Region IV Newsletter Volume 44, Issue 2 John Wilt, Editor & Publisher Spring-Summer 2009
A Welcome Letter to New Members and a Welcome Back Letter to Current Members
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to membership in the American Criminal Justice Association. There are many benefits to being a member of ACJA, not the least of which is the knowledge and experiences that members obtain at conferences. Having been a member of ACJA for about 14 years, I can tell you that student members have a great time at both Regional and National Conferences. They enjoy competing in the academic testing, crime scene competition, physical agility and firearms competition. If there are any of your members who are interested in competing in the firearms competition, please refer them to the national rules at acjalae.org since it is mandatory that they read, understand the rules and meet the qualifications in order to compete in that competition. The date of the 2009 Region IV Conference will be November 12, 13, and 14 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, close to the Philadelphia airport. The conference theme will be homicide and we have one of the lead investigators on the BTK killer doing a presentation. The afternoon presentation has been changed and is still in the planning stage. Sam Dameron (webmaster for Region IV) has placed the information on the Region IV webpage and Karen has inserted it on the national webpage under Region IV. Last November we were in Ferrum, Virginia with Dub Osborne’s chapter, DELTA XI OMEGA and hopefully next year, we will be in West Virginia. There are textbook names and authors posted on Region IV National webpage so you will know where the information that the multiple choice/true-false questions will be taken from. What I do for my student members in this case is contact the publisher and ask for one examination copy of those textbooks, and disseminate them
to students so that they can outline the chapters, make notes, etc and then distribute them to other students to use for studying. The information for the LAE Knowledge exam can be gotten off the National Website. All of that is explained on the national website. My student members hold fundraising events so as to reduce their individual costs when attending conferences. Bake sales, pizza sales, t-shirts, cups with logos or CRJ saying are just a few of the methods we use to raise money. There is a dance at the awards banquet at regionals, and there usually are about three dances at nationals. Those events are semi formal dress-up. There are sometimes job fairs at regionals and always at nationals. ACJA members are highly sought after by CRJ agencies across the United States. As I am sure you are aware, that working in this field is all about the development of relationships. C.O.P.S. and L.O. are jointly hosting the Region IV Conference this year. Thanks to Joe Walsh, the firing range and obstacle course are only a few miles away from the hotel. The hotel offers cooked to order breakfasts and two drinks and snacks to those staying onsite. Talk to your fellow members and bring as many members as possible. I am really excited about the 2009 Region IV conference in November. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me. My experience in ACJA has been wonderful and I look forward to meeting you and your chapter. My email address [email protected] and my cell number is 302-388-6637.

Vice President’s ReportNicci Koban
Let me start by saying that I am honored to have been your Vice-President for the past year, and look forward to continuing to work with all of you. It truly is an honor to a part of this great organization and to be in the company of such wonderful and professional friends. I hope this newsletter finds you and your chapter well and I hope to be seeing you at the Regional Conference in November.
The Region IV Regional Conference is proudly hosted this year by Chi Omega Pi Sigma (my chapter) and by President Steve Atchley’s chapter, Lambda Omega. We are very excited to be bringing you 3 days of competitions, seminars and camaraderie in the city of brotherly love- Philadelphia. The conference will be held November 12-14 at the Embassy Suites in Philadelphia, by the airport. Make sure to check the Region IV website for the registration packet, as we’ve decided not to mail it this year to save money and paper. The theme is homicide and we will have some powerful speakers to educate you. Please make your reservations as soon as possible. The room rates are $115/ night (single through quad) but include a cooked to order breakfast and nighttime hors de voures and drinks. We hope to see you there!
As many of you know, I am a huge proponent of staying with the organization after you graduate from college. Remember- this organization started out as just professionals in the beginning. ACJA can help you network into finding a job in the criminal justice field, or help you find a better job once you are in the field, as well as offering you job-related training. Meeting with professionals from across the country and picking their brains once or twice a year can not only help you in your job field, but also educate you in ways you may not have had previously. I have met my very best friends in this organization and continue to meet more wonderful members each and every year. For these reasons, I started COPS, the only active professional chapter in Region IV. We are always welcoming new members and we encourage you to stay with LAE after graduation and become a member at large, start your own professional chapter, become a part of ours, or stay with your collegiate chapter. Remember- collegiate members (upper and lower division) can also join a professional chapter. Our chapter is thriving (we just welcomed 7 new members), and we look forward to co-hosting this upcoming conference. Visit us at www.acjacops.com. I am always available via email at [email protected].
Stay safe, and see you in November.

Chi Omega Pi sigma (COPs) newsCOPS has had an awesome
year! With many members attending the National Conference in Jacksonville, we walked away with a 3rd Place professional team firearms trophy and an LAE knowledge trophy. We enjoyed St Augustine and visited awesome museums and sights. The weather in Florida was exceptional and we spent many fun nights “reconnecting” with old friends at the neighboring Jacksonville Landing.
Upon arriving home from Jacksonville, a few COPS members were visited by Matt “Hutch” Hutchison from Region 3. Hutch is a dear friend of COPS is now serving in Kuwait with the Wyoming National Guard. COPS had a great time showing him the sites around Media and dining on famous Geno’s cheese steaks in Philly before seeing him off at the airport. Shortly thereafter he reported overseas. He is in our hearts and prayers and we look forward to his safe return home upon completion of his tour!
Since the National conference, COPS has hosted their 3rd annual BBQ and Business Meeting in August. As always, the BBQ was a success and everyone had a memorable time. We were honored to have members
from several other chapters in attendance. We welcomed 7 new members into our chapter at the meeting, and handed out info packets to many more interested professionals and students. We will be starting our fundraising drive to earn money for our members to attend the upcoming regional and national conferences. We will be starting a Joe Corbi’s pizza fundraiser shortly, as well as a flat screen TV raffle and scrap booking fundraiser to be held in January.
COPS members seem to be spreading out across the country lately due to military service. Andrew Clauhs will be starting military boot camp shortly for the Army National Guard and we all wish him the best! We are hoping
he will be back in our area in time to head to Portland with us. Good luck Andrew, in becoming Army strong.
Members Ashley and Ryan Wilkins were married last October and headed into the Navy in November, shortly after the Ferrum Conference. After going through boot camp and additional job training, they just reconnected again in August and are currently based in California at separate bases. Even though they spent the better part of the past year apart, they still will not be able to celebrate their one-year anniversary together! Ashley recently shipped out on the USS Decatur, and will be returning in a few months. Ashley and Ryan met in 2006 at the West Chester regional conference and have been together ever since. We wish you all the best and a safe return home. Thank you for your service to our great country.
COPS members continue to grow and flourish. We are always welcoming new members to our chapter. Check us out at www.acjacops.com, or email us at [email protected]. We hope to see all of you in November at the Regional Conference!
