Love Is AgelessPlease join us here at American House North on
February 12, 2016, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., for ourannual Love Is Ageless / Valentine’s Party. We will be
enjoying sweet treats, punch, champagne, entertainment by Mo and dancing. Invite your
family/friends to join us for a fun-filled evening.
Sweet ThinkingCraving a sweet treat this Valentine’s Day? Feel
free to indulge in a little dark chocolate. With evenmore antioxidant properties than some fruits andvegetables, plus special compounds that can helplower LDL cholesterol, dark chocolate is one way tomake your heart happy this holiday. For chocolatelovers, the dark stuff is a smart choice every time—studies show it may also improve blood flow to thebrain and boost cognitive function. Be sure to look forchocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa content forthe most nutritional benefits.

PRESIDENTS’ DAYTHIRD MONDAY IN FEBRUARY
Presidents’ Day—Did You Know?
Until 1971, both Feb. 12 andFeb. 22 were typically observed asholidays to honor the birthdays of
Abraham Lincoln and GeorgeWashington. In 1971, PresidentRichard Nixon proclaimed one
single federal holiday, Presidents’Day, to be observed on the thirdMonday of February, honoring allpast presidents of the U.S. Sincethat change in 1971, the commonterm has been Presidents’ Day.However, the federal statute still
designates this day asWashington’s birthday. That’s
because President Nixonerroneously believed that a
presidential proclamation on thematter carried the same weight as
an executive order.

Blooms of LoveIt’s a love affair in full bloom that
just keeps growing. Roses, with theirsoft petals and sweet scent, havecharmed people of all ages and walksof life, been immortalized in art andverse and served as a longtimesymbol of love and affection.
Although fossils indicate theexistence of roses as far back as35 million years, cultivation of theflower is believed to have startedabout 5,000 years ago in China.Roses were grown all over the RomanEmpire, then introduced throughoutEurope in the 18th century. Since thattime, hundreds of varieties of roseshave been cross-produced to createtoday’s boundless bouquet of colorsand fragrances.
Creating a new rose variety takesabout 10 years of testing anddevelopment. The new rose is namedby its grower. Some roses are labeledbased on their color or otherattributes, but many are the namesakeof a famous person or celebratedplace or event. Continual favorites arethe Peace, Queen Elizabeth andKnock Out varieties.
Roses take center stage onValentine’s Day, when more thanone-third of American consumers willbuy the blooms as gifts. The mostpopular color is red, symbolizing loveand passion.
