Welcome New & Transferring Auxiliary Members: We are proud to welcome two new Auxiliary Sisters this month. Christine Morris Laura Phillips 2014 Membership cards are in. Let's all get a Early Bird stamp. Senior dues $26.00 Juniors $6.00 For God and Country Melynda Smith Membership Chairperson

Hello Ladies We have had a fairly quiet month. We did raffle off the gas grill. The winner had the choice of the grill or $200 cash and he took the grill. The winning ticket was the last ticket sold. The winner of the grill was Steve Chisler. I want to thank everyone for the support given to the Auxiliary for their programs. The Auxiliary will be raffling off a gun on Sunday September 7th. More information will follow via Facebook and mail. The 2013-2014 membership cards are now available. The dues have not

increased and are still only $26. Please get your dues paid and get the early bird stamp on you card. You can leave a check with the bartender at the post and your card will be there within days or we can mail it to you. I want to pass on a personal thank you from Jim Faltermeier, House Committee Chairman, to all that brought a dish to pass for the July 7th cookout celebrating the 4th of July. The food was delicious and plentiful. I am asking everyone to keep Bill Pless in their prayers. Bill is the husband of our Chaplain, Kathy Pless.

He is going through some very tough health problems and needs all the prayers we can give in his name. Unit 91 planning meeting will be Saturday August 24th @ 9:00. This will be planning for our fundraiser throughout the year. Please bring your ideas to this discussion. Breakfast will be served. Our next meeting will be Thursday, August 1st @ 6:30, see you there. J. D. Geiser, Post 91 Commander, will be our guest speaker. Please plan to attend. Kathy McMartin Unit 91 Auxiliary President [email protected]

Dear Post 91 family,

Over the past few months, I have been getting questions about the Four Pillars of the American Legion. I would like to give you a brief overview of what they are. In 1919, the American Legion was founded on Four Pillars:

#1 Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation

#2 National Security

#3 Americanism

#4 Children and Youth

Each of these has many

different ways that benefit the American Legion family.

Pillar #1: VA benefits, education/career/health centers, and other specialized veteran services.

Pillar #2: POW/MIA, Operation Comfort Warriors, and troop support

Pillar #3: Baseball, Boys & Girls State, flag etiquette

Pillar #4: Child welfare foundations, scholarships, and youth support

This is just a small sample of what programs are encompassed in the Four

Pillars. If you would like to know more, go to www.legion.org. If you are looking for a place to get plugged in and volunteer, see me or the service officer. We have many committees already established. If we don’t have your particular area of interest, we may be able to establish a new committee. As always, we are looking for volunteers and people to help with projects. Your time and efforts are appreciated.

For God and Country JD Geiser Commander, Post 91

Hello everyone at Post 91 from your ALR I will start this newsletter article with a brief update on the status of a fellow legion and ALR member, Bill Pless. However, by the time you read this newsletter, this information may be outdated. Hopefully he will be home or on the way home for a recovery until the next procedure occurs. For those of you who don.t know him, Bill is more dedicated to aiding veterans and their families than anyone I have ever met. He has the ability to infect most others with his enthusiasm to ‘get the job done’ and have fun doing it. If we could bottle his

spirit and energy and then pass it out to the rest of us, then we would be able to help many more of our brothers and sisters in need. Now Bill needs to redirect that energy and spirit in another direction. Himself. He has been a patient at University Medical Center in Tucson suffering a serious heart condition. Currently his condition fluctuates. Until he is stable he and Kathy are asking, understandably, that only a select group visit. Right now he needs his crack team of specialists, his family and rest to get to the next step of recovering. I know cards, prayers and messages of

encouragement from his ‘other family’ would mean a lot. You can send cards to Bill Pless c/o UMC 4NE, room4724 1501 N Campbell Tucson, Az 85724. In the meantime, we will figure out the best way to channel information to his ‘other family’ you. Probably through Dave Andersen, Theresa Vodka, Terry Schroeder, Melynda Smith or myself Thank you for your support. Most of you know by now that the ALR is starting the 5th year of raffling a new

August 30th 1895 was the very first professional football game played in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The Latrobe team hired a substitute quarterback named John Brallier for $10 in expense money making him the very first professional player. Football is just about to begin. Post 91 will have the NFL package so members can watch their favorite teams every Sunday. September 8th will be the very first regular season games this season. The S.A.L. will be hosting the very first Post 91 tailgate party. We will be barbequing out front of the

post, so save the date and plan on being at the post for a great day with friends. Look for the fliers at Post 91 or more information in next month’s newsletter. Also, starting September 8th the S.A.L. will also be starting our Sunday breakfasts for the next 17 weeks throughout the football season. We will be bringing back some of the best breakfast cooks Post 91 has ever known. For those that remember the days of Paul and Jimmie cooking on Sundays there will sure be a line at the door waiting for the return of those famous biscuits and gravy. Please come

out and support the S.A.L. on Sunday mornings starting at 10:00 am. It is also that time of the year all members need to think about renewing their membership for 2014 early bird dinner. Sept. 8Th at the S.A.L. tailgate party event the Post will be hosting a membership drive for existing members to renew and for members to bring in new members to sign up. All three entities will be at Post 91 with your 2014 cards, if you pay that day you will receive your card right away. If a new member signs up they will also be

able to get their card immediately if they have the correct information. All new members will have to have the DD214 or discharge papers in accordance with the entity they are joining. S.A.L. will be making a big push this year to get to 100% membership before the end of the year. The S.A.L. will also be looking for new dual members and junior members. S.A.L. as a dual member. We also have a junior program that allows your children or grandchildren under the age of 18 join the S.A.L. Both the duel member and junior membership is only $10 to join. Chris “Baz” Balsley Squadron 91 Commander [email protected]

member get to his brother’s internment. On July 21 we voted to help an active duty serviceman and his family. Andrew White is the son in law of an ALR member. His father is retired navy. Andrew is, army stationed in Ft. Lewis Washington. He and his wife Catherine drove to the Phoenix area because, at the time, it was thought that his father was recovering from a stroke. It turned out to be brain cancer. Catherine is a certified nursing assistant and will stay here as a care giver. Andrew needs to return to duty July 26 and they needed assistance to get him back to Ft. Lewis. We approved money for

an airline ticket and a little more for expenses. Working with so many vets truly in need makes us realize that most of our problems are not as bad as we first pictured them. I think it is great that we make enough profits each year to help when the need is there for the vets.

Harley. I have told you through this article, other ALR members have told you and flyers hang throughout the post. I know you have to dig a little deeper for this raffle than any other. But remember: 1. The chances of winning one of the prizes is higher than most any other (we only sell 300 tickets, with a chance to win one of the three prizes, 2. The payoff is greater than any other raffle or lottery I know of, 3. Every ticket is a winner because the profits are given to veteran causes, many of them local.

This is our (ALR) major project for the year. Because of it’s success, the ALR is able to donate to many veteran causes many of them local organizations and individual vets and their families. We will keep you updated on the many ways we help. In the last month we have donated 30 dress shirts to veterans at Mana House, possibly to be used when a vet needs one for a job interview, etc. Mana House is a temporary home/shelter for homeless vets and many times out of work. Over the past 2 years we have made Mana House one of our ongoing local charities. We approved to match the legions contribution of 300 dollars to help a post 91

December is not only our bike raffle month. On December 7th there will be a dedication of a new WWII memorial at the state capital. Anyone, post member or not, is urged to participate. The ALR will dedicate ourselves to the RUN TO THE GUNS, a salute to the fallen. Two guns one mounted on the
