Talk About It

SweetMemories

Gingerbread, candy canes, sugarcookies, fudge ...This is the time ofyear when manypeople indulge theirsweet tooth. Use thefollowing questionsto discuss yourfavorite desserts.

What is yourall-time favoritedessert? Describewhat makes it sodelicious. Whomakes the bestversion?

Do you have a stardessert that you’vetaken to familygatherings andpotlucks? What is it?Where did you findthe recipe? What doothers love about it?

When you wereyounger, did youlearn to bake fromsomeone else—perhaps a parent orgrandparent? Whatmemories do youhave of preparingdesserts with others?

Have you evermade your owncandy, such aspeanut brittle, divinityor taffy?

Surviving theHoliday Season

By Brian Rosso, R.D.During the holiday season, the

average person experiencesincreased stress and gains aboutfive pounds.

This weight gain and stress can beminimized by following thesuggestions listed below.

Exercise on a regular basis. Peoplewho schedule time to exercise aremore successful at keeping the extrapounds off and feel better overall.

Avoid overeating your holidayfavorites! Eat a healthy meal beforegoing to a party. Drink plenty ofwater, decaffeinated tea ordecaffeinated coffee. Not only will theliquids hydrate you, but they will alsofill your stomach and decrease yourchances of overeating. Enjoy yourfavorite holiday foods, but eat themoff a small plate. This limits theamount of food you will eat and helpskeep the extra pounds off.

Keep your stress to a minimumover the holidays. Get plenty ofsleep, at least eight hours a night.Socialize with family and friends.Eat well-balanced meals. Do notforget breakfast—it is the mostimportant meal of the day.

Happy Holidays!
