AMERICAN CRAFT BEER WEEK ® MAY 11-17, 2015 POSTER © BRIAN DEVINE & BREWERS ASSOCIATION MISSOURI WEST VIRGINIA Striking beauty and a nod to mountaineer lifestyle make West Virginia an amazing area to explore. Seek out some of the state’s tasty craft breweries, with 17 in operation or in planning. VERMONT The second least-populated state is the country’s leading producer of maple syrup, accounting for over 5% of the world’s supply. Vermont also leads the US in craft beer produced per capita in 2013, with just over 15 gallons per adult resident. TENNESSEE Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park was one of the most visited national parks in the country last year. All that hiking would make one thirsty—pay it forward and get the first round from one of Tennessee’s 40+ craft breweries. OKLAHOMA Oklahoma is one of the many states with milk as their state beverage. Milk?! Wouldn’t a beer from one of the 11 craft breweries go much better with your meal? MISSING MILK Sweet Land of Li-beer-ty! Wisconsin isn’t just known for cheese. It currently has 100+ craft breweries. WASHINGTON The Evergreen State is right! Washington produces more hops than any other state—enough to supply their nearly 400 craft breweries, along with the rest of the beer industry. OHIO Any place that boasts the Rock & Roll and Football Halls of Fame is bound to have plenty of craft beer around. It’s true, with over 75 breweries, Ohio ranks 12th in number of breweries per state. NORTH DAKOTA With only six craft breweries, the Flickertail State will inevitably add more—especially since North Dakota is one of the country’s top barley producers. NEW YORK In 1612, New Amsterdam (now Manhattan) became the location of the first brewery in what was to become the United States of America. NEBRASKA The Ogallala aquifer is the country’s largest aquifer and Nebraska also has the most water reserves of any state. Meaning? The state’s 29 craft breweries should have plenty of that ingredient to keep on brewing. KENTUCKY The 212.2 million ounces of craft beer produced by Kentucky craft breweries in 2013 outweigh the 147.3 million ounces of gold at Fort Knox. HAWAII Paradise has its drawbacks too: the Aloha State is the rainiest state in the US (460 in/yr). Hawaii’s seven craft breweries will keep you occupied until the sun comes out. ARIZONA Arizona is one of two states that don’t follow Daylight Savings time. So while others are worrying about springing forward and falling back, you can enjoy one of the state’s 50+ craft breweries. DELAWARE Need directions? Delaware’s tourism bureau provides a map of the state’s 10 breweries to visit along with other destinations on your travels. INDIANA The state with the world’s greatest spectator sport, the Indianapolis 500, just begs for the world’s greatest spectator sport beverage: craft beer! Indiana has plenty, with 100+ craft breweries open and in planning. Root beer was invented here in 1898, but beer over 5% by weight (6.25% ABV) was not allowed in the state until 2012 through the efforts of “Raise your Pints.” The program raised the permissible alcohol content in beer to 8% by weight (10.1 % ABV). MISSISSIPPI MONTANA Montana ranks third in breweries per capita with over six breweries per 100,000 adult residents. 3rd PENNSYLVANIA There are plenty of breweries to visit in the Keystone State: Pennsylvania ranked 8th in number of breweries in the country in 2013. RHODE ISLAND Come to terms with the fact that this state isn’t an island at one of Rhode Island’s 10+ craft breweries. WYOMING Yellowstone National Park was established in 1872 as America’s first national park and encom- passes 3,468 acres. That’s plenty of land to explore and plenty of craft beer to sample as Wyoming ranks 6th in breweries per capita. OLD FAITHFUL COLORADO Many try to summit each of the Centennial State’s 58 fourteeners (14,000ft peaks), a lofty goal—but the real challenge is trying to visit each of the state’s 200+ breweries. GEORGIA Georgia is the nation’s number one producer of the three Ps—peanuts, pecans and peaches, but could easily rank number one in porters, pilsners and pale ales if they were able to get past some outdated legislation. IDAHO For a state known for its potatoes, Idaho actually has the third highest acreage (over 3,800 acres) of any state devoted to hop production. LOUISIANA Coastal Louisiana wetlands support the largest commercial fishery in the United States. So what is the perfect pairing for all of the Pelican State’s delicious seafood? A craft beer from its small, but proud contingent of 15 craft breweries. ALABAMA More like ‘ALE’-Bama: the state has more than tripled its number of craft breweries in the past four years, from six in 2011 to 19 in 2015. 2011 2013 2015 6 10 19 ALASKA The average temperature for Anchorage in January is around 23°F. Not what you’d consider prime beer festival weather, unless you’re talking the Great Alaska Beer & Barley Wine Festival held each year during that month. CALIFORNIA The Golden State boasts the most craft breweries (400+), most barrels produced by craft breweries per state (29,000) and the largest contribution to the economy ($4.69 billion) from their small and independent craft breweries. CONNECTICUT Hop on the Connecticut Ale Trail to visit some of the Nutmeg State’s 30+ craft breweries. KANSAS It’s no wonder 25% of the Kansas state medals from the Great American Beer Festival® are from wheat beer categories: the state produces the most wheat in the country, with 10.8 million tons in 2013. ARKANSAS Arkansas has the only public diamond mine in the world. Speaking of diamonds in the rough, the state’s small and independent craft breweries contribute over $210 million to the Natural State’s economy. IOWA Iowa may be the birthplace of Otto Frederick Rohwedder, inventor of the automatic bread slicer (in 1912), but it’s their “liquid bread” that is making amber waves. The state boasts over 40 craft breweries, with more on the way! ILLINOIS Morton, IL is said to be the pumpkin capital of the world, supplying 85% of US packaged pumpkin. So, you have Morton to thank (or blame) for out-of-season pumpkin beers. FLORIDA Move over, orange juice! Florida has a new beverage boom, growing from 45 to over 100 craft breweries in three short years. The state of Maine ranked 5th in the US for breweries per capita in 2013, with nearly five breweries per 100,000 adult residents. MAINE = 5,000 people The Atlantic Blue Crab is the official state crustacean of Maryland. Additionally, it is friggin’ delicious. Best complementary pairing? A craft beer courtesy of one of the state’s 40+ craft breweries. MARYLAND Many say the unintended landing place for the Pilgrims was Plymouth Rock because the crew of the Mayflower was low on beer and needed to jettison passengers. If that happened today, they could just dock and visit any of the state’s 75+ craft breweries. MASSACHUSETTS 1620 Known for its 10,000 lakes, Minnesota is also gaining a reputation for beer, with nearly 100 craft breweries in the state. MINNESOTA NEW MEXICO Despite being home to the famed Hatch green chiles, the 54 combined medals for New Mexico breweries at the Great American Beer Festival® only have two medals for chile beers. NEW JERSEY Atlantic City’s streets are used on the Monopoly game board, but none of them show you the way to one of the Garden State’s 32 craft breweries. NEVADA The maximum water pressure at the base of the Hoover Dam is 315,000 gallons per second. At that rate, the dam would discharge the entire Nevada craft beer industry’s annual barrelage (46, 729 bbls) in about five seconds. NEW HAMPSHIRE Raise a glass of Granite State craft beer to the state where the first potato in North America was planted. The name Michigan is based on the Chippewa word “meicigama” meaning “great water,” referring to the Great Lakes. You need plenty of great water for great beer, which is why Michigan calls itself the Great Beer State. Isn’t that great? MICHIGAN NORTH CAROLINA How about “First in (Beer Sample) Flights?” North Carolina boasts over 100 craft breweries. UTAH Due to longstanding restrictions in Utah, low strength draught beer is served at bars while full strength beers can be purchased at restaurants in bottles. “Beer”-hive State? Not quite, but getting there. Known as the Show Me State, Missouri is showing the coun- try how much it loves its beer with 49 craft breweries and more in planning. OREGON The ‘Beer’-ver State sits atop the craft beer universe with the most craft breweries per capita. The 230+ craft breweries in Oregon also contribute to the most economic impact per capita. TEXAS Austin is considered the live music capital of the world. With over 100 music venues, there’s nothing like grabbing a craft beer produced by one of Texas’ 100+ craft breweries and enjoying a show. VIRGINIA Virginia is for Beer Lovers, with over 150 operating and planned craft breweries. SOUTH CAROLINA South Carolina is the second largest grower of peaches in the nation. Peaches can be added to beer, or the stone fruit aroma can be perceived from certain varieties of hops, like Galaxy™. SOUTH DAKOTA Mt. Rushmore was created for $1 million. If the dollar held the same value today, the economic impact of South Dakota craft breweries would be able to create 74 Mt. Rushmore monuments. WISCONSIN
