ATA’s 14 Annual Convention in 1973 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City offered a field trip

to IBM Research Laboratories for a live demonstration of

how computers could aid translation.

ATA’s 30th Annual Conference in 1989 at the Holiday Inn Crowne

Plaza in Arlington, Virginia featured 77 presentations.

Why We Must Fly on a Plane When We Would Rather Fly in It: Translating Collocations Veronica S. AlbinCollocation refers to the restrictions on how words can be used together (forexample, which prepositions are used with particular verbs, or which verbs,nouns, and adjectives are used together and in what order). David Sedarismade us laugh when he translated Easter Bunny into his beginner’s French asthe Rabbit of Easter. In our profession, however, misusing collocations is hard-ly a laughing matter. This workshop will explore the wonders of words huntingin packs. Attendees will learn how to recognize collocations and render themunequivocally in the target language. Spanish examples will be used, but thisseminar will benefit all attendees who work with Romance languages.

RamacciottiAudiovisual translation is a very dynamic field in translation studies where pro-fessionals are exposed to a wide range of discourse and context. We will exam-ine the similarities and differences between this kind of translation and othermodalities. We will analyze the translation procedures and strategies most fre-quently used to create meaningful and "invisible" subtitles. Participants will alsoget the chance to create subtitles for television sitcoms, feature films (dramaand comedy), and directors’ commentaries, among other genres.

Accounting for the Financial Crisis: The Terminology of Financial Instruments Accounting Under IFRSs Robin BonthroneUsing German and English terminology as examples, this seminar will examinethe complex concepts and terminology of accounting for the financial crisis,referring specifically to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs).Starting with the terminology of the relevant standards in both languages, wewill analyze issues such as hedge accounting, risk disclosures, and changes inaccounting pronouncements in response to the crisis---from the "fair valueoption" to the latest proposals on fair value disclosures, followed by an analysisof how German industrial corporations and banks reported their financial instru-ments accounting and risk management activities in 2008 and 2009.

Dealing with Typological Differences Among Languages in Interpreting Pavel Palazhchenko (DDS Slavic Languages Division)

This seminar will focus on certain typological differences among languages---mostly Russian and English, with discussion of other European languages---thatinterpreters need to keep in mind. Strategies for identifying these differenceswill be discussed. The differences between the styles of Russian and Englishpolitical, technical, and other texts and oral presentations, as well as specificlexical difficulties related to the rapid evolution of vocabulary and linguisticinteractions, will also be covered.

The theater department at Pace University will present a short play translated by Phyllis Zatlin, a literary translator and ATA member. After the play, attendees are encouraged to attend "L-5: Translating a Play for Production in the Target Language" from2:00 pm to 3:30 pm---a roundtable discussion with experts in the field of translating plays for full production---arranged through the efforts of Rutgers University professors.
