Beat in the vanilla ex-tract and lemon zest. Sift together the flour,baking powder and salt and then add to thebatter along with the lemon juice. Mix only untilincorporated.

Pour the batterinto the pre-pared pan,smoothing thetop with an off-set spatula.Bake about 45minutes, or untila toothpick in-serted in thecenter comesout clean. Place on a wire rack to cool, thengently remove the sides of the pan.

For the icing, combine the sifted confection-ers' sugar with the 2 tablespoons lemon juice.(You want the icing to be thicker than a glazebut still thin enough that it will just run over thesides of the cake. If not the right consistencyadd more lemon juice or powdered sugar, ac-cordingly.) Frost the top of the cake, allowingthe icing to drip down the sides. Let the icingset before covering. Makes one - 9 inch cake.

Place the patties on the clean, well-oiled grillgrate. Grill the burgers for about 5 minutes perside. Do not press down on the burgers whilecooking.

If you don't have a grill, you can use a grill panor a cast iron frying pan for the burgers.

1 pound ground beef 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard2 cloves minced garlic2 green onions, chopped1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese1 eggSalt and freshly ground black pepper

Put ground beef, mustard, garlic, onions, bluecheese, and egg into a large bowl. Use yourhands to gently mix the ingredients togetheruntil just incorporated. Do not over-mix.Shape into patties, about 1/2 inch thick andlarger than your bun. Chill until you are readyto cook.

Prepare charcoal or gas grill for cooking overhigh direct heat. Using tongs and a folded uppaper towel dipped in vegetable oil, oil the grillgrates. Make sure grill is hot and well oiled be-fore laying down the patties. Season pattieswith salt and pepper.

The event will beheld the weekend of May 18-19 at600 East New Haven Avenue in Mel-bourne.

“This promises to be an amazingand eclectic two-day sale,” saidLloyd Matheson of Matheson’s Auc-tions. “The range of antiques and artto be offered is truly grand.” To makethe sale even better, Matheson’s, inconjunction with United AppraisalGroup of Miami, will also offer selectproperty from four prominent SouthFlorida estates. Start times bothdays are 11 a.m.

Heading up a wonderful selection ofEuropean, American and Asian fur-niture will be a monumental 9 ½ foottall 18th century inlaid secretary,which was the focal point of the livingroom in the Coles’ Florida estate. Itis expected to realize $10,000-$15,000. Also sold will be a lovelyperiod Georgian mahogany break-front measuring 7 feet by 8 feet (est.$15,000-$20,000).

Many other pieces of Asian furnitureare profusely carved and inlaid withmother of pearl. Decorative pieceswill feature a pair of palace-sized19th century rose medallion vases,24 inches tall each (est. $3,000-$5,000). Bidders will also be treatedto numerous examples of fine an-tique china and glassware, estatejewelry, sterling silver, estate car-pets, fine art and sculptures.

The fine art category is dotted withsome of the foremost names in theindustry, starting with Pablo Picasso.

His 1950 Madoura ceramic plate, ti-tled Goat’s Head in Profile, meas-ures 10 ¼ inches in diameter, ishand numbered in black glaze(96/200). The original round/squareplate of white earthenware clayshows decorations under a partialglaze (est. $6,000-$8,000).

Also sold will be an original oil onboard by the renowned French artistHenri Baptiste Lebasque (1865-1937). The 10 ½ inch by 14 inchpainting depicts a young girl out-doors, wearing a hat in a colorful gar-den setting with flowers. It is signedlower right and is expected to fetch$25,000-$35,000. Lebasque was fa-mous as a painter who spread “joyand light” in his works.

Perhaps the top lot of the sale will goto an oil on canvas portrait ofEleanor Slater, the granddaughter ofSamuel Slater, known as the Fatherof the Industrial Revolution. The por-trait, by American artist Robert(Henry Cozad) Henri (1865-1929), issigned and dated (1911) on thelower right and measures 31 inchesby 26 inches. It is expected to gavelfor $35,000-$45,000.

The estate jewelry pieces are daz-zling, and are made up of over 50lots, featuring: a 14kt yellow gold di-amond, emerald and sapphire foliatepin with a total gross weight of 32dwt. (est. $2,000-$3,000); and a 14ktyellow gold diamond, emerald andsapphire cocktail ring with a totalgross weight of 17.30 dwt. (est.$1,200-$1,800). Other rings, neck-laces, brooches, pins and earringswill also be offered.

Goldin Auctions of West Berlin wants tosell more than 100 items from the LosAngeles Lakers' pro career and his daysas a high school player in suburbanPhiladelphia. The keepsakes — includ-ing uniforms, rings and trophies — wouldbe offered on consignment for PamelaBryant, the athlete's mother.

But Kobe Bryantis trying to blockthe plannedJune auction, in-sisting he ownsthe memorabilia.The disputemoved to a fed-eral court inCamden Thurs-day, when an at-torney for theauction houserequested acourt order to allow the sale.The filing noted Goldin Auctions alreadyhas paid a $450,000 advance to PamelaBryant, who wanted to buy a new homein Nevada.

If a judge approves the sale, bidderscould compete for shorts, jerseys, jack-ets and varsity letters that Bryant woreat Lower Merion High School in Ard-more, Pa. They could vie for NBA All-Star and Championship rings, a 1996Gatorade National Player award and a1992 Sonny Hill League Future StarsChampion Trophy.

The lineup also would include a teamjersey from Bryant's childhood in Italy,which is described as "the earliestknown Kobe Bryant game-worn jerseyever offered at auction." Bryant lived in

Italy when his father, Joe, a formerPhiladelphia 76er, played professionalbasketball there.

Pamela Bryant contends the collectibleshave been in her possession for at least15 years, a court filing says. It adds shestored the items in West Berlin over thepast five years at a cost of $1,500 permonth.

According to the filing, Pamela Bryant"indicated her son gave these items toher, stating 'Here Mom, these are foryou.' "

The athlete'sattorney sees itdifferently."Mr. Bryant'spersonal prop-erty has endedup in the pos-session ofsomeone whodoes not law-fully own it,"asserted MarkCampbell ofLoeb & Loeb in

Los Angeles.

Goldin's attorney, Jeffrey Cohen ofCherry Hill, N.J., could not be reached.According to the lawsuit, Kobe Bryant'sattorneys contacted Goldin AuctionsTuesday, the same day the planned auc-tion was announced. Their cease-and-desist letter insisted the auction becanceled and the items returned to theplayer.

In seeking an injunction against KobeBryant, Goldin's attorney cited the po-tential loss of the advance payment toBryant's mother, as well as the loss of a20 percent commission on auction sales.The filing also noted Pamela Bryant stillhas some 900 items from her son's ca-reer with an estimated value of $1.5 mil-lion.

Young, who moved to Sweden in the

1970s, has kept the anti-nuclear

bomb songs in his private collection

for 50 years, but he is now selling

the sheets off to help cover costs forthe Folklore Centrum store he runsin Stockholm.

He adds,"My daugh-ter, who is39, came tome and said,'Papa, I'msick of yousurviving bym i r a c l e s . 'You have tosell that BobDylan song.'She con-vinced me Ihad to, and

she moved it to a bank vault for me.It's going to be the first time in my lifeI'll have real money."

The lyrics are expected to pull in asmuch as $56,000 (£35,000) whenthey go under the hammer atChristie's auction house in Londonnext month (Jun13).

Gandhi’s personal items,letters up for auction

Up forsale are arti-cles that be-longed to the Father of the Nationwhen he was recovering from illnessat Juhu in 1924, including his per-sonal prayerbeads, shawl madefrom linen thread that he spun him-self, bed sheet, personal bowl withfork and spoon, drinking cup andivory-carved ‘Three Wise Monkeys’that he owned.

The sale takes place on May 21 dur-ing the next Mullock’s Auction of im-portant historical documents at theLudlow Racecourse.

Gandhi’s will and power of attorney,which he wrote in 1921, and a seriesof important letters are also up forauction. One of these, written in1937 settles a highly controversialdispute, which was then taking placewithin the Indian National Congress.There are also original portraits andphotographs of Gandhi, some ofwhich have been personally signedby him.

“This is unquestionably one of themost important sales relating to In-dian history to be staged in recentyears,” commented Mullock’s Histor-ical Documents Expert, RichardWestwood-Brookes. “We are offer-ing many highly important andunique items and we are expectingstrong interest from around theworld,” he said.
